Love your diy's thanks so much. I was a cleaning lady for years and have a couple of tricks, but you probably already know them 😉 but here they are if you don't. 1: I use pledge on all my stainless steel and hard plastic surfaces, keeps them clean, removes smudges and shines as well as prevents dust longer then without. 2: I fill a microwaveable bowl with water and 4 drops of dish detergent then microwave it for 5 minutes then just wipe away the grime inside. Note this does not work on convection microwaves. 3: I sprinkle baking soda on tubs and sinks even in the toilet then use a spray bottle filled with equal amounts of water to vinegar, this becomes a paste and works awesome with a sponge on tough jobs. Its similar to your diy but you dont have to worry about mixing on the spot. 4: I reuse my dryer sheets for dusting. They smell nice and still have enough cling to catch the dust. I even tried it on my swifter and viola I dust my floors. I just keep a small bag next to the dryer to toss them into it after a drying session. 5: I throw my used sponges into the dishwasher then reuse the ones I would have tossed for my bathroom and kitchen. 6: I soak my brushes and combs in water with 1/2 cup of ammonia and watch all the grime float away. Then thoroughly rinse. I use the chinese soup containers with lid for this and make sure to dispose of them when finished or rinse them thoroughly and keep a labeled container under my bathroom sink. Hope you can use my ideas. And thanks again. Jessica

I had a hard time removing grease from my kitchen (the fridge, oven, range, etc) I used vinegar with a few drops of dish soap...shake it well in a spray bottle. If the grease is deeply embedded I used steel wool and scrubbed it a bit; but not too much. Wipe with a cloth and my kitchen was bright white! After using that I would NEVER buy clorox spray again. The vinegar/dish soap mix is cheaper, way more effective and doesn't have a harsh smell nor am I using harsh chemicals.

Melissa, I love your channel! but just a comment: when you mix vinegar and baking soda, with or without water, the acetic acid (that’s what makes vinegar sour) reacts with sodium bicarbonate (a compound that’s in baking soda) to form carbonic acid. It’s really a double replacement reaction. Carbonic acid is unstable, and it immediately falls apart into carbon dioxide and water (it’s a decomposition reaction). The bubbles you see from the reaction come from the carbon dioxide escaping the solution that is left. What’s left is a dilute solution of sodium acetate in water. In fact, it’s almost all WATER. The sodium acetate (which is a salt) may offer a tiny bit of grease-removing ability, but it’s not much. Probably not enough to really notice. At all. So, really, all you’re doing, when you combine baking soda and vinegar to make a cleaning agent, is cleaning with very neutralized water with just a teensy, tinsy amount of salt in it. Hope it helps.

According to this NPR report, washing fruits and vegetables in water is sufficient so Melissa's formula is ok. Perhaps it is even recommended for those without clean water as the resulting H2O is as bacateria free as the vinegar. www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=14540742 I like the recipes from Clutterbug. For cleaning windows, I mix 2 cups water, 1/4 cup vinegar and 1/2 tsp dish detergent. Other than that, I use Clutterbug's recipes.

I always think this! wouldn't the alkaline baking soda and acidic vinegar just cancel each other out? it's basic chemistry!
@rcole6679
@rcole6679 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, it IS basic chemistry, but most of us have either forgotten or were never educated on ph balance scales, so the fizz makes us think we’re making a nasty eating cleaning solution, when we’re not doing so at all! What is the best natural products we can mix to create a tough cleaning solution? I guess we should be mixing bases with bases, acids with acids or just using one acid or one base alone, huh? Any suggestions?

I just used the cream cleaner one on my tub. Oh my gosh! What a difference! It's all shiny and clean and was super easy to do! The only parts that were strenuous to clean, were the parts that I had to kind of stretch awkwardly to reach. Besides that, it was really easy, did most of the work for me, and smelled absolutely delightful! I don't clean too often because I have really sensitive allergies and when I use store-bought chemical-based cleaners like lysol and clorox, by the time I'm done cleaning, I'm a sneezing, sniffling, puffy-eyed mess! Sometimes I can't even get the full job done before I have to call it quits, but with this cleaner, I had absolutely no issues! And because part of it's base is my regular dishwashing liquid, it smells wonderful! Really, thank you so much for posting this video! You've given me a new view on cleaning and now I know that I can clean more often without all the stress and allergies that used to keep me away from the sponge before!

