@@jorgemendez6658 (sorry if this seems offensive? Or maybe too defensive I dunno) the reason why I want to be a missionary is to build churches and tell the gospels of Jesus. Not do service. Being a missionary to me is a career that I want to do as my way to walk the path of Jesus Christ. Missionary isn't about class or social hierarchy and it shouldn't be. Its about giving everyone the choice to become a follower of christ to grow his church. That's my mission that I've wanted since a little girl. That's the mission God has given me. Of course I will love to build schools, send clothes out who needs them. Make fundraisers. I'm making a traveling church. That's my end goal. It isn't what the lady in the video is talking about. Even if you believe in God or not as long as you heard the gospel of jesus I would feel like I've done my job. Now it's your choice to pick the path you wish to take. That's my definition of me wanting to become a missionary. (sorry if this seems offensive? Or maybe too defensive I dunno)
@jorgemendez66586 жыл бұрын
Pirate Candy Pirate Candy no actually that was amazing to read. I liked how you defended your stance. I see how this could mean a lot to you and if you aim to make it your career I can more than respect that, rather I admire it because of how you aim to dedicate your life to the betterment of people. I only made said comment as it has become a matter of social commentary. However, you are not at all partaking in that rather you are holding up to the ideals said programs say they are portraying. I wish you luck in your pursuits. Also, thank you for being kind and understanding with your response.

The most important tips are that your essay needs to tell a story (with sights, sounds, smells, emotions, etc.) and it needs to be specific. You either need to try to pull the heart strings of your reader, talk about intellectual ideas that excite you, or your essay needs to be genuinely funny. That's one reason why it's so important to get other people to read your essays, to see how they react to them. The essay can also be a chance to find out very important information that isn't coming through elsewhere. if you're working 30 hours a week to support your family because your dad died unexpectedly, I want to know that to put your academic performance in context. Personally, I think "pull the heart strings" essays work the best for elite schools because they care so much about looking for kids who overcame adversity. Try to make the admissions committee cry, seriously. At least one of your essays should be about how you overcame adversity in your life, but should be a *story* about a specific moment/event/struggle/disability (in your personal life) and how it changed you/made you mature as a person. The main purpose of the "overcoming adversity" essay is to show how you *grew* or *matured* as a person, not simply to highlight a struggle. I wouldn't recommend writing about a mental illness you had/have though because (unfortunately) colleges are kind of uncomfortable about having mentally ill students on campus. The other essay can be about intellectual ideas, be funny, or another "heart strings" story (maybe a story, with sights, sounds, etc., about your family and a bad event/moment in your family and how you relate to your family members and such, or maybe an inspiring story involving you and a family member). "Family" essays work well, although essays where you write about your ethnicity/culture are very common, so try to make it unique and "pulling the heart strings" if you go the ethnicity/culture route. Another type of essay that can be really good is where you mention a *very specific* thing about the school and why that specific thing makes the school a great fit for you. For example, you could mention the university's motto and talk about how it relates to your own beliefs. This shows that you have genuine interest in the university, that you bothered to read up on the university's history. It literally takes 5 minutes to Google information like that, but makes a really big difference.

Justin C This is such a relief to read! My college essay was centered around an adverse event that happened during my childhood, but I didn’t turn it into a “sob story”. I turned the story around to discuss how that event had matured me and even benefited me in many ways in my future. I‘m hoping colleges don’t think it is generic🤣

My essay was kind of a subversion of the "I Got an A Essay". On my transcripts I had a lot of great grades and then a few honestly terrible ones. I knew they'd wonder what happened and the grades embarrassed me so I kinda just bit the bullet and went into why I got those grades, why it's not an excuse, and why I'll never do it again. I talked about the pressure my family put on me and how I crumbled under it due to my depression that started to flare up in high school. How I just lost all motivation to work in those classes. How much I regret that and how I've grown from it. And apparently it was good enough to get me into my first choice college! I move in on the 7th ☺️

I did the mission trip essay😅 But I got into my dream school into one of the most competitive majors. I guess what I did differently was that it was a service camp and I did it multiple years instead of just one and done. If u choose to write about a service project, don’t just say u learned something. Say HOW you took what you learned and applied it to your life. Maybe u started helping out more often, or started advocating for change. That shows that when you learn something you don’t just throw it away, but apply it to your life, and I believe that will help make ur essay stronger. If you haven’t really done anything since that service project, then maybe it’s not that strong of a topic to write about. But at the end of the day... write whatever u want.

I kind of get where the Jesus essay people are coming from though. I attended a Christian school my whole life and we are taught that the day we accept Christ is the best day of our entire lives and the most important thing that will ever happen to us. As a non Christian I totally get why it all sounds like bullshit an most people don't want to hear about that, but on the other hand, I also see why someone would feel so inclined to write that as it is very acceptable to write a college essay about the best day of your life.

it was an incredibly hard time for me questioning whether there is a god. Ultimately though, I looked at the evidence, and found the truth and as hard as that time was, I came out the other side even better than ever. God and Jesus truly change people so yea people do want to write about that stuff.
@jj-vf7wm4 жыл бұрын
@@skatergrl13 Exactly! I’m writing an essay for college and I had a moment in my life where it really hurt me and what not. However I see where Jesus used that for good and ultimately led me to salvation and made me realize how desperately I need him to save me from hell! Something I didn’t put much thought into until I went through what I did and realized the sins I was committing. Life is not easy at all but now I found the truth and hope all because of God’s grace! I look back and I see how sinful my heart is and how selfish it is and I see things in a new light all because of Jesus. Definitely did change me.

This was so funny and so true. I was looking for videos for graduate school, but high school videos are helpful too when looking for things to avoid. I've found that being completely genuine is the best way to go. As long as I feel like the letter represents me and sounds like my story - it always works for me. Being genuine (and an individual) really comes across well to anyone reading it.

