Saab never lost their way. That was the reason. GM pulled the plug. While they did have to use the GM platforms they did NOT make any rebadges (They had nothing to do with the 9-2x and 9-7x). Saab stuck to their shit until the very end
@sutherlandA15 жыл бұрын
True, not like Saab never previously used parts or collaborated with other makes before GM. Using the Ford V4 in the 96, an initially triumph designed and built slant 4 in the 99 and of course the 9000 was co-developed with fiat, the problem was that GM infiltrated and messed with Saab and ruined them in the process

Definitely Mercedes. And yes, I'm saying that as a German. Some time ago, they built the toughest cars on earth (for example my favorite, the W124 E-Class). Now they've got a lineup of cars which all look exactly the same (and ugly, imo), they are copying cars from BMW (like the GLE Coupe) and Rebadging Renaults and Nissans. They are making some of the least practical cars ever (like that dreadful GLA and CLA). Also, their new models are just way too overstyled, with fake exhaust covers etc. Gone are the times of simple, classy lines as on the older models. Also, one other thing that's really annoying me: Mercedes was never cheap - but nowadays, they've become exactly like Apple: You pay a sht load of money just for the logo, for the lifestyle. Even if it's actually just a Renault Kangoo you're driving around in, with a Pizza-sized star slapped onto the front.

I still have yet to find a proper answer as to why the Japanese automakers have generally stopped making the kind of inexpensive fun-to-drive performance and sports cars they were well known for making in the 80s and 90s (and early 00s in some cases)...
@jamiecinder94124 жыл бұрын
I think it's connected to the disappearance of 2 door cars, in general. Sports coupes used to be something that "ordinary" people used to buy a lot, but then when SUV's got really popular, 2 door cars started dying off left and right. There was even a period where Chevy decided to stop building the Camaro, only reversing their decision a few years later due to overwhelming demand for the car.

Sure the power hasn't changed much but if power is what you're looking for that's why they make the bigger bikes like the zx14 and h2 now. Nathaniel Bennett You would assume correctly. It's all about "safety" nowadays. Instead of teaching people proper road manners, cars are being designed to cope with aggressive driving and dangerous situations. None of this would be necessary if everyone obeyed the rules and respected each other.

@Dolby1097 жыл бұрын
Yes they have, at least in America. Until this year the only sports car they had was a FWD variant on a regular compact car, and even then it only had 205hp, basically matching the lowest tier of performance from other brands. Ford has two of the same, plus a standalone performance car the Mustang, and a supercar the GT. Now Honda is moving in the right direction, but still the type R is the only affordable sports car and is again FWD based on the civic. The NSX is fast, but frankly overpriced and over complicated.

If you mention Honda you also have to mention Toyota (excluding their Lexus division). However, sports cars don't make these companies money. Honda made well handling cars with incredible engines like the F20C, K20, B-series, and J-Series (still in production) to build their reputation. In the end, both Toyota and Honda make SUV's and family haulers because that's were the money is. Personally, Mercedes Benz and BMW have are far too unreliable. BMW makes great engines but installs BS into their products like plastic VANOS systems that are a reliability nightmare. Nissan would be a lot stronger if they did just one thing: got rid of their CVT transmissions. Mazda hasn't really strayed. They have the engines and platforms to produce some really great cars. Recently, they released a turboed version of the Mazda-6. Hell, their engines with 14:1 compression ratios is something that I would of expected from Honda. Ferrari, I feel isn't the company it used to be. Porsche, Lamborghini, and McLaren have stole a lot of their lime light. They're not really sitting the standard benchmarks anymore.

