I think a Police organised car meets would be fantastic. A place where people can bring their cars to have them checked for modifications and not receive a fine but advice on how to make their vehicles road legal. So many people are avoid the police, but creating a situation where they can’t be affected but helped would motivate a lot of people to comply with road safety opposed to getting around it.

The best improvements to road safety in the UK should be a focus on standards, not just speed, some of the poorest driving I've seen is well below any speed limit therefore rendering cameras useless. Lane discipline, considerate driving all need improving 👍

One thing as a heavy motorway user would be bring back the hard shoulder. Smart motorways just don't work and the likelihood off having accidents is increased also having no hard shoulder means it takes emergency service vehicles twice as long to attend a accident or a break down etc.

Not so bad at this time of year where the brighter days give you a chance to slow or avoid the road holes but at night and in the winter there is no warning. @@0QualityOverQuantity You're right. I had heard that in my area anyway they (local council) were considering the removal of some if not all speed bumps but right now I don't see any change. I agree about the chicanes ability to slow vehicles down in comparison to idiotic bumps. Don't know about where you are but in quite a few places in and around Greater Manchester there are a good many bumps that are so stupidly high ,it can't help but increase the amount of wear on suspension components if you don't happen to go over them right ...or even if you do... and like every driver would know your fuel consumption would obviously be higher because of those things the higher they are ,your speed has to be that slow ,,,especially if you happen to have "lowering springs or coilover suspension" ( which is your choice if you want that I know ). Surely in 2022 there has to be some better solutions/ alternatives to slow down traffic by now. They always struck me as a crude ,archaic method to have been thought up. Probably so cheap to put down years and years ago,but now I get the impression they became so dramatically increased in their numbers around the country in towns and cities that it would probably cost a relative fortune to delete from off the road surfaces otherwise they'd long disappeared but who knows

New to being in the U.K. and I have to say something that would help improve road safety is road maintenance. The condition of some of the British B roads can be lethal. I enjoy a drive on them, but when they aren’t maintained properly and have big potholes and bump it can cause serious trouble. I see this has been mentioned several times from just a quick glance at the comments.

Even things like hedge/ tree cutting to ensure good visibility into junctions and driveways. There are some roads that people will blast down with blind junctions. I actually avoid having to pull out of them myself and will plan routes around them because there is no safe way to emerge at all.

Poor road condition really grinds my gears, because we pay so much in tax to drive our cars, so we REALLY deserve better. We have high fuel prices too, and now councils are talking about more tolls on urban roads. It is a money making racket, but we as motorists, see very little, if any benefit from it. Having a partner from Germany has given me a different perspective of UK driving. Our practical training doesn't really follow any teaching templates, but rather are aimed at just passing the test. We should have the practical training follow Germany's example with set modules needed to be completed prior to going for the test. 8 hours of driving in wet / adverse conditions 8 hours of driving at night 8 hours of driving on motorways 8 hours of city driving 8 hours of rural driving This would improve everyone's driving at a base level, ensuring that everyone has 40 hours of driving practice prior to taking their test.

Great advice on the video for some very common mods! My idea is to raise awareness of motorcyclists to road users. It’s very easy for car drivers to miss motorcyclists and I myself have nearly ( thankfully only nearly) been knocked off by a car driver not looking correctly. Something very simple I do with my daughter when in the car is play a game of spot the motorbike. 10 points if you spot it first, but the good thing besides raising her awareness for bikes as a future road user, is she wants to play the game in other peoples cars too, raising their awareness to look for motorcycles. If it prevents even 1 death, then it’s well worth it, and it’s easy and free!

Make it mandatory to pass a motorcycle test and ride for 3 years before being allowed to take a car test. Riding a motorcycle massively increases your awareness of the road around you and that awareness carries over into your driving. Also, staged power outputs for new drivers similar to how motorcyclists have to comply with.

This is specific to Northern Ireland where for the first year a driver has to display an R plate and are limited to a max 45mph on the motorway. My opinion is it causes more near misses than it prevents

At 45mph on the motorway you're a moving hazard equivalent to someone doing 105mph when everyone else is doing 75mph.

