Great Lessons, I'm copying everything down in my blank tab notebook! My biggest challenge with learning the fretboard, is playing scales (horizontally?) from the low end of the neck, on up higher, ascending the neck... Or from high to low. These might be called "extended scales" or something like that???. Like, for when the root note is on the D string, and I run out of strings to complete one of the patterns, -- is there a formulae for grabbing the notes I need by going up the neck? I know I'm not being clear, -- basically, how do I go up or down the neck, playing over one chord?

One exercise that might be helpful is to learn the scales or arpeggios on one sting going up and down the neck - keep it going past the 12th fret.

@@patrickhorner8270 Yeah, -- I can "half ass" that by ear, but if I were to memorize the way the scale or arpeggio is spelled I would really be getting somewhere. Thanks for the tip!

It’s about analysing position changes which my technique course talks about Mike. Also why don’t you down the pdf rather than noting everything down manually?

@@ebassguitar Thanks, -- I'll check out the Technique Course when I can... I like to write stuff down so I can step away from my laptop, and work on things outside, unplugged, sitting under a tree.

Hi James thanks for the lesson! My biggest frustration with the fretboard is that I struggle to reach the higher frets - my wrist is at an impossibly bent angle, so I avoid them. Also find it difficult stretching my fingers to one fret per finger, so I just slide as I need to - still using the correct fingers.

That might be something to do with strap height or thumb angle on the back of the neck….

I have a Fender Jazz but can’t get the tone you get in your videos. I purchase Labella’s their new so require a breakin of a month. I playing through a fender BXR 100 and the tone sucks in my opinion. Don’t have the pop James has in the videos on you tube. Time for a Markbass or?

Hello James, my single biggest problem with learning the fretboard is that of my memory. I have a history of not being able to recall information very quickly so I tend to rely heavily on the core positions of the Fingerboard. That coupled with my family history of Alzheimer's and severe memory loss has me Really "excited" for my future.

I have tried to download several of these "free" pdf's and they never appear in my email. Do I have to join something or pay a fee? Is anyone else having this issue? I love these videos, but the pdf's would really help.

My biggest challenge is shifting from using single root notes to actually utilizing arpeggios in the progression of a song in order to cover the whole fingerboard and to make the groove more interesting because I'm tired of only using single notes it makes me sound like a kindergarten bassist
