Bethy 715 It definitely depends on the college for animal science! UC Davis is super competitive for animal bio/science as it is has the second best vet school program in the world. The animal science major is not widely available for freshman’s choice so idk if that affects anything either!

Major in something STEM related. Those tend to be more rewarding and have more job prospects. Only do it if you can problem-solve and do some math. At its core, STEM is mathematical based.

OtakuQueen So, neuroscience is classified by admissions committees as a major in the biological sciences, whereas other sciences like chemistry and physics are classified under physical sciences. Other categories of majors include things like humanities and social sciences. Historically, people who major in biological sciences have a smaller admit rate to med school because there are so many of them compared to the other categories like humanities and physical sciences. Honestly though, GPA, MCAT scores, recommendations, and extracurriculars matter way more than the major you choose. Choose something you’re passionate about and run with it. A less traditional major in humanities can push a strong candidate into the admit profile, but you won’t be penalized for majoring in a biological science. If you really want to go to med school, your passion for medicine will shine through, and you will have the grades, scores, recommendations, and extracurriculars to back you up.

How much math do you all need for your CS degrees? Mine only requires four. But I'm also a math minor, so six total. Math required: Calculus 1, Calculus 2, Matrices and Linear Algebra, and Intro to Probability(Calc-based). Math minor: one 3000 lvl math, and one 4000 lvl math. There is also a discrete math course but it's generally called Logic and Algorithms at my Uni.

here are some encouraging thoughts about computer science: a very very close family member without any college degree decided at age 39 that he wanted to have a college degree. He chose computer science. Repeat at age 39. He enrolled in his local community college getting an A.S in computer science but watch this, it was a transfer program into his state University. He graduated from the community college with a GPA of 3.89. The state university accepted him without questions. He graduated at age 42 with a B.S in Computer Science. Hint: President Obama gave the commencement speech at his graduation ceremony. America gave a chance for him, an immigrant who arrived with a few hundred dollars in his pockets. I dare to mention that he did all the college and university work while having a family and also being the sole provider for his family with a job. Also English not being his native language. Everything is possible if you really want something.

So no, you can’t just switch majors at every school, maybe some. My school allows 1000 and has probably a 10% acceptance rate into CS but a higher rate at other departments, wouldn’t be fair to just let someone waltz in right....

I m a person who been programming for years, I made apps and this is what I can tell you about CS. Programming is about problem solving, using algorithms to solve complex problems as well. Summary: it's for problem solving enthusiasts. If you want to be a programmer just because of the coolness, act smart or anything just because of the appearance, well you won't get anywhere in CS or else I will give you any amount of money. And also, if you want to code just for the high income, well maybe you can do it but you won't get anywhere that's very high.

Engineering and CS are hard to get into, but they also have ridiculous drop out rates after people take the first few weed out courses and realize it’s not for them. Don’t apply under them unless you are certain you are passionate about them.

@@jems3732 You can always apply to college with an undeclared major! It doesn’t hurt you at all, colleges understand that you may need more time to figure out what you want to do. I will say that if you’re looking to transfer into a competitive major as an undeclared, it could potentially be difficult, but aside from that there’s no reason not to do it. It’s a lot better than just picking something random like psychology-that might hurt you more than it helps you.

As a theatre major I can definitely confirm it is extremely competitive. Many programs get over 1000 applicants for 20 spots. It’s also the only major where trivial things like your hair colour determine if u get in😂

FYI, BSN Nursing programs are competitive because nursing faculty are scarce. Additionally, the clinical experiences (both in on campus simulation labs and hands on training at hospitals and nursing homes, etc) are necessary and need to be maintained in small group numbers in order provide quality instruction. For both of theses reasons many colleges restrict the number of nursing major acceptances. Universities that have a high overall acceptance rate will likely have a MUCH smaller acceptance rate for nursing. Some colleges offer direct entry nursing programs, where first year students begin nursing classes immediately. Others are not direct admit, and students are accepted to the university but then apply separately to the nursing program during sophomore year. Generally students need to have a strong college gpa to win a spot. In my opinion (just a mom of two college students, one in engineering and one in nursing), high school students interested in nursing should cast a wide net in applying to colleges. And they should strongly consider direct admit colleges. If not, they need to ask themself what will they do if they are not admitted to nursing after spending two years at college.

