hey man. Nice video. Is that a D 02? My most reliable backup and the guitar I’ve had the longest. Also probably the guitar I’ve got the most complements about the plugged in sound.

Immediately started getting better when I stopped doing stupid pointless exercises and playing songs instead. Mostly just three chord songs. Would you rather spend your life training to play baseball or actually playing baseball? And I wish someone would’ve showed me to strum lighter. I always drummed way too hard and the only solution was to squeeze the fats tighter which made everything sharp and harsh as well as the dreaded finger dents. practicing squeezing lighter by strumming lighter has vastly improved my tone

You're correct. I'm guilty of obsessively doing exercises. That's fine for warming up but learning songs and transcribing them is much more rewarding.

Vintage self taught guitarist here. A lot of your tips are things I’ve had to deal with over the years the 55 year I’ve been playing. I was expecting to find out some new tricks to improve my playing. Instead, what I found out is that I’ve organically been doing these things for years now. The last point in your list is the one that I’ve been conscious of for years. Interesting video. My best friend worked in studios all his working life. He used to coach me on elements of my playing and performance technique. The one piece of he gave me was once you’ve learned a song, if you make a mistake while playing, keep going. Performance requires continuity, and that isn’t conducive with stopping because you made a mistake. Performances require that you get over yourself and finished the song.

It's very hard to get how something is done without having a teacher catching mistakes. Slowing down is key for me. I was going through lessons too fast not realizing I wasn't really learning anything. This channel is where I learned about getting it right before moving further.🥰

Self-taught guitarist here. I had not idea about music theory when I first picked up the guitar. So I learned that too, and I sticked to improvising. I haven't tried to learn a song yet. Improvisation is just so satisfying.

Using voice recorder pro, recording my practices has been the best tool, as a self directed learner, hearing the playback has adjusted my accuracy, and hearing when I GET the harmonious chords right, has been so encouraging

I really enjoyed your video and I am definitely guilty of committing some of the mistakes, I'm going to take your suggestions to heart. Thank you. BTW I'm 74 and started playing 5 yrs. ago. Not easy for an older guy with fickle fingers but I play everyday and have some fun.

Thats good advice. I write songs, so in some ways i make my own rules. Too many channels focus on people playing covers. I am self taught, a friend showed me the basic chords and then i unleashed myself. Good video.

Brilliant points. It could be applied to other (non guitar related) things too! It’s a very good point about challenging yourself and getting those practice hours in. Thank you

The number one thing i learnt is to learn songs you like. It helps you enjoy the challenge plus can really open your eyes to your weak points.

I'm really interested in the ear training exercise, but I'm having trouble figuring out where to start and how exactly to go about it. Do you have any videos going over this exercise more in depth?

I am playing on and off for 45 years now. I still get frustrated if I don’t get three minutes of a new difficultish song down within ten minutes. Having the feeling that I’ll never be able to play it. Eventually, I always get there and very often it takes days, sometimes even weeks. Oh, and I know what not even to try.

Same here at 48 years playing . I focus so much on my new tunes that I forget my old tunes 1000’s are well and truly forgotten whilst I remember only the current 6 or 10 tunes which continuously morphs . It seems a bit of a waste sometimes but I only play for myself anyway . I don’t know how players remember so much . I can improvise as long as I know the chords but I enjoy really working on a tune .

I got to the point you describe with self teaching and found a great teacher who taught me much of what you convey here. He allowed me to progress and gave the tools to eventually go out and play in public. The points you convey work and allowed me to reach the dream of playing out in front of people successfully. Great video and well presented points.

Hi So should I do the same with chords as far as playing song by ear playing rhythm guitar? Or is this only for plucking individual notes which I’m terrible at. 🤦
@geldeddonkey73203 ай бұрын
When I think of the time i’ve wasted. Just learn your chords in the context of the circle of fifths (always as that will give rudimentary guitar music theory) .Learn triades of all chords in all positions , learn major and minor pentatonic scales (over time progress and revise regularly). learning songs along the way and the other stuff will become meaningful. Find progressions you like write a song for it , sing it .🇦🇺 Utube is fantastic , wish I had it starting out 55 years back😂

Sound advice! I've been watching your online lessons for a few months now. I've struggled with thumb placement for a while and your tip helps, but here, around the 9:10 mark, I noticed that your palm does not touch the neck when playing certain chords, but at 9:23, it does. Whenever I'm practicing, I feel like I have to have the part of my palm that's right below my index finger touching the neck for 'support', and I've tried to play certain chords like C and Em without my palm making contact with the neck, but I can't seem to avoid it. Is this something I should avoid or is it fine to do with certain chords? Thanks!
@kimlodrodawa1234 ай бұрын
I can do an F-Barre chord without using the thumb and play a little melody like that. ;)
@philgoelz4883 ай бұрын
You forgot just holding the guitar correctly, which you were not. This takes the pressure off the wrist and allows better contact with the strings. There's plenty of time to do it wrong later.

I have always played by ear. But, I don't have a clue what the names of the notes are or how to find a note that is on the music score on the guitar neck. How is the best way to make that transition?
@scottenglert40834 ай бұрын
Good place to start is learning notes along thickest (6th) string open and at the dots - open (E), 1st fret sometimes has a dot (F), 3rd fret (G), 5th fret (A), 7th (B), 9th (C sharp / D flat), 12th (E again one octave higher)... then do the same on the next string - open (A), 1st fret (A sharp / B flat), 3rd fret (C), 5th fret (D), 7th (E), 9th (F sharp / G flat), 12th (A again one octave higher). Those are a great place to start because they are the root notes for a lot of barre chords.

self-taught is maybe not the best way to go , if you only want to play known songs and melodies , but if you want to create new musik and melodies , you need self thought .
