Why has Jaishankar not solved the issue between India China and India Sri Lanka after many years as Foreign Minister? Doing something when there is no other option and succeeding in it cannot be accepted as the best strategy. Like previous foreign ministers of India, Jaishankar did not appease other countries over the occupation of Kashmir, India's aid to Bangladesh in the war, or the Pokhran nuclear test. All the decisions that India has taken in today was made out of no other choice and not by Jaishankar's genius.

The five changes suggested by Dr S Jaishankar 1. India needs a pragmatic foreign policy - abandon ideology based foreign policy for a pragmatic policy 2. India's "Panipat mentality" needs to go 3. India's foreign policy needs to take more risks 4. India needs to control narratives 5. India needs to get better at "strategic deception"

Arsh The 5 foreign policy changes proposed by Jaishankar are valid & necessary. But, he.needs to add the following to the 5 above....I will call it no.6; 1 to 5 as above...plus 6...India must add its cultural diversity, its ancient civilisational & Vedic religious & spiritual value ( " Vasudevam Kutumbhakam" ie the world is one family ), linguistic diversity, unity in diversity....all these elements should be packaged & promoted & show cased by setting up institutions in capital towns & cities across the world. & these institutions should be promoted ACTIVELY as Vedic Culture of India by regular exhibition, Vedic cultural studies courses, Vedic civilisation studies, Hindu arts, History, Sanskrit literature & language etc...etc..professionals in India can produce a package encompassing various aspects of 6 above & request Jaishankar to implement this 6th point as part of his foreign policy changes REMEMBER CHINA HAS SET UP " CONFUCUS INSTITUTE" IN ALL MAJOR CAPITALS OF THE WORLD ( including in the West, ) and has promoted it very actively over last 30 yrs. However, in last FIVE YEARS this Chinese institute has come under severe attack in all Western countries & forced to close down , because instead of real Confucis values & philosophy, it was used as a propaganda machine to subtly promote Chinese communist ideology...and at the same time Chinese govt's authoritarian governance contradicted Confucius values promoted by the Confucus INSTITUTEs set up worldwide by Chinese govt. Yes. there has been Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan ( a cultural institute) set up by Indian govt for many years in the West etc....But, it has been ineffective.....a new Vedic Institute of Indian Culture funded generously & promoted actively demonstrating India's Soft Power is the need of the hour in tandem with India's ascendancy under PM MODI should be Jaishanka r's 6th item on his agenda .. .

Time is approaching of a war to reclaim aksai chin and pok and to defend Arunachal Pradesh. Until the borders are secure and uncontested and sovereignty is not threatened there will be a requirement for offensive action. Diplomacy is buying time to strengthen the forces and hopefully to negotiate a peaceful resolution, but the action is very much on the table and the people must know that it is in national interest. Also the destabilising voices need to be handled properly and effectively so that the nation is not divided in purpose at the critical time.

Whatever foreign policy India may want to have, the implementation of that policy depends on the correction of its prime internal problem that is corruption. Currently, its position in this respect is more than 80th in the world. In a country where every person selected for a government job through examination needs to pay bribe to get an appointment, in a country where an IPS officer pays bribe to get the position of an SP in a place where he can earn crores in the form of bribe, in a country where a bridegroom is selected on the basis of the bribe he gets in his office, it is useless to look at the developing country like China. China is trying to curb the power of its monopoly capitalists, while the Indian state is pumping public money into the vaults of Adanis, Ambanis, Modis, Choksis et. al.

All the five changes in FP have a common stand: China and the 1962 defeat. Sorry to say that the elaboration is very superficial. What of domestic policy ? Will the medieval practice of politicisation of caste and caste based constituencies be allowed to continue on "ideological grounds" to "enable" the powers that be to switch back to Middle Kingdom mode whenever it suits their fancy ? #2. Engage various countries of the world on their own terms. Do we have a foreign language service to enable that ? Effective communications and liaisoning skills are the life blood of inter border commerce. In this aspect, the Russians are light years ahead of us. As are some European countries. #3 "Panipat mentality" is more acute in the tussle between states. Demographic dividend of various states are being used to suppress others. UP aligns with Gujarat and Rajasthan to suppress regional ambitions of TN, Ka, Kerala etc and W Bengal, Assam, NE etc by funding violence and illicit activities of Hindu Brotherhood, Islamic extremism. Maybe as a foreign minister he should pay attention to his resource base first. #3 Pragmatism : pragmatic policies keeping in mind longer return periods of political and economic cycles is desirable and adds constancy. It is sometimes misrepresented as ideology. Pragmatism in smaller cycles is akin to self serving behaviour (like blocking access to other shops, overcharging, evading taxes and duties etc to use the bazaar metaphor ) and that is how bazaars catch fire or break up. US policy is a prime example of such a strategy and we would be fools to imitate them in pursuit of short term goals. You cannot out-thief a thief. You have to think differently.

We are protected and uplifted to this day by the friendship that Congress made with Soviet Russia once. Soviet Russia used its UN veto power in 1957, 1961, 1962 and 1971 to protect India from UN blockades. If the Indian Congress had followed the Jaishankar policy earlier, India would have been an economically backward country like Iran and North Korea. All the decisions that India has taken in today was made out of no other choice and not by Jaishankar's genius. @@parthasarathi3855 In the last 60 years China has occupied 43,000 sq km of land belonging to India and now under BJP rule it has increased more so why should BJP not use its tact and take back those areas. What do you think Jaishankar would answer to this? I would like to give a small example of what he would answer. A few months ago, opposition ministers in the Indian Parliament asked Jaishankar questions about Katchatheevu island, to which Jaishankar stupidly replied that the incident happened in the Congress regime, so you have to ask them. It is stupid of BJP to give a minister post to such an irresponsible person.

Not sure what Jaishankar is seeking with these changes, but the most important change for the country is to stop obsessing with Pakistan. India is basically a weakling state right now and it has to cross miles and miles to catch up with China.

cynical opportunism always sounds sophisticated. but a nation despised as treacherous will find it is difficult to make constructive relations. india's chief weakness is india. building a stronger nation is not a matter of more guns and empty promises. spend money on education, health and widespread prosperity, socialism by whatever name, and teach every indian adult to shoot straight. it works for the swiss, without the need for an indian machiavelli. for that matter, prc was notable for educating even the poorest child, and sending bare-foot doctors into most remote areas. perhaps a society that shows concern for all its members is likely to prosper?
