The hunt is the fun, finding 1k records for a dollar is part of the appeal. Digging in old barns in the middle of nowhere is my idea of an ideal day out, especially in countries where vinyl buying is not so common.

Absolutely! The hunt is what keeps me going, I just always have to remind myself to take the time to appreciate what I have too. It's a balance that's hard to keep.

@@jazzvinylcollector Yes, I've met a few folks who hit the thrifts 6 days a week and shake if someone beats them to something. I became a dealer having built up a solid network of connections folks tend to bring you collections, so the hunting is less of a need these days, thankfully. Although I still get up at 5am some weekends to hit the fleas and yard sales, but not often!

The best deal I ever got on eBay was someone listed a Twilight Saga soundtrack vinyl for $10. I just kept thinking I was going to get a CD. I didn’t want to ask too many questions to tip them off but I got the vinyl version delivered to me

Nice video. I have found some rare pieces for a couple bucks I ended up selling that i do regret. The money I got at the time was too alluring. Of course they go for double or triple now but you are right there are deals to be had out there. I pulled the move you mentioned about hiding in a stack from a local dealer selling out if his garage. Funny enough they were already picked over from a record show because I think the guy had no knowledge of jazz. The blue notes, Miles, Coltrane etc was all gone. There must have been a hidden box not from the show because I found a couple strata east and ahmad jamal awakening all mint for $3 a piece. I probably grabbed 25 records just so he wouldn’t think i was cherry picking the goods. I guess its a classic move.

Well, these are great purchase stories and finds, but the thing is you’re living in the mecca of jazz, where finding such a gold brick is satyfying, but expectable someday. In Poland we were detached for years of Iron Curtain held by USSR and if you were not alligned to someone, who was allowed to travel abroad, or you wasn’t a music/radio journalist there was no chance to get even close to the deal like that. Nowadays, more than 30 years after switching to democracy it’s more often, but the records are usually crazy expensive, when they got their way here. And that was my biggest achievent, when I found a definitely 60’s or 70’s era Blue Train record. Alongside with that in a natch that appeard on the local selling service was the Judgement by Andrew Hill. Both mono, both RVG eared from 60’s, both priced less than 20$ each… I got some more in that batch, including Thelonius Monk, Ahmand Jamal and Herbie Hancock Takin’ off priced similar. It was a catch of my life and I was never happier to get anything else in my short collector’s career in Poland. Great video and storytelling, can’t wait to get more of these! PS Today arrived 78 BN Sidewinger by Lee Morgan with a possibly oryginal signature of Joe Henderson and it cost me around 50$ as it was not listed as signed. Is that a food deal tho? 😎

I've encountered that fellow in the Llano record store. I found a lot of excellent 78s (black gospel quartets, rhythm & blues and country). I sold him an Elvis Sun 45. I think I'll go there soon again. I'm not far from there. Thanks for for reminding me.

Just came across this video - great job. Just curious if you felt any pangs of guilt about buying the mismarked record on ebay. I had that feeling when I found an original Blue Note Horace Parlan Headin South (RVG ear, 43rd st. Etc) for $1 at a house sale in upstate NY (also picked up an original Ziggy Stardust and a couple of Zappa records for $1. I felt great initially but have sometimes felt I took advantage. Cheers

Don't feel bad. You gotta realize that most people don't know what to do with this stuff and just want it gone.
@jazzvinylcollector
@jazzvinylcollector Жыл бұрын
I've felt guilt before for sure, usually that's when you learn more about the seller and their situation rather than just getting one record for a deal. Most of the time, for someone who is selling 100 or more records, getting a deal on one isn't going to change anyone's life. I've formed temporary/online bonds with some sellers that end up lasting months where a lot of money changes hands over time and in those situations I'm usually up front about explaining what things are worth, and that I'm not a market price buyer but that I'll buy in bulk, I'll be easy to deal with, I don't ask for partial refunds, etc.

A few weeks ago I saw a copy of Newport Rebels, on Candid Records, in an antique shop. It looked like an early pressing to me, and I knew the odd story of that album and how short a lifespan the original Candid Records had. I also knew that Charles Mingus, who was heavily involved in Candid, was a person who cared about sound quality a lot. However, I hesitated for ages before getting it; because the disc was scratched and worn looking. Eventually I decided to get it. It turned out to be a first pressing (or a very early pressing). You know when records look quite scratched but it doesn't show in the music? This was one of those. And the sound quality was just phenomenal. I think it may be the best sounding jazz record I have got so far, other than the 1995 pressing of A Love Supreme. Just a great find. Twenty Australian dollars.

Another great video! Can you do one describing what deep groove means? There’s a lot of terms thrown around that I’m not familiar with and not many KZbin vids defining them. Thanks!
@jazzvinylcollector
@jazzvinylcollector Жыл бұрын
the "deep groove" or "DG" is a round indentation through the glued-on label at the center of the record. It has nothing to do with the sound at all, but has become associated with quality because many of the records with a deep groove are on thicker vinyl and were pressed at pressing plants that are synonymous with quality, however it adds no sonic benefit in and of itself. You most often see it on Blue Note albums (from about 1956 - 1961), on Prestige albums including the NY and NJ era, on early Riverside, Savoy, and in the Columbia "6-eye" era of labels

You are mentioning mostly American labels. Have you ever run into any European free jazz stuff on vinyl? I would imagine old FMP or Hat Hut albums would fetch a pretty penny!
@jazzvinylcollector
@jazzvinylcollector Жыл бұрын
Don’t run into European free jazz that much in the US. I’m also not really looking for free jazz so much, but I’m certainly aware of some titles that fetch big bucks. At the end of the day, I buy what I want to listen to, and while I’ve played and studied some of that in the past, it isn’t what I want on my turntable

My best find was buying a sealed copy of a limited edition of the Classic Records pressing of "Kind of Blue" for $1. Found it when buying a pair of speakers off of Craigslist during lunch and it was sitting on a box of LPs. Had know idea of what it was until I got back to my office.

Just wondering if the New Jazz Eric Dolphy original has the trident logo on it, now I see that it does. Were there earlier NJ pressings that didn't? Anybody know?

You mean the Mal Waldron title, or which Eric Dolphy title are you referring to? The original does have the New Jazz trident logo on the front, and they started using it on the front of New Jazz covers around catalog NJ 8263.

Great vid. Thanks for sharing the stories. I recently found in my local record store here in Denmark an all around near mint copy of Coltrane’s My favorite things, US first stereo pressing. And it was only (the equivalent of) 11$. I was also prepared to “sneak” it out between other records, but luckily the store owner was out to lunch when I got to the counter and the random clerk didn’t notice a thing. Still can’t believe the luck I was in that day :D