For 6 & 7, I can tell from my own experience as an accounting major that any business major is challenging. At my school (DePaul University) every business major has to take an accounting 101 class which has a fail rate of around 20% of students. Many other required courses for business students have similar failure rates.

I’m an adult student majoring in psychology at a competitive online accelerated program. My school has FIVE Psychology degrees each with a different concentration. I was able to get in with no waitlisting because I knew exactly what I wanted to do. My advice is to not overlook those concentrations or specialized programs. They can help you skip a lot of general education classes and even better streamline your degree and set you up for better opportunities later.

About half of my school wants to major in computer science... But they dont know that it has math. My whole school basically hates math too. I can't emphasize how annoying it is to have just a bunch of people say they want to major in something because of the pay. I had one person ask me why I wanted to go into computer science and I said because I like math and I love problem solving. They then said that computer science wasn't for me and I should just major in mathematics.

From my experience as being a nursing and business major. Nursing was far more competitive for varied reasons. 1. Overall GPA needed to be higher, you basically need all A’s to have a chance. Knew a girl who was was on a 2 year waiting list regardless of having a 4.0 GPA. Just bc so many people are applying and there is a limited amount of seats. Whereas in business there is probably more people but their is far more spots for transferring. And GPA generally isn’t as competitive unless you’re trying to get into USC or something. 2. Class load. Nursing courses have been more competitive and much harder than any business courses I’ve taken aswell. Only 14/40 students passed my anatomy course which is required verses about 50+/60 students I’ve seen pass most business courses I’ve taken. Note: this is just my experience in CA if it helps. Lots of things to consider when choosing a major after all.

If you're definitely planning on going to graduate school, it helps to major in something DIFFERENT than all the other applicants, to help you stand out. For example, English is a great major for law school, and it's even good for med school if you make sure to have your prereqs, too.

I think it was when we toured Vanderbilt and met with the head of the physics department. He told us that he didn't understand why people applied to the engineering school. They had a much lower chance of being admitted, but if you just applied to Vandy, you had two years to declare your major, and could freely choose engineering at any time. It was very easy to change majors, and a declaration weren't even required till end of sophomore year. So what ever school your applying to, find out how easy it is to switch departments and majors. Do you have to get accepted into the engineering program, or one your in the school you can move about freely? You'll need to know what courses to take, so you don't fall behind the major you want, but it's unlikely freshman and sophomore classes would be closed out to non-majors.

There are some majors that are not available in some universities, but if you write to them, they reply that the particular major is combination or couple of courses or can be worked out with particular teachers. My question is how do you decide which type of college is best for which major? And how do you make a college list if you are pretty much undecided? **** tip for Prospective CS students**** My dad working for activison and has a director’s position so I would say I’m pretty informed on what they look for in someone they are hiring. If you are worried that you will not get into the best cs school or program plz don’t worry! Every tech company would rather hire someone with more skills and a cs degree from a state university than someone that want to Harvard. You may think I’m joking, but I’m serious, his work went to recruit at Ivy League schools and none of the students had an impressive portfolio. Now I’m not saying you shouldn’t get a bachelors in cs, all I am saying is that don’t be worried about the name on the diploma because essentially that’s all it is. *********************************************** Don’t stress, live life, and do what you love!!

Although computer science is very popular, many people lack the skill of problem solving. Anyone can learn programming languages, but not everyone have the problem solving skill that jobs are looking for. If you’re applying for CS for an elite college, just make sure you have some sort of experience with CS (such as game development)

thanks for recognizing how competitive the arts are... there are virtually no safeties for the arts if you want even an adequate education, forget an exceptional one. im applying for music right now and no one realizes how indefinite and unquantifiable my chances are. just to add on, the arts aren't competitive just cause a lot of people are applying but also bc of the nature of an education in the arts... it requires intimacy. at least for music, there has to be a really small student to faculty ratio and a small student body. programs im applying to have incoming classes of 20 STUDENTS. it's such a long shot no matter what.

Matthew Blonder depends on the school. Most colleges like to see well rounded students who can excel in a variety of subjects while technical schools are more science oriented. You can take all of those single subject classes but try to have some variety in your schedule. Also if you’re asian, excelling in math and science is seen as a typical asian trait and may even hurt your chances.

Yes definitely. Well rounded is kind of overrated. Another way of looking at well rounded is not being particularly good/strong on a subject. If you’re passionate about a subject and intend on majoring it I don’t see how specializing in it and taking courses for it would hurt your application.

