I do like these exercise/drill videos, Malcolm. Some days I spend the entire day just repping a single run, trying to improve my technique (I’m just past beginner, doing my first blues, and trying not to get bad habits). 52 years old, and thanking you for teaching me how not to catch an edge :) Thanks!

@mankybrains9 ай бұрын
Bro, awesome you're still doing this. I'm 46 now and only recently decided to get into this sport. This will be my 2nd season. Like you, I spent a good amount of hours each day doing drills. And finally, finally I got to that moment. As Malcom mentioned in another video, the moment you feel that carve and your edge gripping, it's like magic. Even more crazy is taking your board and literally surfing down the run. A great feeling. For me, with the powder I'm just imagining like I'm surfing the waves back and forth while doing my s turns. Low and on the edge short and wide S turns. An amazing feeling and fun. Still doing drills for the goofy side so I can ride switch for even more fun. Helmet saved my life and the butt pads saved my tail bone. I fell twice from catching heel edge, falling backwards. Make sure the gear is quality. My tail bone suffered bruising the first time with some cheap padded shorts. I upgraded to a better one and the second time I fell hard, saved my butt despite it being bruised still. I dont know how old you feel, but stay safe and wear protective gear at all times.

Love drill videos. Been riding for 10 years but wasted so much time just aimlessly going down the mountain instead of actively trying to improve my technique. Last year I took my first steps towards becoming an instructor. It was basically the first time I had a teacher and they completely changed my perception and view on snowboarding. Been focusing much more on fixing bad habits and improving overall stance, switch riding, carving etc. I've always loved snowboarding but theses past trips have definitely been the most fun I've had on a board. I still catch myself going into tunnel vision and just speeding down slopes from time to time but I usually always have a goal while riding nowadays. Your videos help a lot! Keep up the good work :)

One thing that really helps when trying to clean up your carves is to listen. The more you skid your turns, the louder they will be. Try to make your turns as quiet as possible, while thinking about tilting your body over each edge like a metronome. As you transition between edges, pay attention to what you feel in your front boot. You should feel it press along the outside of your foot from pinky toe to heel as you change edges. If you ever feel the boot pressing against the inside of your front foot (your arch), you're likely leaning back towards the tail too much. Great video as always Malcolm!

dolphin turns are big, especially when you combine them with moguls (using the ollie in the trough to 'slap' the next mogul with the tail of your board, sending you up and over the bump rather than forward out of control). not great at it yet, but every one in three or so feels dope!

I started watching three seasons ago, before my first trip teaching my 10 year old to board and they have been invaluable. We are heading off to Cervinia in march (he’s 13 now) and we were really excited to see the Matterhorn in the background of one of your latest vids. Are there any exercises you think would be good for two boarders, watching each other and spotting each others problems for example. Or games to play that would help me help him move into switch riding. We are the two boarders in a large party of skiers and we like to get off on our own and find the steep stuff every now and then, that gives me good time to work on both our techniques. Keep up the good work. Alex

Hey Malcolm, can you do a video on which types of snowboards, high back angles and binding angles are best for carving at the beginner and intermediate levels? On your recent Relatable Riding video, there were a lot of comments discussing how carving is not relatable to them and I think some may not even have the right type of board or setup for that type of riding.
@elho0019 ай бұрын
Nope, you can learn to carve and carve a lot harder and better than most do on any proper (ie. no "catch free" "learn to ride" BS with zero edge hold) board and setup. You just have to bother to learn it, ideally with an instructor. The slow - "lazy" as Malcolm calls it - carving by slightly leaning to one or the other side we learned in the first week beginner course, the technique of up unweighted turns in the follow-up advanced courses third and fifth week - practice of actual riding made them better and better with the foundation of proper technique set. Most riders that you see on the mountain not properly carving just never got that foundation. Anything more - dedicated carving board or positive stance will help to then lay even deeper or have more fun turning tighter or wider radii. But that's all down the road.

Hey Malcolm loving your content! Thanks to you I identified that I'm stuck on skidded turns and in my attempt to progress further, I actually pick up some bad habits. Would love if you can make a step by step from upgrading from skidded turns to carved. Also in my country, ski pistes aren't as wide and empty, as the ones on your vids. Whenever I manage to get away for a few days of board, I'm forced to snowboard into huge traffic of people on not so wide terrain. I really feel I don't have the space to start trying carved turns, as some people in front of me are just learning and some "pros" for some reason fly on the edges with 100 km/h ... I always feel stressed and pressured and can't allow myself to gain some speed and try to feel out the board. Really not sure how to solve this, unless switching ski resorts.

Hi Malcolm, thx for another inspiring tutorial with exercises to start the new season about to begin! Well, even far away from dolphin turns, one thing I noticed on both videos covering them (short turn video in addition): it seems like you're checking landing area as you take your head down just before touching down front side. Or am I getting it wrong due to camera perspective or such? Usually you don't look what your board is doing and look in direction of travel. 😉

Another awesome video. Will you or have you made any videos on snowboard-specific fitness or strengthening exercises? My riding ability is pretty good but my thighs just buuuurrnnnnnnn so much towards the end of each day!! Is it as simple as spend more time riding or is there anything away from the slopes that could help?

Yeah I've had a bit of demand for this video so will have a think! Get squatting in the mean time 🦵🦵

@malcolmmoore - I incorporate squats to my toothbrushing routine (bear with me here!). 2 mins alternating 30 secs of bodyweight squats with 30 secs squat held in a static position, repeat twice, morning and evening. Yet still my flimsy thighs were giving up on me by the end of day 3 😁

We don't have a park at the moment, maybe later in the season though!