Ford has been really reaching out to the enthusiast market, with the off-road capable Raptor, the sheer fun of the Focus RS, the Mustang and it's Shelby variants drive fantastically if you aren't some 18 year old who got one as a birthday present, and the new GT. Honestly, I woudl replace Mazda and Honda with brands such as Citroën and Maserati. Citroën used to do world class cars (Traction Avant, the mind-blowingly good DS for instance) and after the SM, it went rather downhill. Nowadays, they even sold their patents for the hydropneumatic suspension system which was pretty much their best quirk (I have a friend who owns an old CX and he actually accelerates when a speed bump comes, because it oddly works better at higher speeds. You feel absolutely nothing as the whole car stays perfectly levelled, only the wheels move). Nowadays, they try to sell overdesigned cars or boring ones with the same shitty engines that you can find in a modern Peugeot and shitty finishing like dreadful and squeeky plastics. That brand was always quircky, with some interesting design choices, but it did work very well as long as quality was there. Now, it feels just bland and pretentious. Maserati fares even worse in my opinion. Those cars always had some ridiculousness in them. Early Ghiblis were fancy deathtraps with the good old Italian madness you could find in transalpine cars of this era. It means they were a total hoot and are still pretty much legendary cars. This incredibly, has grim consequences. Nowadays, they are pretty much a scam. You will find the same kind of finishing as a Chrysler in your Quattroporte for the price tag of a luxury car. To justify that price, they will put their Trident about everywhere to exploit the most their brand image, even if the end product is really lackluster. As a brand, Maserati is something about prestige, and a little bit of craziness. Under no circumstances they should sell Chrysler parts within a $100,000 price tag. Want a sports sedan? Buy an Alfa Giulia Quadrifoglio instead. It costs less, has a better motor and actually better finishing. And it's every bit as good looking, if not more. If a "5 car brands that got better" video ever comes, I would expect Alfa Romeo to be there since they significantly upped their game with the current generation. And they also have the sports credentials and history to boot with.
@FerrowTheFox7 жыл бұрын
The problem is caused part by stupid customers and part by regulation. Manufacturers used to have a broad lineup: Small economy cars, mid-sized 4 doors, sporty coupes, luxury limos and a off-road / SUVs. But today, all the idiot soccer-moms buying only SUVs and crossovers and everyone else wanting "moar luxury and space" pushed the manufacturers towards making only bigger, luxury filled cars / crossovers and dropping lightweight enthusiast cars. Also, regulations force manufacturers to add a shitton of safety features and crumple zones to the designs making them heavy and big as well. Now add some "engine downsizing" for fuel economy and you have heavy cars without power! Over the past few years, how many former small cars have turned into huge piles of metal (Honda Civic, VW Golf, Ford Focus) and how many new small cars have popped up only to be "crossovered" up in size (Fiat 500 L, Mini Countryman)? For me THIS is the problem. If every linup had a coupe or hot hatch, instead of 5 crossovers and maybe they would shave off weight for fuel economy instead of reducting power, the automotive world would still not be as great as in the 80s and 90s, but there would at least be a good variety for us car guys.

Another remarkable downgrade: Citroën. The 1995-ish Xantia Activa is a reigning champion of the elk swerve test, it has just about the highest cornering stability of any vehicle ever. But the smart hydraulic suspension that first made its rounds in the legendary Citroën DS and that made this possible was dialled back down over the years and finally discontinued entirely in Citroën vehicles. But PSA's loss is in part Ford Cologne's gain. You can recognise some of the dynamics of the Peugeot vehicles of old in the more recent small Ford models. Also: Lancia, remember when they made vehicles that were any good?

So bad is Citroen that they are the most successful brand in rally and won 9 straight titles with Sebastian Loeb. The Citroen DS was one of the most innovative designs ever. Siana Gearz Omg I'm so happy to have found your comment so far up. I'm driving a Xantia Activa V6 and the pure amount of fun I've had with it is just indescribable. Soooo many modern Audis, BMWs, Japanese sportscars and even Porsches went from jostling in my backmirror to tiny little toys after a corner or two. Unbelievable stability that even saved my life once, I think (dodging cars on the autobahn while going 200, every other car I drove wouldn't even come close to reacting like that) Though, I have the privilege of having my dad, who maintains Citroëns, especially Activa, for a living. Otherwise this car would be too expensive for me. There's a LOT of unique technology in this car. Other cars seem like lifeless Bobby cars to me. The most fun part - and also saddest part at the same time is, no one nowadays expects this from a Citroën. People have no interest in good cars/technology anymore. They just want the cool modern design and inductive phone chargers, it seems.

The JDMs literally downgraded from the 2000s tbh. Ask anyone about the golden era and the answer will be the 1990s when it comes to racing, drifting and rallying. And even though I love subarus I mourn for the death of the EVO. :'(

Yes, you buy nowadays Mitsubishi or Honda - plain and simple 4 Cylinder, no Turbo, no 4WD, no Automatic, and problem wise you completely forget that you have a car, because they are the most reliable cars ever made. Changing oil every 7.000 km and running scheduled mainentances gives you continous run for 500.000 and more Km on the hour without any problems. Not like shitty "fun" cars to drive, which for every 3 hours on the road, require 3 hours in the service. When you have a job which requires thousands of kilometers per month, nothing even comes close to Mitsubishi and Honda in the reliability territory.