The “I got an A” essay can be pulled off with enough humility and crafting. If the focus is not solely on the “A” but rather you overcoming some type of adversity that results in you getting the A in the end, It can be done well. You want the reader to leave knowing more about you as a person. Not just the A. It’s all in how you present your narrative and tie everything in. However, I do believe since it’s a cliché it’s an essay topic that separates the vapid, one dimensional from the well rounded 3D student.

The “I got an A/work hard-->succeed” essay is not always cliche. I worked really hard this past semester, but my grades only reflect the result of the hard work. I’m a college senior, but I’d still write this kind of essay if I were pursuing another degree because of the challenges stacked against me, which you don’t see on my transcript. I suffered a death in the family the first day of class in the spring, dealt with grief, working, singing in a demanding chorus, preparing for a competition in the summer, and a summer internship. In the fall, I missed the first week of class because I was out of town to compete in a national pageant, sprained my ankle at the pageant, competed on crutches, and came back to do two weeks worth of work in one. I was bedridden for half the semester, and made a lot of sacrifices to focus on my grades. For me, it was about so much more than working hard to achieve a goal. The sacrifices I made to succeed were more important because they changed who I was as a person. I wasn’t dealt the easiest hand in life, which is another story, but it was this past year and especially the last semester that I fully realized what it means to rise above challenges.

"if you work hard, your grades and test scores are gonna show it. End of story." This is not true. There are many situations in which hard work would not be reflected in test scores or grades. Working a job outside of school to support your family, raising your siblings predominantly on your own, or constantly moving like many military families do are three examples of how life outside of school may detract from grades. I think an essay that shows how your life circumstances forced you to work hard outside of school can be extremely compelling. They can also serve to explain that you are a hard working person even if your grades and tests make it seem as if you aren't.

Then write a story about working a job, supporting your sibling, or moving--- those are all GREAT topics-- don't write about studying and then getting an A. :)

ya I wrote my essay and it was more than 800 words. I got it to 650 by cutting down words or phrases that either aren't needed or are too repetitive. The first time I went over my essay I didn't notice any problems. But just give it some time, and don't look at your essay for a day or two and when you go back you'll see many mistakes you overlooked before

I would suggest that you should aim for an essay that would appeal to any school. I got into NYU, but with the same essay that was sent to all of my schools (it was more about a maturing experience/adversity than showing my creative side, although a lot of people have a lot of success with more creative essays! Everyone that I talked to that got into elite colleges seemed to have a very unique essay.) Also, keep in mind that with schools that receive as many applications as NYU, they may put more pressure on GPA and test scores than essays (may depend on the program, though 🤷♂️)

jflyers fan It's not about some life changing experience it's about how you see your life and the opportunities that you've had. If you see that your parents marriage/relationship has shaped you and how the parents of your friends effected them differently then write about it. "When my best friend sought comfort during her parent's divorce I realized just how much of an impact parents' relationships have on their children. I appreciate the hard work my parents put in to manage their lives, finances, and care for me. I can see now how many times my parents wanted to scream and cry or even leave one another but stuck it out. I feel this has made me a more careful yet considerate person when it comes to choosing friends and partners". If you can't see how little things change and effect you then that's on you.
@oliviaborie6 жыл бұрын
jflyers fan nobody has a perfect life and just because you never had a hard life doesn’t mean that the other people that did, are faking it. I think that you need to be careful when saying these things online because you don’t know everyone’s experiences. You might really make someone angry. And I know you probably don’t care about people’s feelings but you should. These things effect people greatly. It effects their view of their life and experiences and that can be devastating to someone’s mental health.

I'm an academic. I work in a history department at a university (I know I'm not being specific, but truly, I wouldn't be that hard to find). I think learners should keep in mind that other learners who are not Christian are always instructed not to put any religious experiences and even volunteer work on resumes and CVs, much less write essays about them. I cannot tell you how many times in Speech and Debate I was told not to wear my Jewish star necklace (and I was ranked as one of the top ten debaters in the nation when I graduated). I was told not to include anything at all about temple volunteer work on my resume, despite the volume of the volunteer work I did. We need to move in the direction of solidarity with those who can't include these activities in the first place without worrying who's reading their essays. It's very telling to me that 2/5 topics discussed here are 1) religious in nature 2) clearly from Christians, because nearly anyone else would be afraid to write about being Muslim/Jewish/Sikh/etc. Christians have the privilege of not having to think about it.
@marsiah81122 жыл бұрын
huh? Muslims are the most open with their religion it may not be as known or prominent here in the US but the majority is defiantly not "afraid". Christians are the majority religion here in the US so of course it is something brought up a lot but im not sure how that correlates with "privilege"... When i lived in california, the jewish religion was very much spoken about and seen. Dont make comparisons and down play the struggle of being one religion compared to another , its a contradiction.

I wish they'd just get rid of the essay. I don't like to share personal things with people I don't know. It's incredibly uncomfortable, and honestly I don't think it's terribly relevant. It just seems like I'm being asked to be vulnerable with a big, cold, faceless institution, and it's just... offputting. I don't really have much difficulty sharing my transcripts or virtually anything else applications ask for, but if I'm going to pay someone to listen to part of my life story, I feel like that should be a therapist, not some guy at a desk who honestly couldn't care less about me and has no reason to.

There are a lot of people out there that don't have great gpas and scores so for them, I think essays pave the way to hopefully getting into a college they want to. My country has the system of "just scores" and it's absolutely horrible. Over time, kids have practically been stripped of personalities and it's like they're being manufactured by schools to be one generic person who scores 99% on all their exams.
