In 2013, the Japanese "Disk Union" mono series released BLP1592 Sonny Clark Quintet as "cool struttin' vol. 2" with a similar cover to BLP1588, with the woman's high heels going the other direction. I assume it was another take from the same photo shoot.

Maybe just flipped the negative of the original shot.

I spent my life in product management - there are projects that do not get off the ground, go along some and then die. Some go nowhere when funding, the company, or the artist goes in a different direction - happens more than you think.

Fantastic episode! It is crazy to think that there are plenty of Blue Note completists with a hole in their collections that can only be filled by a one of a kind test pressing! I wish I were younger and richer in 2007/2009 as those are very reasonable prices all things considered! I'm more of a passive Blue Note collector myself given Blue Note Classics and Tone Poets, but I'm working my way through the Impulse! discography more actively (aiming for the first 200 + 50 of the best from the rest, just at 100 now) and that too has some holes that were never filled. Apparently many of them had test pressings too, with some released elsewhere on other labels/in other territories) and others remain completely unissued (probably lost forever now given the Universal fire).

Really interesting topic and so many great albums in the list. Luckily I managed to pick up a copy of the stereo test pressing of Hank Mobley's BST84241 from a dealer in Japan. Actually it contains 3 tracks only from the Slice Of The Top Session, the other 3 tracks are Straight No Filter, Chain Reaction and Soft Impressions, so that the album would have been a mixture of 2 different dates. 2 tracks from the Slice Of The Top session, namely Cute 'n Pretty and A Touch Of Blue are not on the TP at all. What a tangled web! Anyway, thanks for your fascinating videos, I really enjoy them. All the best from the UK!

I like to collect the old inner sleeves like the one you showed---especially if they are in color and have other albums advertised on them. Atlantic had some pretty cool ones in the 60s and some of the RCA living stereo ones are great too.
@jazzvinylcollector
@jazzvinylcollector Жыл бұрын
Yes, Atlantic did indeed have great inner sleeves. I hold onto the Prestige and Blue Note ones in particular, although I haven't quite yet determined why. Some people try and match the appropriate inner sleeve with the original album so that it's "complete" but I seem to just keep them all in a folder

Great topic, thanks for research... I am just a bit sceptical about silly test pressing prices. As you know, some test pressings might be wrong and discarded for that reason. You never know what you got escpecially of album was not release for some reason (sonic reasons??). Julien
@jazzvinylcollector
@jazzvinylcollector Жыл бұрын
You're absolutely right. There may be serious issues with some of the unreleased sessions that are inherent to the master tape or issues with that particular test pressing. I know that Savoy used to press single sides at a time for their test pressings. Today, test pressings seem to be made for exclusive access to buyers who want to pay more for a blank label copy to feel like they got something special. Back then, they had a much more practical and utilitarian approach for making testing pressings.

“Lush Life” was released in Japan in 1980 under the title “ Sweet Slumber” . My copy is a DMM from 1986 and has 1967 liner notes by Ira Gitler. It’s a Ballads/ Standards album but has a killer line up of musicians. The cover design is a Reid Miles but definitely not one of his better covers. Loved the video, fun and informative.

Funny enough the last 2 thrift store jazz records I found were the Japanese and the later DMM of Lush Life. In two different spots about a week apart. The Japanese copy is warmer and the DMM more crisp in the high ends. I can't make up my mind which one to keep.

I see someone else has noted that Blue Mitchell's "Step Lively" is available as part of a box set. I just got a new, sealed copy last month on Discogs that was described as a Scorpio "reissue from sometime in 2000s / 2010s." I see nothing on the label or cover to indicate that it's anything other than a Blue Note stereo LP. (I can't read what's written in the lead-out groove space.)

What a missed opportunity for Blue Note to not release all of their catalogue in premium fashion (music and covers). Blue Note's cover art deserves nothing but premium execution, not these cheap/thin BNC covers.
@InigoPedruezaTV
@InigoPedruezaTV Жыл бұрын
I agree absolutely with you. The Bleu Note Classic is really nice concerning sound and master tapes work, but the cover are worse than European Free Rights editions like Wax Jazz or Jazz Images. They are lighter and the quality is poor if you don’t protect them immediately, nothing to compare with Tone Poet’s. In Europe the BNC price is in between 25/30€, the Tone Poet over 40/45€…😵‍💫

Hello, I'm thinking these Blue Note albums that didn't get released got pulled because of copyright infringements. They recorded a lot of jazz standards that they may not have had the publishing rights to release. Just a thought, I could be all wet here. Great video, thanks for posting. Of course, Ornette's Town Hall Concert was eventually released on ESP.
@jazzvinylcollector
@jazzvinylcollector Жыл бұрын
That's an interesting possibility for sure - they may have been attempting to secure rights to material, or realized after the fact that one of the compositions was really just a copy of something that was copyrighted
