i had that happen to me with my ex. he projected his version of the perfect girl onto me, and tried to make me fit into it by manipulating me into cutting my hair, shaving etc, constantly referring to me as a black girl even though I'm not black (I'm from South Asia, he's Eastern European). to some extent, i think I did it back to him as well. I ignored all of those red flags because, well, we were both young and dumb and it was both our first relationship, I didn't want to believe he wasn't right for me. so I just projected onto him what he COULD be if he improved, instead of who he actually was, which frankly was quite a piece of shit lol. love is blind and all that. the illusion shattered pretty soon after we broke up and any romantic feelings I had for him disappeared quite quickly but I'm still working through some resentment.