It's dangerous doing 45MPH, because it means you'd have to stay in the left lane. Let's say there's an accident and so you'd move over to the middle or the right lane. Not only would you cause traffic congestion, this would also be dangerous for cars having to break at 70 to 80 MPH.

As a new driver I have quickly learned so much that I never would of learned till after I had driven for some time! I would love to see courses / post pass courses that teach new drivers about building the experienced driver sense with predicting driver movement and also possibly teach drivers on how to handle situations if they loose control on wet road which happened to me on a bendy wet road !

Refreshing to see a policeman being informative in a normal manner. Good vid. What about the reduction in light on modern bulbs/lenses as many main beams seem to be excessive in their ability to blind, especially country lanes when following vehicles can blind you for miles and from the opposite direction, or maybe a modern bulb which incorporates a 3rd switch setting which is less than the current main beam. Or an automatic sensor which dims the headlight to a pre-determined brightness so as not to blind when in the vicinity of another vehicle.

Regardless to having a modified car always stick to the speed limits and don’t be competitive with your speed even if your mate is trying to drive faster. Keep the tint of your windows, I know it looks nice but you can do other things to make your car look nice, by not having tinted windows it will make things more clearer at night. Great informational video! Keep up the great content :) Mine would be harsher punishment for driving whilst using a device. You see too many people driving using their phones. If you are on your phone whilst driving you are not paying full care and attention to the road and this is when serious incidents can occur. If obligatory disqualification from driving was brought in as the punishment for driving whilst using a phone then the rate of people doing it would drop over night. If people knew they could lose there licence instantly just by touching their device then they would think twice before doing so.

@@CB-gg1sg Actually I just looked it up properly, it's not a driving test as such but at 70 you need to have your licence re-issued every 3 years and they ask medical questions about health and sight etc, if you lie it's illegal and if they consider it necessary the DVLA can have you tested etc to see if you're fit to drive

I think giving heavy goods vehicles more priority on the roads would make it safer as there’s so many blind spots from inside the cab by people letting them by and getting out there way they wouldn’t be able to cause damage or injury as there isn’t anything for them to damage or injure

Actually the statistics show that Bus and HGV drivers generally cause less accidents and fatalities than car drivers so I would support periodic training for all licence holders along similar line as the Driver CPC that truck and bus drivers have to complete.

The best form of lighting is vertically downwards (eg streetlights) and the worst form of lighting is aimed horizontally towards you (eg oncoming headlights).

I went on one because I was caught doing 26mph in a 20 zone (I thought it was a 30 zone). Waste of time. I knew more than the instructor. In fact I was threatened with being kicked out because I corrected him a couple of times. Eg he said that at 20 mph it takes 2 minutes to go a mile. I kept my mouth shut after that.

Road repairs shold be regulated and there should be a standard to conform to. Brighton council have this habit of filling in potholes with something that really doesn't last or even do a proper repair job. Then they just have to come back and do it again, wasting more money

I have questions for 4:46. Are 3D letters legal and does the plate need to be reflective. I sometimes see modded cars on the road that have 3D letters and very Matt looking plates.

Reflective have been a legal requirement for vehicles first registered for at the least 40 years. Plates must also display the correct BS number confirming they have the required reflectiveness. Don’t know about 3D numbers but they must be the correct font & correctly spaced. The name & post code of the supplier must be on the plates.

My idea would be to introduce an online compulsary test every 5 years to make people aware of law changes, highways changes etc so that people, and law enforcement, are aware of what's right and wrong. For example, not everyone knows about the new "give way to pedestrians/cyclists" that was introduced recently. This video highlights the need for some sort of mainstream awareness.

There one BIG idea to make UK roads safer, use the correct lane. A three lane motorway has one driving land and two overtaking lanes, NOT a slow lane a faster lane and a fast lane. When you have overtaken a vehicle, move to the left ( Driving ) lane again. Frustration causes accidents.

It would be great if the advanced driving test was subsidised/encouraged further. When I passed which is over 16 years ago now 😊 I found this invaluable as it gave me extra knowledge which I still use today and has helped avoid road incidents but it is very expensive for what is already an expensive world with Insurance and running costs. Even if local police forces could run something, I would have certainly taken note if someone like Owen had provided his insight. Second thought is that for those that do speed or are caught using Alcohol/drugs that they get the right mental health support afterwards (ideally before), people don’t intend to create any harm by driving when waking up in the morning unless they are struggling with something else in the background.

