Duck is what Ryan and Angry are praying. If I have to go for one stance for all, it is also definitely duck. If you are never riding switch, no tricks and more into racing, give posi posi a try. Beautiful riding. I also started back in the 90’s. At my mountain, these angles were standard advice for beginners, especially those who were transitioning from skiing. Experienced skiers were used to bending forward and pressuring the front of their skis to turn (not as necessary today with shaped skis). As they got better on their boards, riders would transition to duck if they wanted to skill up in the pipe and park (or what passed for a park back then). People who weren’t interesting in spinning through the air would stay posi-posi like this, or even go a little further to improve their carve. Since soft boots are relatively flexible side to side (great for duck), there are diminishing returns as you go further and further positive. For people who want to continue advancing their carving (and who aren’t named Ryan), the next step to amazing carving is moving to narrow boards, hard boots, and angles up in 60s. The feel of carving on those setups is absolutely unworldly. My current opinion is absolute beginners will have an easier time in duck until they master falling leaf. As soon as they have that I think they get a lot out of going posi-posi. The thing that is so rough on people transitioning out of falling leaf is repeatedly catching the downhill edge and getting slammed directly to knees or tailbone. With posi-posi, catching that edge is much more forgiving, usually throwing the rider sideways onto a hip, a much less brutal fall.

Incredible timing! I switched to posi posi today! I started with hard boots 30 years ago, posi posi, no errors allowed 😅. Quickly went with soft boots and after 10 years I switched to duck stance and stuck with it for the last 20 years. I bought a K2 Alchemist this winter and wanted to carve better with it. I tried duck stance at first but could not get rid of some skids with the back foot on the heel edge. So I turned back to posi posi 27 front and 6 back. Like said in your video, I automatically felt the need to lean forward when entering the turns and with this stance it helped a lot. Thank you for your top quality videos and tutorials!

Haha funny, my background is almost the same as yours down to the time frame (c.f. my main comment). 😀 While unfortunately not living there, I did learn in Switzerland, which you given your nickname, I assume you probably did as well. I guess I managed to stick to initiating my turns weight on the front foot more when riding duck, so reviving posi posi, it was not feeling the need to lean forward, but the ease to do so more when carving steeper (EU) reds.

Great video Malcolm. You hit the nail on the head at approximately 11:20. I too don't like to or want to always be tweaking my board set up and searching for something that is suitable for the majority of conditions. For example on my last trip to Colorado and knowing we weren't going to get any fresh snow and conditions would be more hard packed and firm, I actually switched my back foot slightly positive while keeping my front at +18. I rode like that all day, but when things got tracked out or I hit much steeper bumpy terrain, I didn't care of the stance. The next day went back to 0 on back foot and felt much more control and rode better in those conditions. The last day got some deeper powder and didn't want to the deeper carving, so kept my traditional set up. I do love to carve and keep trying to improve technique with less heel edge skidding, but it's also a little more challenging with a volume shifted directional board with set back binding positions. Great video. Thank you

I'm super comfortable carving and doing short radius / gripped turns on nice groomed or hard packed snow. Thanks for this one Malcolm. I really enjoy Lars' channel. I like his attitude and way of looking at things and he has a good way of explaining things. Good to see you doing this session/video with him and good on you for giving it a go. I think the biggest take away from this is that stance makes a difference. If you want to ride everything then your board (no matter what board you choose) is going to be a compromise for some element of your ride, and stance is the same. If you are going to be very specialist then you can pick your board and stance to maximise your setup. Understanding the differences between different stances (and board designs) makes you a better rider. I now have two boards; a directional board which I usually ride +21/+6 and a symmetrical twin which I ride +15/-15. Neither setup is right or wrong, just better for doing certain things and I therefore focus more on different riding styles/terrain on each. I enjoy and learn from your videos. Thanks. 🙂