These are great tips! Thanks! My favorite cleaner at home is not DIY but it is quite natural and old school and that is coconut laundry soap. It is hard to find and it comes in bars. It is great for any heavy duty work, such as greasy pans or stained white clothes. It works miracles and foams up really well. Something about the coconut oil makes everything whiter and shiner, without using any bleach. I learned this from my gradma who always used coconut soap to wash linens. After lathering them she left them in the sun for 15 min to boost up its power and then rinsed off. Perfect!

I use 2 cups baking soda, 1/4-1/2 cup vinegar and 1/2 tbs. dawn dish soap to form a paste. ( a few drops of essential oil can be added if you wish for smell) I use this paste in my cooled oven (electric) letting it sit for roughly 20-30 minutes. Gathering a bucket of warm water to rinse my sponge off as I clean. It works great for the slime grease build up inside the oven. But I will rinse throughout afterwards with some fresh warm water in a bucket and microfiber towel. That’s my personal method of getting inside the oven.

Its actually a homemade stain remover for clothes that works better than any store bought i have ever tried on even set stains, to any sealable container mix 50% baking soda, 40% dawn dish soap and 10% hydrogen peroxide. You will have to restir it everytime you use it but place that on seriously any stain for an hr then rinse it out and wash and the stain will be gone. Repeat if necessary depending on age of stain and severity but it even gets rid of those yellow sweat stains on white shirts.

I met a vendor at the state fair selling essential oils today. I told her about you, so if you hear from somebody selling oils, its her. I kept her business card, I lost the fliers she was giving me, I did keep track of her card. But I signed up for the newsletter. I bought orange scented oil. She said that it wasn't technically organic, but it had all the properties. She was very nice. She has workshops and everything. Is $5 (US) a good price for oils? She had lavender but not vanilla. I already have a lavender spray for my bed for sleeping. I had a lot of fun today. But I really liked this person.

Don't the baking soda and vinegar in the produce wash neutralize each other?

yes, it's a chemical reaction! The acetic acid (that’s what makes vinegar sour) reacts with sodium bicarbonate (a compound that’s in baking soda) to form carbonic acid. I like industrial strength (30%) vinegar that I buy on Amazon, mixed with water in a big spray bottle to clean my stove top. It removes every bit of grease/oil and I think it may also disinfect at the same time. Started using this mixture during my pregnancy as I developed an extra strong aversion to greasy/oily stove top (weird pregnancy symptom). Of course this vinegar and water mixture can be used on glass, greasy (stainless steel) pans, counter tops, but I like it the best for the stove top, and hood over the stove. Gets that nasty grease!

Just thought of another one that I really like. For hand soap in the kitchen I mix regular liquid hand soap with Dawn (although any dish detergent would work). I don't have an exact measurement or ratio for doing this though. I'd guess it's probably about 3 parts hand soap to 1 part Dawn. I like this mixture for hand washing in the kitchen because it cuts through the various gunk (oil, meat etc) that you get on your hands while cooking but it doesn't dry out your hands like straight dish detergent does.

I wished I'd seen this video earlier, I will definitely do the the glass cleaner, I have 4 pairs of glasses and their almost always smudged when I pick up a pair, same for my laptop's screen. As for my produce cleaner, I keep it simple: I use a drop of dish soap that I either add to a water bath for my grapes II swish them around then let them soak for a few minutes) or to scrub my yellows or reds. Of course I rinse thoroughly afterwards. One request: I'd like to see a cleaning schedule. I think I recall you saying that you are working on one but if not, that is my request, like daily, weekly, monthly etc. I'm still following the one from another cleaning guru but I'd like to see what yours is, if you actually have one.

Your channel name should be the super cleaning expert mary poppins or something! :) I love knowing that your channel and videos are here even if I dont have time to watch, because is like a cleaning guide that I can come back to when I need to. At the moment I am trying to see if the diy product recipes that I have written down on my box of cleaning products belongs to one of your videos, because I am sure it does but I didnt writte the recipes quantities in an understandable way...

