Pro tip, get the 72 hour Tokyo subway pass while in Tokyo. It covers Tokyo metro and Toei subway lines, for a full 72 hours and if you get a regular Pasmo, you can charge that 72 hour ticket to the Pasmo, making it super convenient. Total cost is only ¥1500 (at the time of writing less than 12$) and you will get your money's worth pretty much every time, since Tokyo metro can pretty much get you anywhere in Tokyo (avoid JR lines). This one in conjunction with the hokuriku arch pass is great as well.

Another great vid. Thanks! In March I will travel from Shinagawa Station to Kyoto, and return 10 days later from Kyoto to Shin Yokohama. I do not intend on using any trains except for the two aforementioned shinkansen legs between the Kanto and Kansai regions. It appears that none of these passes will save me money, so I will just buy two separate JR Central tickets (on Nozomi) at a vending machine or JR Ticket Office.

Hi we are planning to go to Japan in November this year. Our plan is to visit tokyo, kyoto and osaka. Will the Hokuriku arch pass cover our trip? And will the pass also cover the internal train usage in tokyo? Hope you can help. Thanks alot 😊

Hi there! the Hokuriku arch pass does cover Tokyo Kyoto and Osaka, it just takes a longer route from Tokyo to Osaka/Kyoto. if you don't mind that, the pass is a very good option. it also covers the trains in Tokyo/Osaka too, as long as they are JR trains, e.g you can use it on the Yamanote line in Tokyo. (because there're many different train/subway operators in Japan, e.g. you won't be able to use it on subways). hope this helps..

I'm travelling with kids who don't have a mobile phone. Can I have several tickets in one mobile? 3. I have an Android smartphone (no Apple). Are there any issues when using this ticket with Android? As no Japanese company replies emails, it's impossible to find out asking them directly. Planning this trip is getting more and more frustrating. Thank you in advance.

Thank you so much!🙏 it really depends on where you want to visit. if you have a brief idea of where to go on day 1,2,... then you can use google maps to calculate the cost. it's easier to pay off if you plan more inter-city trips during the valid time of the pass.

@@ONEGOODDREAM - Hi, I’m flying into Narita on 3/22 @ 1:30 p.m., my first time in Japan. So, my question is, if I bought the Hokuriku Arch Pass and start using it at 2:00 p.m., would that be the starting time of the pass or 00:01 time of 3/22? Also, can this pass be used on the N’EX train from Tokyo to Narita? I’m flying back to California on 3/31, so I’m planning to get this pass on 3/25 and start using it on my way Kyoto, then to Osaka and then back to Tokyo. On the 7th day of this pass is when I leave that’s why I ask if I can use it on the N’EX train to Narita. Suica Card, is this also good in Kyoto and Osaka? Thank you for any advice.

Yea using a rail pass really makes you want to just stay at a city for one day and move onto the next to make the pass worthwhile, especially after the price hike. That's a lot of train travels and not enough getting to know a city. That said, one of the advantage of the JR East and JR West passes is the use of Shinkansen. The other is not worrying about getting individual tickets because with a pass you can just hop on and off, though some trains do require reservation.

@@atsaichu Yes and no. My wife and I were just in Japan for 20 full days and had a 14-day pass that we used to travel from Sapporo > Beppu. The one way train ride would’ve cost $230USD so the price of the 14-day pass was well-worth it. And our trip was not rushed.

These itineraries are really crazy! Nara and Himeji in one day before traveling to Hiroshima? Really? And the Tohoku pass you'd be changing hotels every day! While at the same time, the Hokuriku Arch Pass already has a new price, but rail passes such as the Hankyu Tourist passes (which actually make it feasible to travel between Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe cheaply) are not discussed. I guess this is how the JR Pass people really thought that 100% of all people would use the JR Pass, even though realistically, people will stay 1-2 days at each destination. They did not think about this logically and just said "increase in price is good lol". No more days of choice either which they used to have for regional trains. They just don't want people on their trains unless they pay full price and let people take the JAL air pass or long distance bus pass instead. The only JR pass that can be used is the Hiroshima JR West pass because it does pay off when you plan a short hiroshima trip and back.

Thank you so much for watching!🙏 it seems that you may not need any pass for your itinerary. yeah, I also think that you only need to buy a shinkansen ticket from Tokyo to either Shin-Osaka station (that's the shinkansen station for Osaka) or Kyoto station. Osaka and Kyoto are so close that you can even stay at one place to explore both (if you want to avoid switching hotels). You can buy the shinkansen ticket online, I explain about it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z3nEn4uOittpr5o they have some discounts for early bookings. any maybe get an IC card for convenience.