I ride about25 25to 35 35 on twins and 50 and 55 and 55 60 on my alpine boards. I ride all of my boards with hard boots and plate bindings. I've found that a really good balance is to run a classic "Freeride" stance with your back foot at +3 to -3 and your front foot at +16 to +20 depending on the board and terrain. You can still really drive your knee and weight into a carve, but it still gives you enough "ankle steer" on the back foot for icy/chundery terrain
@fmotrichp9 ай бұрын
That works well if you have small feet but another advantage of going past +/- 9 is that it also starts to reduces your foot print. I only wear size 11 and couldn't carve with my back foot at 0 without going for a 270+ board and options are starting to get limited (and expensive) there. Back foot at +9 I'm kinda fine on my 265, still drags a bit when leaning deep though.
@jonbrown94909 ай бұрын
@fmotrichp I actually run an 11.5 and a Ride Mtn Pig 160w with no toe/heel drag issues. Could be a difference in boots and terrain though. I suppose if the board was going totally vertical I might boot out on a heelside turn, but the chances of that are super low. I definitely agree that a steeper angle on your bindings will help squeeze your foot onto a narrower board.

Great discussion near the end. Last season I tried a number of days full posi. Yeah it's definitely great on groomers when you're laying the board up on edge, particularly heel side. That being said I struggled in tree runs and rutted out terrain more than duck. So I ended up sticking with directional duck (similar to you 18, -9). I feel like it's the best in between for most days. I think everyone should try full posi for a day though, it really gives you an understanding of body mechanics for carving. And you can retain some of that going back to duck or directional duck

You get used to riding the whole mountain posi posi. My pure carving stance is +30/+15 though +9 and my all mountain stance is +21/+6 the back foot being so close to 0 makes it really easy to navigate steeps, trees, and moguls and you still have that +21 front angle to really allow your hips to be open on that heel side. Riding switch is kinda weird though, you either look like a skier looking behind you or you twerk your knees the other way...

Awesome to see some more of Lars riding and both of you carving hard! 👍 I feel slightly different on the game changer/totally different experience/getting used to and awkward on difficult errain parts. Maybe because like Lars I learned on posi posi angles (actually insane angles in the 30 to 45 degree range both feet) learning both carving and basic ground tricks including to ride switch that way, only moving to a (non-symmetric +12 -9) duck more than 15 years into riding when duck became a thing. Duck made switch more convenient ,but was not a game changer either, it was not as if my switch game made a huge jump due to it. This season, along with getting the Jones Freecarvers I went to posi posi (+24 +9) on them after more than 10 years of duck only. Yes it helps especially on the heel carve, opening up the hip while maintaining edge hold, but the stance was more suxtle a change to me than between dedicated carving board and say freestyle board (and that difference is not like one could not learn and do say 70-80% of one's carving on without problems) . Also I got used to it again within few runs (having some skid outs like Malcom helping me remind to adapt a bit more) and switching to my freestyle board setup duck and back within a day was not too weird either. Also I explored all opened parts of Verbier/Quattre Vallees and Les Arcs/La Plagne with them, including Tortin in Verbier (second run at all on the 9000S actually) and the Rochu in La Plagne to name those with the steepest mogul parts in the same league as the Tunnel in Alpe d'Huez. I did clearly feel the extra effort to put in with a longish strong camber board, but did not feel awkward in any way. Oh and both Malcolm and Lars are hands down better riders than me. That is why I feel the drawbacks were slightly overstated. Maybe it is that given how I was taught back in the days, I even in my skidded turns rely more on unweighting and weight shifting than torsional twist so much.🤷

I hear ya! I think you're right about your background. And it is also a matter of how steep the angles really are. I'm happy all over the mountain in all conditions at 27/+9 or 27/+6. As I said in the video, when I 'over do it' (because the board width forces me to go 36/+18 or so) I notice the difficulties in bumpy slow speed sliding turn terrain. There is surely an aspect of getting used to it in this. And you obviously don't have to worry about that. 🙂

Very interesting to hear your take on posi posi, I started this year at +27 +12 but found I was getting to must strain on my front knee. Have now dropped to +24 +9 my carving has improved greatly, I don't do a lot of switch but can still do it. The only down side for me is calf strain, but that might be an age thing😂