I have watched a TON of your videos (because somehow youtube decided I needed to get serious about cleaning). Today is a holiday from work and, being inspired by you, I decided the ONE thing I was going to tackle was the bottom of my shower. I'm not kidding when I tell you I had just given up after trying EVERYTHING. Every commercial cleaner, every type of scrubber. Nothing took that grey grunge away. (Didn't realize that was my grunge. Thanks for enlightening me!) I was going to go with the dawn/vinegar method but I wanted to see what you used. Alas, you didn't use vinegar (yay, I'm down for not breathing that in if I don't have to!) Okay, I'm not going to say it's perfect. It's not. (Refer back to I'd given up.) If it stayed like this I'd be happy enough because I AM IN AWE of what dawn, baking soda, and a simple sponge has accomplished. The parts I'm not happy with I think I actually didn't scrub all that well. I think with a second application, I will be dancing in the shower! I am HOOKED! You now officially rock my world!

I am very skeptical of any combination of vinegar and baking soda. Unless you are looking for some quick foaming action, the resulting compound should be inert after the heat dissipates. Vinegar and baking soda each have unique cleaning properties, but the reaction destroys them. For glasses/electronics cleaning spray, I have been using 2 parts distilled water to 1 part rubbing alcohol with a single, tiny drop of all natural dish soap added. I believe the drop of dish soap adds just enough foaming action to the spray to make it work just like the store bought spray, and may help with removing grease/oil. Thanks for sharing the recipes, *****

Good idea Moe Bius ! I don't know - I have had good results with the vinegar and baking soda cleaning combo but the logic is certainly interesting.

***** Any liquid will have similar physical cleaning effects to water. Vinegar is an acid, while baking soda is alkaline. Combining the two causes a foaming reaction which cancels both and results in an inert compound. I welcome corrections from real chemists, of course. Thanks again for the nice tips.

Moe Bius I’m only a chemistry student, but here’s my guess: vinegar is usually pretty dilute, (~5%), so most often people add enough baking soda to neutralize all the vinegar, and have some baking soda leftover. So you’re not getting the cleaning properties of just water, but baking soda too, albeit less of it than if there were no vinegar.

HAVE BEEN USING ONE HALF RUBBING ALCOHOL WITH ONE HALF WATER WITH A SHOT OF PARSON'S AMONIA FOR MANY YEARS AND IT WORKS GREAT. I LIKE THE 90% ALCOHOL, DON'T KNOW IF IT IS REALLY ALOT BETTER, BUT MAKES ME FEEL GOOD. I OWNED A MOTEL FOR 15 YEARS AND IT WORKED GREAT ON WINDOWS, MIRRORS, TELEPHONES, DOOR KNOBS, AND COUNTERTOPS.

Instead of buying windshield washer fluid i do this. Get a one gallon jug like a clean empty milk jug and lable it. Fill about 3/4 full all 8oz of 91% isopropyl alcohol so it won't freeze in the winter. Then a big squart of dish washing liquid. I use Dawn. You can add a few drops of food coloring if you wish but it's not needed. Shake a little and then add to your car or truck windshield washer Reservoir. This is so much cheaper to make than buying the stuff from the auto parts store or Walmart. I think it works better too.

I think my favorite homemade cleaner is the one I make instead of buying Shout or other stain pre-treaters. It's really easy to make and if you use liquid laundry detergent you probably already have all three of the ingredients to make it. To make just mix 1 part water, 1 part hydrogen peroxide and 1 part liquid laundry detergent together in a spray bottle and gently swirl/shake to mix. I tend to give it a gentle shake before using it's not necessary though. To use spray the stain (I tend to be generous with it and thoroughly saturate the stain), work in (I use a dollar store electric toothbrush) and launder as normal. I haven't had a problem with it fading/bleaching the color of the stained area and it keeps well so I tend to make enough to fill the spray bottle. I don't know if it's safe for silk or if it could be used safely to treat now and wash later as some commercial stain removers can be.

Thank you, I will have to try the electronics/glasses cleaner. I wonder if you have any tips for keeping your bathroom mirror fog free? and I love your spot cleaner for carpeits! It saves my life as that I live in a small apartment with a 2 year-old whom likes to smear things into the carpet and have an 8 month-old whom is trying to craw for the fist times so it's important for me to keep them clean! Thanks again! I feel like a dork, I got all happy the moment that my phone told me that you had posted a new video! lol :)

My favorite homemade cleaner has to be the 50% vinegar and 50% dish detergent tub/tile cleaner/degreaser. I'm not sure how it works, but I put it on my faucets and within seconds they are shiny again. I'll have to try the bathroom scrub, I usually use the all purpose cleaner that you had on your last video to clean the bathroom, but that one I will have give it a try for the bathtub.
