I appreciate your point about casting. My wife and sister in law recently asked me to teach them to fish. Casting is the first thing I am teaching them, using a spinning reel. For now, just getting their timing correct is most important. No hook, only a small sinker to start with, and in the back yard. Good video Steve. 🍻

Time on the water is number one in my book. Fish as much as possible with as many people as you can.

Hey Steve. I am a bank/public dock fisherman at the moment. I find a lot of new people who start out fish go with live bait and then transition to the world of artificial baits. When that happens, I find they gravitate to the more flashy baits, crankbaits, spinnerbaits things like that, when what they should concentrating on is slower more weedless baits like a Texas worm or some other slow moving bait. Nothing will end a new fisherman career faster than losing expensive baits to the lake. So that's my two cents. Tight lines. Regards, Steven.

Fish for fun, be stealthy, and aware of opportunities, and have a follow-up to your power presentation. Repeated good casts to key pieces of cover. And bait rotation. Find out if the bass wants it falling fast, gliding, spiraling, or kicking, or dangled and dead sticked or are they feeding up and want some top water...Go Steve 💥🎣🤙.

Good list Steve. Except number four. As a lifelong bait junkie I feel personally attacked. LOL. I mean if you don't have a garage and boat full of never opened gear are you even a fisherman. ;) In seriousness I would add one more thing to your list. Expensive equipment is a luxury not a necessity. That 89.00 AbuGarcia Black Maxx from WalMart will catch just as many fish as the Dobyns/Shimano combo you spend 500.00 on. Is it nice to have and does it have some advantages in quality, ease of use, fatigue helps, and feel? Absolutely! But learn how to fish first. Refine your likes and dislikes then buy the more expensive equipment once you determine your actual needs/wants and if you are a fisherman long term. Good video Steve.

I fish mostly farm ponds. Some are just giant bowls and some have been built with points, drop offs and shallow areas. I am also (usually) an afternoon -evening fisherman. Dont have music playing. Listen to your area you are fishing. Fish where you don't want to throw your bait. As in moss, cattails ect. Of course you need to throw appropriate lures for these areas. Weedless being number 1. Watch the edges for minnows, frogs and crawfish. Fish stick around their food source. Look at the water clarity. Do not stand right at the edge of the pond. If the water is clear then the fish can see you! Walking on the edge of the bank will spook frogs and minnows. With the food source out of the area so go the bass. I try to fish all 3 columns of the pond before I move on. ( This could be overkill, but thats just me) Top water, mid column-chatter bait, spinner bait ect. Then bottom- T-rig, jig. As someone above mentioned - time on the water! Go even when you don't think they will be biting. Go in spite of the weather. If you are paying attention and having fun you will learn something every time even if you go home skunked! Practice casting, fish different speeds, straight retrieve, stop and go. Watch nature. Sorry, I rambled on and on.🤷 This was a good subject, Steve👍👍

Hey Steve. Casting ability is a definite. Distance and accuracy is key but bait entry is the overseen component. Learn to make the lure look like an Olympic diver from China. That was always the secret to my catching so many reds in the lagoon. I’m looking at your #3 & #4. I don’t think most have the problem of getting stuck using the same bait. I think most try to throw all of the crap they bought. I recommend new fishermen find a bait that they have some success with and try to develop the use of that bait. Across more scenarios. Better to be really good with one bait than to be average with 4 baits.

I think a huge mistake new anglers make is not varying the speed of retrieve. They get stuck in the same speed they caught a fish on once. They forget or don’t realize how important it can be to slow down or pause the bait.

Yes, learn every technique, have 39 rods 20 baitcasters, and 19 spinning rods. 30 in my boat, that may work on that body of water, I'm fishing. I start out with 10 on the deck. I have talked to so many pro's about, how long before they change rods. That's a closed secret. Just the other day, practicing for a tournament didn't catch a fish for 3hours, tried several spots. Then a new bait and a different color, found fish at the next 3 spots, on the same pattern. Will see if this cold front, will alter things. 90% of lures are to catch fisherman. Spoke to Doug Hannon in the nineties. His advice is to stay with the same rod and reel brand, you will know everything about them, and will better learn how the lures work. If, you can afford tackle purchase the best. A $400 reel works better than a 99, a custom rod built to your height and specs, style. I used titanium guides, long before any brand, start using them. Quality equipment will make your casting, and landing fish, easier, and confidence, ability superior. Custom made baits, Megabass are expensive, some work. Purchased a pop r from a guy in Texas, for $50 in 1995, it always caught fish, a special action. Lost it in 2015.

Bait companies target fishermen not fish. If it looks good people will buy it.
