I used to do mash/sparge, so when I switched to BIAB, I just removed the false bottom from my mash tun and use that instead of a kettle. Since it's insulated, it maintains mash temperature perfectly, and I didn't need to concern myself with wort transfer, since it already has a spigot. Given the constraints of my home environment, I think I'm making the best of my situation. I'm enjoying the process, enjoying the beer, and I've done well in some competitions. Two third-place ribbons and two second-place ribbons.

I bought a Digiboil and I'm very happy with it. I brew BIAB with it and while its mash temperature isn't as consistent as one with a pump, it's still a very budget friendly upgrade.

I brew with the digiboild and you can easily recirc with the spout on the bottom, into a pump, into the closed distillers lid on top. EZ with quick connects and no risk of mess.

Trent, Thank you for posting the best homebrew videos on the net! They are always high quality production as well as great content. I would love to see you brew a quick and dirty small batch (say 2 or 2.5 gallon) biab recipe 🍻

I'm really enjoying playing with it, I briefly mentioned it but you'll need a pump too if you dont have one already.

Thank you! I love the simplicity of BIAB and the low investment required. And while I do like the idea of an integrated, electric system, it's very pricey to start. The Hangover and electric heaters at the end of the video seem like a great path forward from here!

Awesome, and I agree, I think its a good idea to slowly build up and maybe some day down the road you can go full electric.

Good tips, I've heard about the hangover many times in the brulosophy ad breaks but this is the first time I've seen and fully understood it. It looks like a great add-on! Pulley is definitely on my longterm list too whenever I'm living somewhere I can install one.

Nice, already doing a few of these, I recently won a beer contest and won a 27 gal and 15 gal kettles, I am now brewing about 15 gal batches and grain gets really heavy so I have a pulley now but still heavy to try to lock it in place myself so I am adding 3 more pulleys to make it easier ;) Cheers

I've been doing BIAB for my test batches (using a brewzilla for my full size batches) and using a sous vide stick is fantastic for at least 5-8L batches. I think it makes a lot of sense for people that either don't brew very often or only brew smaller batches as it can be used for more stuff than just brewing. If you are however brewing larger batches on a regular basis I feel that going for an electric system makes more sense as an upgrade for temp control.

Great video. The Hangover looks interesting in terms of recirculating the mash. The issue I see with it is that you'd have to leave the lid off the kettle in order to use it, which would cause heat retention issues. I guess you could always remove the device after each recirculation.
@TheBruSho Жыл бұрын
Great points! I think its a trade off, you're cracking the lid to let the hangover in but its circulating the wort for you. So I guess if you dont mind the exchange then go for it, but stirring occasionally with a spoon works too.

One thing to note since you made a plug for Brew Bag, when I ordered mine, Brew Bag customer support told me that if I intended to recirculate to go with the 400 micron bag instead of 200.
@TheBruSho2 жыл бұрын
Good to know! Thank you for sharing that
@EtherealPrelude2 жыл бұрын
@@TheBruSho I don't know if it actually even makes any difference, but since they're the manufacturer I wanted to follow their directions.
@SteveBenson2 жыл бұрын
@@EtherealPrelude It makes a massive difference. The 400 is a completely different material than the 200, and allows significant improvement to recirculation.

I'm new to homebrewing, I've done 3 small brews at this point so I'm starting to think about upgrading. I'm also no electrician. I've seen these electric systems and I hear that 240 is the way to go. I would have to get a converter to go that high, but I'm worried about blowing a fuse on my breakers. Should I just stick with 120, or is a converter safe to use?
@TheBruSho2 ай бұрын
@@TheEffectOfMass I wouldn’t trust the converters, feels like an easy way to blow a fuse. I like 120, it’s a little slower but works on normal outlet. But if you have a washing machine/dryer they are usually 240v so you could plug into that. Or hire an electrician to put in a 240 breaker 🤷♂️
@TheEffectOfMass2 ай бұрын
@@TheBruSho Thanks! Yeah, those are my thoughts exactly. I don't particularly want to hire an electrician. I'll take a look at my washer/dryer outlet. But, honestly, 120 probably isn't a bad thing. Thanks for the reply!!

Great video! Something worth noting is that a pulley doesn't actually make anything lighter (in fact, with the tiny bit of resistance it makes it "heavier"), it just feels lighter because you're pulling down instead of lifting up. In order to actually have any mechanical advantage, you would need a "snatch block" at the bag end going back up to the pulley.
@tman93382 жыл бұрын

Great video Trent. One problem I’ve never tackled is yeast harvesting so I can save money on purchasing so much yeast. Are you able to do a video on such a topic?
@jeffreycoburn49792 жыл бұрын
Check Brulosophy method of overbuilding yeast starters so you can always keep a fresh batch of cells on hand without the need of the typical harvesting method after real beer was already fermented. I’ve been successfully saving money and having fun for the last couple months doing that

@TheBruSho2 жыл бұрын
Nice! what size batches do you do in the 15 gal?
@JesterStuttle2 жыл бұрын
@@TheBruSho 5-6 gallons. I just made a 10% IPA. The large kettle and grain basket allows for big beers. I could not have made an imperial IPA with a 10 gallon pot. The 15 gallon gives good headspace and eliminates possibilities of boil overs. I have another two vessel system. 25 and 30 gallon pot for 15 gallon batches. 30 gallon mash while recirculating then transfer to the 25 for boil.
