She didn't like that their statements could make her look bad so she punished them for it. Miranda Priestly from Devil Wears Prada was based on Anna Wintour. I hope you're kidding. A content creator has done the math and the price of a ticket started out being $50. Extrapolating that price to today should equate to ~$850, yet the price is $75,000. You're a fool if you think the Costume Institute is in dyer need of funds.
@lilina_who5 ай бұрын
@@merrytunes8697 Ok, let's start: 1) Name that content creator. I'd love to have a look at their video / article. 2) Do you know how preservation of fabric is done? Are you aware of the huge costs to climate control the storage and display cases for the clothes? They have more than 33,000 individual pieces of clothing to protect from decay. (And if you know how deterioration of fabric worked, you'd know the importance of the costs needed to do so.) An kilowatt-hour in NYC is about 22 cents. Sounds small but then you remember there are 33,000 pieces of clothing and accessories to store, not all under the same conditions and not all in the same container. I don't know the cubic meters of the storage units so I cannot do the math, but I know my wardrobe holds only about 300 pieces of clothing (socks and underwear included) if I pack everything very, very tight and folded beyond recognition of patterns on the t-shirts and dresses (which is the complete opposite of perfect fabric preservation). 3) We'll skip the fact that you should pay your staff decent wages as that should be the norm (especially when you're located in Manhattan). An employee at the MET makes an average 55,000 USD per year. Do the math from you ticket price and then check how much is left from that money for the operating costs. They have 23 named people on the website but behind every named one there are about double the amount of unnamed ones who keep the place running (talking about personal experience from my internship at an art museum in Europe). So let's take that number, roughly 70 people work there. So about 10% of this year's ticket sales go directly to employee salaries (probably a bit more since the named people get a higher salary than the unnamed ones, again talking from experience). 4) The MET had over 350 million USD operating costs in 2023. The operating costs of the costume institute are for one exhibition alone approx. 7 million USD alone. The gala gives you roughly 5-8% of the whole MET's operating costs in one night in incoming money (anything between 22 and 33 million USD looking at last year and this year). That is a huge amount and if all would go to the costume institute, that would be great. Sadly, not the full amount goes back to the costume institute. Instead, a part goes into the general budget of the MET, another is covering the costs of the event (roughly 6 million is spent on the party itself). I hope this helps a bit to put everything into perspective.

It should be mentioned that the Met Gala is the source of funding for the Met’s Costume Institute, which gets nothin from the museum’s general funds. Rather, the Gala has in recent years provided badly needed funds to the rest of the museum-and entrance to the Metropolitan Museum of Art is free to New Yorkers, and there are NEVER any extra fees for special exhibits there.

I'm glad to see this event being called out as "The Hunger Games" primarily by Gen Z on Tik Tok! It's disgusting that anyone would pay $75,000 to attend an event to raise funds for a damned Costume Institute. I know, it's their money to waste but for most of us that's a down payment on a house, a big payment on a student loan, lots and lots of groceries. (BTW, Gen Z rocks!)
@MrReded696 ай бұрын
Well since so many women starved themselves to get into those outfits, Hunger Games is a fitting name!😜

I also get that many people don’t get the whole fashion thing and make fun of it, etc. like most things it is subjective. I know the Met Gala is for the folks that are popular, musicians, models, actors/actresses etc. ppl like Tina Fey, Amy Schumer, Zane they’re not the audience for it imo.

Of course I don’t want to go and I stand with the people who are putting their foot down and speaking honestly about the event! I’ve seen videos and interviews with people who were at the Met Gala and they all seemed so uncomfortable and like they want to leave and it made me feel as if they were being silenced for so long and stopped from expressing their views on the gala as a whole! It’s so disgusting and to see many people go for others’ throats is just down right barbaric and to say that you like to go just for that is inhumane and insane! Kudos to those who spoke up, I applaud you and I appreciate your works in all your shows and movies and those who were banned from the gala, there are many more galas out there that you can go to, the Met Gala isn’t the one for you so take it as a blessing that you can go.

It’s the inauguration of the yearly costume institute’s exhibition in the Met museum. The gala itself is a fundraiser for the costume institute. It’s not a fashion show per se, but each year has a theme and a dress code to follow which a lot of people love to watch, it may not be your cup of tea but it’s indeed one of the biggest fashion events each year.