If you want a job in software development/engineering, major in something very CS related with "engineering" in the title. CSE is a very good major that looks good on your resume but also majors like electrical engineering and computer engineering are often more desirable to companies than a traditional computer science degree. Companies like to have people with a diverse set of skills and not only topics in programming languages.

There also exist programs where you may just have to apply early to guarentee a spot. For example, I go to Michigan State and my program (James Madison College) works like this! You don't need above MSU average scores to get in but space is limited and you have to apply early to guarentee a spot. Side note -- I love JMC sooo much. If you're looking at political science/public policy/political philosophy/international relations programs at state universities, JMC is a great option! It's a small program (1,200ish students total) in a big university (50,000 people at MSU). We offer four majors: political theory and constitutional democracy, social relations and policy, international relations, and comparative cultures and politics. Your freshman year all JMC kids live together and your JMC classes/professor's offices/JMC career services office/writing consultancy are all in the same building! Plus you don't declare your major within JMC until the end of your freshman year so you have time to decide. Sorry for the rant -- just really passionate about my program.

where does architecture fall? maybe there’s less people who want to major in architecture but getting into those programs, staying in those programs, and working to prevail in those programs are extremely difficult. the dropout rate is crazy and the work required just to compete is hours upon hours of work per day in a studio space (not even your dorm where other majors would be studying flash cards) building model iteration after model iteration and designing space after space

Can you make a video about the TOP 10 easier majors that many applicants may be interested? the whole range of "back door" admissions type majors or just majors that people forget about that may still allow applicants to switch easily. One that come to mind is Chemistry major (via college of chemistry at berkeley) - while Chemistry is a top department at UC Berkeley, getting into the "college of chemistry" was easier than maybe even the general "college of letters and science" . So some schools are compartmentalized and admissions also fall into that category.

I don’t know what schools you’re looking at, but generally, pre-law is usually not a major, but you get a special advisor. You can major in anything and be pre-law, as long as you take the LSAT and satisfy any other pre-reqs law schools may have.

Air Crash maybe your problem is, is that your trying to do to much. Economics and Finance both have opportunities and lots of learning, pairing either of those with engineering won’t do anything for you unless your an engineer with a minor in those or a finance/Econ major with a minor in something tech related. You can’t have both unfortunately or say you can’t be great at both

I would say in general, yes. My school however has a more collaborative teaching strategy and I think long term that will be helpful for finding jobs because we’re looking out for each other .

Mohammed Zaid when you take more rigorous classes like ap or honors, you’re able to get more points for the class so your cumulative weighted gpa will be much higher. Your unweighted gpa is calculated without the points on a 4.0 scale. It’s different at every high school

Ava P. To just be honest and declare her major, some know and will say undeclared or get in for an easier major then change. So that’s what she is putting on her applications. I wouldn't take this list too seriously. I went to a few colleges (military) and none of them cared what my major is. That said, the first 2 years of college don't matter. It's all gen eds and electives you'd taken one way or the order. So you can literally declare any major. It's all the same until halway into your junior year.

Hey! I’m currently a journalism major now! It depends on what you want to do in terms of communications but a journalism degree is really good for TV broadcast, radio, and print stuff. If you want to be a reporter then it’s a good major to have. A surprising number of schools have PR as a major (mine does!) just sometimes they’re in the business school or part of marketing. It’s all about what you want to do in the field that determines what major is right for you! I hope this was helpful

At many colleges, communications is more about the theory of communications (i.e. do preschoolers punch dolls after watching violent cartoons) and less appealing to specific media employers than Journalism in my experience, as Journalism is more of a "trade" and communications is more of a social science / academic pursuit (I can't speak for all colleges but this was true at Stanford). I think that's a misconception among many students who enroll in school and sign up for a major. In any case, a career in media or communications is going to be competitive (says a film MFA... :)). PR and marketing generally pay better than Journalism and Communications-- at least where I live (Los Angeles), though I'm sure there are exceptions. PR is also very competitive. Marketing is in pretty high demand/employable if you're interested in related fields, but many colleges don't offer a major in it (or it's inside the business school). You might research people in career fields you like and look at their paths as a form of research. You can still major in Comm and go into marketing. MBA is really the path to getting a 6 figure paycheck off that path if you are interested in that direction.