It's already bad enough with the massive fine and points. I almost got caught out because in-between me renewing my road tax and insurance and them taking the payment my old bank card which I payed with went out of date and I had a new card, so when they tried to take the money it bounced. It was a month after it had expired that I got a letter from both on the same day saying they hadn't been able to take a payment and that I had been untaxed for a month, and the grace period of my insurance had run out a few days prior. I immediately payed for both, then a few hours later was stopped by the police because their system hadn't been updated yet, if the letters had come a day later I would have been done for no tax or insurance. So I'd personally say in extenuating circumstances you shouldn't be fined or get the points.

I don't know the best way to do this but we really do need an effective way of informing all road users of changes in the law. At the moment I think only a very low percentage of drives ever know what the driving laws are at any one time ... May be GPS or location trigger information like traffic alerts about changes could work ??

One thing myself and my dad agree on, is having to redo your test after a certain age e.g 60+ years old. I am always cautious with young drivers around but i have to be way more cautious with older drivers after a lot of bads experiences with them. Yes this will be annoying but if it means that everyone on the road is being safe, its definitely worth it.

@@michaelgurd7477 Indeed. I gave up cycling when I was obliged/expected to use cycle lanes. They also encourage drivers to ignore cyclists. Eg at night see a red cycle rear light ahead - just ignore it and don't change course because they must be in a cycle lane (or on the pavement).

My ideas that can help with road safety are: Incorporate a more mixed approach tk driving test, Make sure the learner has been tested on rural, Urban roads, motorways and country roads, might mean tests are longer but will be better as if fully test a driver. Also first aid should be a mandatory requirement for driving tests as in the event of an accident it could save a life, and i think we can all agree that nothing bad will come if the majority of people know first aid. Also This again my opinion but i think every 15 or 20 years you should have to retake the driving test because there are alot of older people who would over time forget or get into bad habits. Sorry for going on so long but a final idea would be to have cyclists have to pass a test to be able yo cycle in the cycle lane and on main roads, It would better equip them for the roads and potentially reduce accidents? Testing the driving standard and vision acuity in older drivers would be beneficial to everyone. I see too many drivers in my rural area who can’t reverse safely, can’t park straight, wander in their lane and drive so slowly that it frustrates the cars behind into attempting to overtake. Withdrawing the driving licence from those who fail to meet basic driving competence and handling standards will undoubtedly be upsetting for the driver, and I have been there with my own Mother, but I think that it is extremely important for their safety and the safety of other road users and pedestrians.

Mine would be make sure road surfaces are kept up to date just like cars have to be by being MOT’d. As a lorry driver there are so many points of roads with potholes, chunks missing or road surfaces dipped due to inadequate repairs.

My idea to improve road safety: all modern cars fitted with day light running lights, when the front lights are on, the rear lights are automatically on too. I have lost count of the number of cars I see on a dark morning that have front lights on but no rear lights. It's dangerous and I am surprised it can happen. Volvos have had day light running lights on them for decades as it's Swedish law, but their rear lights are always on too.

Seems very reasonable. In Portugal we basically can't have any part fitted to the car that isn't a factory option (and even some factory options we can't) without having to get the car through some sort of test or inspection for which we have to pay for. Plus, you have to do it everytime you change something because that involves having the government alter the registration papers to include the "mods". No bigger wheels (even if they are from the same car but higher trim level), not even the mildest of window tints.

Idea - Have speed cameras collect positive data on people driving at the correct speeds rather than fining those that don't, maybe only fine them if they breach a certain number of failures or an extreme failure. The data could be linked via a profile to insurance companies which could use "flexible premiums" on a monthly basis. Reward based insentive.

To benefit road users: limit headlights by optical output power (lumens/ candela). The new headlights are so bright they are blinding for oncoming traffic. Alternatively, develop a system of polarising filters for windscreen and headlights so they are offset crossed polarisation... your own lights can be any Brightness but oncoming would be reduced by an amount dependent on the angle of crossed filter. The main issue with this approach is that you'd need to be able to retrofit on existing vehicles (new ones can have this designed in).
