The ADHD thing is really, really weird. I had all those issues before I started, and they were helped immensely by my ADHD meds. They saved my marriage, my job, everything. Oddly, weed caused me so many memory issues I had to stop smoking it.
@ems76232 жыл бұрын
Sadly, cannabis done to excess can have effects on memory. I would like to do it less, but I still have this undercurrent of anxiety running through my ADHD and it helps with that. Personally, I find Adam's account of his experience with ADHD meds to be ... a little unusual. I don't want to invalidate his experiences, but when he talks about the negative effects he experienced on stimulants, he seems to often list SYMPTOMS of ADHD. It reminds me very much of the countless ADHD patients who become aware of their symptoms in full for the first time because the meds provide them with the first time they experience anything different. Mixing them with other substances can also be a confusing experience.

I can definitely attest to social media being a drug. Growing up, I was never exactly popular. At the start of the pandemic, I started joining some online communities and making friends. I had posted some selfies and received some praise and validation for them, which would result in a dopamine spike. So I kept on doing it. As the attention wore off, I wanted it to continue. It left me wanting more. So I started making my pics a little more suggestive, which got me some attention and compliments. I started posting thirst traps, which would result in even more attention. It got to the point where I was almost addicted to the attention. I’d post, get a massive dopamine spike for a short period of time, when the attention wore off, I’d crash. It stopped being about posting for fun, and became about desperately trying to get as much attention as possible from these strangers as I could. I was validating my worth, through what others said about my appearance, just for the dopamine. I was finally getting the attention I craved, but with a crash

I would have said the same thing several years ago. I truly believed I was broken beyond repair, even worse still, that I was just made that way, defective, and then broken on top of it all. If you read or listen to Gabor Mate explains very well how childhood traumas and events can play a fundamental role in many if not most of the issues that we deal with every day as adults, with trauma on top ot trauma, mostly we don't actually know the issues that really lie underneath the layers of issues and developmental disruptions, and more often than not, the things we would have in mind as the most damaging or changing events in our lives and upbringing are usually after the fact events that happened because of some damage already done that set us up for a bigger fall down the line. Of course we remember the fall but maybe not the initial point of origin. He states that working for years with addicted individuals in the Downtown Vancouver he learned that most if not all of the patients were victims of some form of serious childhood abuse/neglect. Basically these people were addicts waiting to become addicted in a sense, just like you said, you always feel like an addict, and I can relate, as the problem existed before the drugs, the drugs came because of the issues, not the other way around. The drugs are generally a self medication for deep seated issues that we don't know how to or can't manage. Something that I did several years ago changed my life completely, I was in terrible health, my mental and emotional pain was causing me so much distress that my sleep, my diet, everything was suffering, and the anxiety and stress hormones were literally wearing me out. I was suffering immensely, more than I even realised, no matter how hard I tried to be healthy, no matter what I did nothing seemed to help, and so I had to just "get on with it". A friend of mine contacted me one day telling me of something he had done in the Netherlands, and "I had to do it" and something about the way he said it, just struck me right in the heart and soul. He had travelled to the Netherlands to partake in an iboga ceremony, which is the root of an African shrub, historically taken in extremely large doses by all tribe members when they come of age (around 14 or so) it is the "coming of age" or "rite of passage" ceremony, to symbolise becoming your own person, and adult respected as such by the other tribal members. The whole tribe gets together and sings and dances all night and everyone takes a small amount while the ones who are coming of age take a whole plate full of the extremely bitter wooden shavings. When you take it you generally purge, and vomit for a minute or two until you are empty, then lay down for several hours and don't really move a lot for the night at all. You then begin to journey into your mind, as if there was a screen behing your eyes when you close them and it will take you through the things in your life that you need to go back to to figure out and to kind of unstick them. You feel an unimaginable sense of emotional release and you come out the other side very tired, but lighter as if you just took the world off your shoulders. I was a long time awake from the experience and when I eventually got some rest I woke up like a new person. I will say this you really don't know how sick you are until you get better. My mind felt clear, along with my eyesight and all my senses were amped up, in fact they were working perfectly, everything was, and I felt half my age. It took a while to get used to having such a clear head, I never realised how much fog and chatter was in my mind until it cleared. Not that I could hear it audibly, but it was there. I still have that clarity to this day, and that was about 5-6 years ago now. It was the best thing I ever done for myself, for my health, and for my mental/emotional state. I have found iboga to be the most healing substance I ever came across, and I have heard that ayahuasca is also a healing plant along with DMT, Kambo, and other entheogens/psychedelics, . That's great that you are sober, and that can't be an easy feat when you still feel that way to this day, it's a real testament to your character and I hope you manage to work things out so that you can finally have the happiness and peace of mind that you deserve. I really wish you the best in health and happiness, in body, spirit and in mind
@Daywalkerbmz1188 Жыл бұрын
@@aodhokelly8811 iv done some reading on iboga and ayahuasca before and I belive it can work for some people like me especially. I have experimented with mushrooms quite a bit in the past and always found they had something to teach. They helped a lot with a very deep-seated restlessness and hypervigilance in the short term. Just made it disappear and I would be at peace. I took away that Psycadelics can definetly treat trauma if used correctly. I was diagnosed bipolar 1 with general/social anxiety while being treated for alcoholism by a psychiatrist, and by another psychiatrist outside facility shortly after. It was a long time comeing since I had my first psychotic break 13 years ago in the farm of a manic episode. Mania is a amazing state to be in but also very unpredictable and possible dangerous. Take the best mood you have ever been in and triple it. The euphoria and sheer awe struck nature of it eventually drives one to insanity. Its a very jung esk sort of experience of archetypes and feeling as if one has been "chosen" for some sort of divine mission. Unfortunately or fortunately it only happened once lasting 2 weeks. The other half is crippling depression that waxes and wanes. So the question is how dangerous is it for someone that is prone to altered states naturally to partake in a ceremony of what is basically induced short term psychosis (iboga, ayahuasca, mushrooms)? Its a question I ask myself quite a bit, Haveing seen both sides and come back (mostly) intact. Iv left more than a few bits of my mind scattered on the trail behind me haha. Often times I do think it would be beneficial to take a break from the meds and have a ceremony again.

