Every once in a while I realize i need to clear out the pantry, refrigerator &/or freezer of random things. Some of those random meals have been my favorites! Not only do you have to get creative, but it can also get you out of a rut... actually eating the leftovers of one of those meals right now 😋. Well done, Taz. You're becoming a proper cook!

yes we all go to do the brutal non-rotation run down and clear out from time to time. I've got about 3kg of porridge oats to run down, so obviously porridge is on the menu, but I'll be doing some flapjacks and meal for something a bit random like haggis

My tip for opening jars that are difficult is to run the lid under the hot tap. Dry it and then it’ll be so much easier.
@louburnett67829 ай бұрын
Yes hot water on metal lid for 30s or so, dry off and opens easy - due to heat causing metal to expand a little away from jar - physics!!
@missmarypoppins91919 ай бұрын
Also turn the jar upside down on a chopping board and wedge a regular table knife between the lid to break the suction seal.
@xray13699 ай бұрын
Jam the flat end of a small spoon/fork at an acute angle under the lid and then flatten the angle. This way you can easily unseal the vaccum.
@ninkompoop9 ай бұрын
Easy way to make it a lot easier is to hit the sides of the jar lid with the side of a spoon all around several times and it becomes so much easier. :D

for safe sake, keep the knife away from the lids guys 😂😂😂😂
@tirkdiamond8 ай бұрын
For any future tries, if you have a sauce jar that's difficult to open, try turning it upside down and hitting the bottom so the sauce moves towards the top and there's sauce covering the top part of the jar and not air. It makes opening the jar easier.

You did well Taz and I’m impressed how fast you learned and realised what the pit falls are. There is a guy Mike on the Atomic Shrimp channel who has made lots of these videos who has come to many of the same conclusions. How annoying it is to buy for one meal, economy of scale, getting lucky with offers, not being able to buy one onion, having to adapt to any opportunity you find rather than going in with a plan etc. so be proud how much you picked up on from your short experiment. I’d recommend checking out some of his videos too as he made some amazing things out of seemingly thin air and there is useful cooking information in there.

When you can’t open a jar, stab the middle of the lid with a knife. It has a slight rise in the lid, stab there and it will release the lid and you can easily open. Honestly works! I do it all the time and never struggle anymore xx
@heathermacdonald10299 ай бұрын
Only if you plan on using the whole jar, if you will only be using a bit, use a blunt instrument (I use the handle of a knife) and dent it a few times, works the same but keeps the lid air tight.

I would love to see you try a basic cooking challenge and what I mean by that is to try making homemade white sauce etc. It’s actually a lot easier then you think as you only need plain flour, milk, butter and a little salt, although I use a little chicken stock powder instead of salt but you do what works for you. Once you’ve learnt how to make that you’ll be able to make a lot with that basic knowledge. I really enjoy watching you do these challenges, you always surprise me 😀

tip for opening jars -- run the top under very hot water. hot water "expands" the material, making it easier to open. works like a charm for me every time. or you can get silicone pads to get a good grip and open jars easily. similar concept, you can get a thick rubber band and put it around the lid to give yourself extra grip to open it

Great video idea. With the pie you could of used a tin of mushroom soup for the sauce. It might of been cheaper. But you did brilliantly. Would like to see more of these.
@hannahk13069 ай бұрын
You did a good job with these. For a cheap cheat's sauce for the pie filling, use a tin of cream of chicken or mushroom soup. Chickpeas, beans and lentils all work well as cheap proteins (you can also use them to make meat go further, e.g. chicken and chickpea curry or add kidneys or lentils to a bolognese sauce).

@marycontraire38969 ай бұрын
Taz, the white lasagna sauce was actually very clever. Typically the white sauce in lasagna is a bechamel, which is basically a roux (fat plus flour cooked together) with milk added, though presumably the jar had some stabilizer/preservative added. The sauce in a chicken pot pie is usually roux-based, too, though typically the liquid is chicken stock, not milk. Either way, very similar end result, so your shortcut wasn't 'crazy' at all.
