last observation is to the point. The most therapeutic part of your videos is a passionate speech about why I do not need another boardgame. I backed Last of Us but you saved me so much money with elden ring . In the times of Kickstarter hype we need more such videos

Loved the video, thanks! Would be interested in Western Legends! Have heard of but not played too many sandbox games (if Outer Rim doesn’t count, then I haven’t played any 😂) - sci if is by far my favourite theme but it looks great 🙂 fingers crossed for that video! I also haven’t received any of the board games I have backed yet 😂 my first one should be this month, probably next which is Deep Rock Galactic! Super excited for that!

Outer Rim counts IMO - especially if you think about such games allowing you to embed in the 'universe' but take it in your own direction and make your own stories. On this latter point, Outer Rim succeeds to my mind. I will however mention the game that almost goes hand in hand with Western Legends. Different designers, publishers etc. but Xia: Legends of a drift system and Western Legends are generally the two games mentioned when thinking of sandbox games, and Xia is very much sci-fi. ... and as if to complete the circle, Xia was a KS back in the day, and most likely wouldn't have got made without crowdfunding. It's now also in retail, but remains quite a lot of money (and the Embers expansion recommended)

I haven’t played Outer Rim yet (although a friend has a copy on the way and I’m looking forward to giving it a try) so I couldn’t say with certainty but we’ll say yes 😄 I’ll add your yes to the Western Legends playthrough, it wouldn’t take a lot to get me to play it to be honest, I love it. Ooh I remember the DRG campaign, should be a lot of excited people waiting on it :)

Cthulu DMD may have simple rules, but there is surprising crunchiness to how players order their turns, with opportunities for clever ordering. That said, its clearly got a strong random element to it via the Mythos cards. My grumble with it would be the ludicrous size of the minis that obscure the board. My first game of Western Legends was supremely dull, as we were all playing it seriously, like a dry euro. Luckily I thought it had enough potential to try again, and it shone with a group that enjoyed interaction / banter. One useful thing to reflect on, is whether people could access these games post campaign. If they didn't go to retail, or the retail version is neutered, then that's a strong reason to have backed it. This is often true of smaller companies doing crowdfunding. Conversely some companies / games are always going to hit retail, and so the case for crowdfunding becomes a little weaker.

Absolutely agree on the ordering, it’s another thing I love about it, although turn ordering is super important in a lot of Cthulhu games like Arkham Horror which I love too. There are so many games that can be made or broken based on the type of group you’re playing with. Catan was a horrible experience the first time I played because the group who introduced me to it were highly competitive and were focussed on winning as opposed to teaching the game, the second group I played with were lovely and chill. You’re right on the ‘coming to retail’ side of things, I know there’s equally been games that during their campaign we were told they’d come to retail and we’re all still waiting for that to happen. We can never know and as such just have to make a somewhat informed decision at the time y’know?

@@shouldyoubackit ... that latter point might be a good topic for a video. Learning to spot which are just about dead certs for retail; highly unlikely to make retail; or who knows? It might be best in the context of a wider "Should you back it.... or wait for retail?" topic. Talking through the reasoning for both options. On that subject, it's interesting to see pre-orders popping up for retail of Awaken Realms' big box crowdfunded games ISS Vanguard and Etherfields (ETA March this year). Lots that was in the campaign, though their exclusives (often just 1 per campaign e.g. Thorn Knight) are absent, plus a small few items that are moderately surprising omissions.

I can *not* understand the lack of hype and the lack of love for Assasin's Creed in the boardgaming community. This game is *awesome* ! (though it could do with a lot less mini's) I played it with the wife: she loved it too. So much that we've ordered two expansions. Great, *great* game !

Whilst I've not played either, I do recall reviewers noting that EtDS introduces a small bit of extra complexity into combat via the flanking mechanism. Still looks relatively straightforward, but that's maybe one to focus in on, and work out which iteration of combat system appeals most.
