My word of the year is "ease" so I am working hard to bring ease into different aspects of communication, nurturing families, admin and my time with students. It's not so much about 'easy' but rather a spirit of ease and streamlining systems.

I think make up lessons depend on mutual agreements. I have around 25 people in my studio (used to have 35). But I have 4 youtube channels and an full time online shop too which is technically 2 and a half full time jobs. I am happy to reschedule lessons whenever I have a free slot for whatever reason they might have in return for my flexibility. I work 7 days a week but I take holidays every 2 months because that's the only way for me to not work, to get on a plane. I don't want to pre-schedule all my holidays, the reason why I'm self-employed is if I see there is a concert in New York next month, I want to be able to go. So all I am saying is that every system can work fine as long as both parties agree to the 'rules'. We are all different creative souls and some like a 9 to 5 or a routine, others work at a very irregular pattern ☺️

Yep! If you listen closely, you’ll hear I did say that my exception was if the teacher needs a lot of flexibility. Then I think it’s only right they give flexibility in turn, as they are not reserving this spot in their schedule. The problem is that most teachers give themselves NO flexibility and their students lots.

@@ColourfulKeys Yes, I commented too quickly haha, should have waited until the end of the video. I think your videos are so useful for young teachers. There are so many piano tuition channels but haven't found any others dedicated to teachers. I really struggled 15 years ago too; was too scared to say no, never increased prices because when you start teaching, it's hard to find students. It's different now, you learn to stand up for yourself but of course, it's easier to say no when you have a waiting list and demand for your service.

I'm sorry I missed the live stream but I am LOVING each of these topics! Thank you. About the no-makeup lessons: I can totally get behind your reasoning and method of changing it. My question is: what about when the teacher has to cancel? I am both a teacher and a parent who pays other teachers for music lessons and I can't stand it when the teacher cancels last-minute, or even ahead of time, and we have to pay anyway. That really bothers me!

We have teacher time off built into our calendar for this reason. You can look on our blog for more info on how we do this but, basically, I 100% agree with you. Students should absolutely NOT pay when the teacher is absent.