Hello Yoko, thank you for making this video🙏 I have few questions that need your expert advice for my first trip to Japan coming 4 days. I will arrive in Japan Narita Airport on March 18/2024 From Mar 18-24, we will stay in Tokyo & visit Shibuya - Shinjuku - Ginza (our hotel area) - Akihabara - Ikeburu - Shimokitazawa - Hijiri Bashi bridge etc. From Mar 25-30, we will travel from Tokyo to Osaka first & we will stay in Osaka Dotonbori during this period. Then visit Universal Studio - Kyoto & Nara during this time Mar 26-29. For Kyoto & Nara will be just 1 day trip for each location. Actually we will head back to Narita Airport on Mar 30 going back home.😁 From your experience & very knowledgeable about Japan, should we get the JR Pass Ticket 7 days pass option for use to travel around Osaka - Universal Studio - Kyoto & Nara for Mar 25-30 and go back to the Narita Airport on Mar 30? OR just buy the individual ticket for each trip during the period in Osaka OR any Pass which you would recommend for our first Japan trip? As the JR Pass has increased the price alot since last October, I heard lot of peoples said sometime the JR Pass is not worth compared to buy the individual ticket that would save money! Appreciate your time & your response advice will be great value for our family trip!🙏

Hi there! For your itinerary, here're some of my thoughts FYR.. - get the Tokyo-Osaka shinkansen tickets on SmartEX (official JR reservation app). they have discounts for family and early bookings. check out my step by step video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z3nEn4uOittpr5o the shinkansen station in Osaka is Shin-Osaka station. - after arriving in Osaka, you can consider the KANSAI Mini Pass or the Kintetsu Bus & Train combined Pass for the time you're in Osaka-Kyoto-Nara. JR and Kintetsu are the 2 main train operators in Osaka areas. - Tokyo - NARITA Airport by bus or Narita Express to/from Tokyo Station - taxi to hotel. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y6DCq35um5mLnq8 - get an IC card for each member of your family so that you don't have to stop and buy a ticket by cash each time. IC cards work across the IC card network across Japan so you can use them in Osaka Kyoto too (if you buy a pass, use the pass, don't use the IC cards where the pass is useable). - you can do the airport procedures online now: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rJOygaNmrLqhe6s note that now there's only 1 QR code for both immigration and customs. hope this helps.. have a great trip!^^

@@ONEGOODDREAMHello Yoko, sorry I have another questions about JR Station & the Suica or IC Card. 1). Is the Shin-Osaka station same as Osaka? As I do research on the JR Pass website under JR Fare Calculator and notice these 2 stations. Are both the same one OR be different? 2). Is the Suica still exist OR been replaced as IC Card? As I watch few video which say the Suica card is discontinued - not sure it true or not. 3). Can I use the Suica or IC Card to tap then get on the JR Line Train Or I have to have the actual individual trip JR ticket? Plus can I use the Suica to pay for the JR Ticket (Individual single trip ticket)? Since the JR Pass has increased the price then the Main question for all tourist - would JR Pass worth or not! As I have seen many peoples asking this questions on the JR Pass forum. Many thanks for your time & support!🙏

hi, to your questions, 1) they are different station. after you arrive at Shin-Osaka station by the bullet train, you will need to take a normal train to Osaka station. 2) yes the suica card still exists. but it's harder to get one now since they've suspended the sales of the long term suica cards from Jun 2023. it's a temporary thing, might be on and off. you might be able to get one at a JR travel service center at the airport. or you can get the 28-day welcome suica card for visitors. 3) yes you can use any IC card to tap and get on a JR line, subways, buses, pay taxi, convenience stores... but it does not pay for express trains/bullet trains. I'm having a new video about the IC card this Sat. I think it might answer your question in more details. but for now you can refer to this video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJe4i5SgnbGehtU 4) I discussed about the JR pass after price hike here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nZ64Z6iOhLund5I hope this helps..

I think Kansai Wide Pass 5days 12,000 yen should be on the list.... 😊 Day1 on pass no4 (KANSAI MINI PASS) , from KIX to Osaka can only take kanku rapid cost 1210 yen, NOT haruka 2940 yen. Kansai mini pass not cover Haruka LTD. EXP
