I live in a rural area in the US and the guys I jam with are more into C&W and folk . They say that I only need to know two notes to play country. I don't quite buy that but could you please do a similar lesson on country and folk music?

Sure - I can see where they are coming from! I think it’s useful to thing of it in those simple terms

As a beginner I find this very intriguing but can’t yet fully appreciate the benefits. Will gladly revisit in a few months and in the meanwhile just practice the scale and fingering. I like your teaching style. Already doing a course but I’ll explore more once I’m over that one.

It's weird looking at 5 strings bass w p/j pick up. We in the us used to see them all the time w 4 strings though most 4 string now is humbuckers and soap bars trying to look like humb. All of our 4 tring p/j moddels come with humbuckers in the 5 tring version. Been that way here since the 90s. Example ive play all sorts of Ibanez bass models. All the 4 strng. P/j. 5str Hb. Now p/j s are becoming more rare.

Great vid. Thanks much. I saw a clip of the guy in the SRV band playing this. He fills the riff by repeating the root octave on the ‘and’ of every beat the whole way through! This is how Jerry Lee Lewis worked his left hand on the piano, constantly repeating the root above the bass line with the thumb on his left hand on the piano: ||:one root, three root, five root, six root | dom. seven root, six root, five root, three root:|| etc. With a three piece band, it fills out the sound a lot more.

James, great content as always., thanks you. I was wondering if you could do a video on the bassline of “Peg” (Steely Dan) and could go through some ways of simplifying it (the different levels) like you’ve done with other bass lines. It’s a tough one, been working on it but would love to have some ideas to simplify it until the day, which is a ways away, I can play it note for note.

Love this but what would be the possibility of having all the PDF's sent automatically to my Email? I will start hunting seasons next week and will be out of any data contact pretty much for the whole month. Also maybe some alternative methods on the fretboard ,my arthritic fingers have difficulties at times .

Great idea James and fortunately I have been able to to these for a while. One piece of advice though. When you play the C major scale, some might find it difficult to see which notes you are actually fretting. For example when you play the first C you are using your index finger to fret the C rather than the forefinger which you are holding over, but not fretting the B. Then you use the index finger on the 7th Fret A string to play the E in the scale. I get why you do it because the fingering is more compact but it might be worth mentioning it for clarity for others.