As an owner of the car I'm pretty disappointed you didn't even mention the Honda Prelude when talking about Honda's peroformance cars, especially as the Prelude started all this Type R crap with the 4th gen and revolutionized performance steering with the 5th gens ATTS. If you don't know what a Prelude is look it up on googlr, it's a fun car that shares parts with the accord and civic and in the 5th gen models had the H22 and H23 engines

Honda Marketing decided they wanted to save money, so they changed the name of the Prelude to the Accord Coupe and hoped no one would notice. Honda marketing has done some seriously retarded things. They should have axed the Accord Coupe and kept the Prelude. They should have revived the Integra/CRX instead of given us a CR-Z hybrid (wtf IS this shit, who thought this was a good idea?). Should have kept the S2000. Brought over the Civic Type R earlier and not bothered screwing around with the Si. Insight -> Civic Hybrid -> Insight again - > gave up -> Insight III (this time, it looks like... an Accord?!). Can we just have an AWD Civic Type R? Or make something that's RWD for fun (or just bring us back the S2000 as a coupe). Toyota gave us the MR-S and GT86 (FR-S), so why not...

@Splitmatter7 жыл бұрын
You're judging the GTi version based on having a low tier model (and diesel)? That's kind of non-sensical. A 208 base model is a whole different thing to the 208 GTi by Peugeot Sport on paper alone. One has 115 HP (I4 1.6 Petrol Engine version), the other one has around 200HP. One has a Limited Slip Differential, the other one doesn't. One does 0-100 in around 6.5 seconds and the other one does not. One has stiffer suspension, the other one does not. It's like comparing the baseline Ford Focus to the Ford Focus RS. They're two completely different beasts (and not because I drove any of those cars, but because you just look at the specs and its one huge dead giveaway). They all do have electronic assisted steering, which I don't like really. I prefer Hydraulic Assisted Steering, and I do agree on current cars being too "soul-less".

Soon to be added to the list, Vauxhall/Opel now that PSA (Peugeot and Citreons owners) have acquired the brand from GM. Vauxhall had really been getting back into its grove with the Astra K (which I own in the 1.6T 200ps model which is a true sleeper of a car) and Insignia B model with some really great Ecotec engines and solidly put together cars. However, given we've not seen a GSi or VXR version of the Astra (give it's 3 years into its production run now) and PSA are moving to standardise the range to use PSA part (like on the new Corsa), Vauxhall will just end up being re-badged Peugeot with worse engine plants, crappy electrics and just bad build quality.

You missed one...Hummer,But before you throw rotten tomatoes at me Hear me out,Hummer originally was a military brand producing Humvees which had Central tire deflation system from a button inside the vehicle, the transmission was higher which meant more ground clearance but less interior space,Most humvees had a Duramax Diesel, but hummer made a civilian Hummer known as the H2 which was a hummer in style (sorta) but not in capability it was full of cheap GM plastic and was too big in width to be able to park easily thus creating problems one of which was Price it was way too expensive (47k-50k) for a Overpriced unreliable block of plastic
@Dr.Westside6 жыл бұрын
H1 alpha was manufactured as a civilian version which did not stray from the AM general HMMWV roots . Hummer was never a brand . AM general made the HMMWV . GM subsequently bought the rights in 1999 to market the Humvee . AM general also made the H2 and the H3 on the GM 2500 truck platform . None of them came with a Duramax . They came with either a 6.0 v8 or 6.2 V8 . en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hummer_H2 The AM general HMMWV came with a Detroit not a Duramax . The Duramax became available in the AM General H1 Alpha in 2006 . The military version never used a Duramax . General engine products still makes a version of that same Detroit used in the HMMWV today . Know your shit before you talk dumbass . en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detroit_Diesel_V8_engine

It was a disappointment for me at first since it's slow and generally underperformed. Later though, I realized that Mirage is suitable for city environment, with traffic jam everyday everywhere, I'm currently glad to choose this car. The engine is slow but reliable and efficient. I even got 30km/litre efficiency one day. Holy shit! I think Mirage is the most fuel efficient car I've ever seen. It saves me a lot of money for gas.

I'm going to have to disagree (shocking I know, but that's the internet for you). I drive a fair amount of rentals for work and since Hyundai's are popular with a lot of rent-a-car companies. I inevitably have to end up driving them from time to time. I personally don't see the increase in quality. The seats are still terrible (for a 6'2" American with a fat butt anyway), the interiors cheap and uninspired and styling is still a 'meh'. Performance wise they are still a bit behind others in their class. (Looking specifically at the Santa Fe and Sonata). However, I will agree that they do hit a good price point. You get what you pay for and that's why Hyundai runs a lot cheaper than other makes in their class. I don't think they're skyrocketing, more like just plateauing.

It's consumer that make these brands become worst. More and more consumers demand for SUV and crossover even though they never really need it. More and more consumer wants their vehicle to be taller and bigger than others so they would feel safe inside. We are the few that left true to the origin spirit of these brands are left to rot in time. Money takes over everything, even principle, pride and passion.