Picked up Korua shapes dart for the the Northern hemisphere season in Japan (I am Australian) which I’ve just wrapped up after 6 epic weeks. Inspired by the Nicolas Wolken vid on their website I decided to give posi posi a go…I’m at 27/21 or 27/18 and I’ve gotta say it’s changed the way I’m able to carve…Might be a placebo affect but who cares….it feels so natural and and my confidence has improved out of sight…Never going duck again…great video 👍

I have been riding the same stance since the early 1990's as well. I never been a big trick guy but have done hundreds of days riding big mountain back country. I also rode a 168 fat board for decades and am only 5'10" and 170lbs. Stance all the way back. Super stable and fast in deep deep steep powder.

Hi Malcolm Great video, as always. You mention moguls at one point in the video, and how these are better tackled with a conventional stance. Have you made a video yet on the technique needed to master moguls. I've just come back from a trip where they were impossible to avoid and I certainly found them challenging. Any tips would be gratefully received...

I typically ride very aggressively in a tucked stance (for speed) with bindings at +18/0. Have found the neutral position in the back to be great but want to try out a slight positive in the back foot. Great explanation in the vid and good to know that neutral back foot likely helps a lot on ungroomed or messier trails and will keep that in mind.

Started snowboarding in the 90s where posi posi was the standard way to learn. Duck was really something for those wild freestylers. I really enjoyed the feeling of carving when I picked it up, but turned to duck to join the cool kids vibe. Over the last few years ingot a bit bored riding duck and really looked for something new in my snowboarding, longing for that carve feeling. Picked up a jones freecarver and going posi posi this year!

So awesome! Two of my favorite snowboard youtubers in one video?! I've been playing with posi posi since last year, due in large part to folks like Lars. So cool to see even someone super experienced like Malcolm having fun playing with the angles. How's the Biru?

Ha, that looked excellent for a first go! I have been riding +24/+9 for a couple of years, and always revisit your carving vids at the start of a trip, carefully revising the do's and don'ts. Somehow it didn't cross my mind that your tips would not necessarily apply for double posi riders! Now I need to figure out what the key differences are as I prep to ride in Japan. Key takeaway for now is that I should try breaking at the waist to lean downslope when it gets steep 😅

Very nice! Thanks for taking the time to talk about the tradeoff with a posi-posi stance. That really helped me think about if I'm ready to try this, and if my typical snow conditions would support this. (No, and no :) )
@sth1dtitan6769 ай бұрын
Moguls and steeps can be done with posi/posi angles just as well. Similarly to carving, the technique is different, but you can make gripped turns just like you can with duck stance. Try pushing your back knee forwards and then knee steering with your front knee. (Been riding 30/18 or 27/15 angles for 25 years, from trees and steeps to mirror smooth groomers)

Really recommend mellower angles to get the best of both worlds. I typically use +18/+3 and this allows me to carve much easier (than duck) while still sending jumps and straight lining with confidence.

Great video! When I started boarding in '98 with posi posi stance. Moved to duck a few years later. Might go back and test it again. There is a reason the do posi posi on hardboots anyway.

Great , i 'm very waiting this episode. I' started duck stance for some years , but when i felt carving centrifugal feeling , searched the better techniques. My first preference the carving specific boards and gears. Bought Driver X boots and some higher flex bindings. (Flux XV, CV etc) About for years ago testing posy /posy stance , the first time was very uncomfortable. Testing some higher angles but now i think , i dont need higher +15 backfoot and +30 front foot. This is very good for carving, and not so much uncomfortable. Morning ride with Amplid Pentaquark posy /posy satnce , afternoon little twin DC 152 freestyle board with duck stance. :D Now i feel little more uncomfortable the duck stance . ;)

I have tried this while predominately riding powder although I was nowhere near as fluid as you guys! Your boards are a bit wider than what I had and size 11 boots were catching toes so couldn't do it on the piste. Great video, must give it a try when I next get a change to hit the slopes 🥹 Les Deux Alpes was the last place we went too - it was quite icy by the end of our week!
@bsmaven9 ай бұрын
You didn't discuss stance width. After watching Lars video i narrowed my stance which should help with a positive stance and forward and back movements in turns. That took more getting used to them leaving duck stance but I think it works. I probably was using too wide a stance to begin with anyway. I also took Lars advice about changing gradually and using 0 back foot angle for now.
@penandcandle9 ай бұрын
This is beautiful! I'm an intermediate rider but feel like doing is already. Also, think the feet position would suit me better since I come from longboarding and surfskating, and the back foot always feels weird at the duck stance when snowboarding.

Duck stance FTW. Sometimes going through moguls is required and being able to ride half the mogul field switch is way easier on your knees. Riding a super wide board like a knapton twin eliminates the toe/heel clearance issues that used to mandate a posi posi stance for carving well.

Brilliant collaboration! I've been trying to mimic this style for the last 3 seasons now. On the toeside I can get pretty low and drag forearms but I am doing something wrong on my heelsides, I can't even scrape the tips of my fingers. I watched all the videos about rotating your body, I am riding posi posi but when I try to rotate my upper body during heelside, my back leg is coming around and I wash out and end up on my bum. It's so frustrating. Should I work on my upper body rotation "stretching"? When I watch videos of myself I don't seem to be able to get my bum over the heel edge and my position looks like I am sitting on an immaginary chair. Given the informations can you give some blind tips or advices? Thank you for the great content you produce ✌

I learned duck foot and rode soft boots so I could teach. But switched to my hardboots as soon as classes were done. Been riding hard boots since '92 - that's all they had at the rental shop in 1992. With the years of practice, I go everywhere on the mountain - even done the half pipe back in the day. Ice is the only condition I don't like to ride in my hardboots (probably don't like it in soft boots either.)

Awesome video! I've started snowboarding many years ago in posi posi stance. Now I'm learning how do ride duck stance, and it's really hard to re-learn. I would recommend newbies to master the duck stance first, before going positive.
@elho0019 ай бұрын
Really?! Totally not my experience. I learned on and rode for over 15 years extreme posi posi, ie. more than 30 degrees on both feet and - to make things worse - more on the back foot. Changing to duck at +12 - 9 took me an afternoon in an indoor ski dome before that seasons vacation. Took some intermediate angles that I went through, each being a step that would feel weird, but did not prevent my technique to work. Whenever, after several runs, it would feel less weird and I felt like I could ride that way, I went another step towards duck. I did not manage to ride like I was used to at fully symmetric duck like +12 -12, so I stuck to the +12 -9. Is it maybe something like that what you are facing?

Posi Posi was a game changer for me this season. I Like to drift so easy and to carve the red and black ones in the alps. Its much more easier fort me to handle the board without pain in the back leg in Duckstance. And yes it's true you lean much more forward and can keep a good push to fet into the carving feeling.
@sebastianmetz9 ай бұрын
Haha so funny, 23 years ago I learned to snowboard posi-posi and it revolutionized riding switching to duck stance because of it‘s versatility. Now it comes back with people learning double positive for the first time 😄 But yes, I remember the loss of force that comes with your back foot pointing backwards vividly and how much more challenging riding at higher speeds became with duck stance.

Especially the heel side turn looks to be improved drastically, cause in duck you simply can’t angle your board far enough. The moment a slope is a bit more steep, no matter what I try there is always some skidding on my heel turn, while the toe turn is a nice pencil line.

Malcolm as a snowboarders crossing over from beginner to intermediate i have the feeling your videos helped me a lot with my stance. But somehow it fails me on the slanted slope when my head is towards the high side and i want to turn to my heel side. I either fall backwards or nothing happens at all. I was hoping you to have some tips for the slanted slope. I hope you understand the question, one of my more experienced friends didnt see why it would be an extra challenge.