I've had a vastly different relationship with my ADD meds. Memory-wise, I was/am a goldfish without them. They don't give me any kind of addictive rush. They feel like they sober me up and let me pull my head out of the chaotic fog within my own mind. I have never, ever abused them in over 40 years time and I never feel like they've damaged my cardiovascular fitness or health. They let my mind slow down enough that I'm able to exert control over the executive functions within. They don't act like speed does when used by neurotypical people. They literally act like the opposite of that for me. They slow me down to where I can take control. Your experience, as described seems like it GAVE you ADD brain rather than removing it. That being said, I question why you, or any of the medical practicioners who prescribed it to you didn't discontinue it's use for you long ago if it was having the effect you're describing. Because frankly, it's not supposed to do that if you actually have ADD/ADHD.

For me, having ADHD I have tried almost every ADHD drug in high school. Vyvanse, Concerta, Ritalin and some others. At low doses I never noticed much of a difference but at higher doses I would see some CRAZY changes: 1. In the start and middle of the day I would go into a creative, productive frenzy. My brain would be very fast moving as always but suddenly I found myself randomly cleaning and writing pages and pages of notes for school. I was able to achieve so much in a day it honestly shocked me. 2. At the end of the day however, I would CRASH. And I mean CRASH. I'd start getting very depressed for no good reason, crying and feeling overall shit. I couldn't sleep well when I took them either. This is why I stopped taking them.

Any suggestions on how to slowly stop?
@christianmcbrearty Жыл бұрын
@@junktin1750 Of course! I would say try for a week or at least a few days off it and see if your marks decline. But ultimately, your health is a lot more important than studies (despite what people want you to believe). It is better to be alive with no degree than sick, depressed or even dead with one 😂 I think the issue in your case is simply your depedency on the drug to function. I totally get it, because I have the same thing haha but its about weighing up how much it affects you healthwise, as well as your life. If I were you bro, I would speak to my doctor about maybe lowering the dosage gradually before even considering cutting it off. But from my experience, I can't say I was ever "addicted" to the drugs per se, more just found them helpful but at a cost. Ultimately, just weigh up whether you feel like Vyvance is helping you or not and if the answer is no, try either lowering the dose, quitting completely for a while to see how you operate without them or trying a new ADHD medication like ritalin/concerta etc. Hope this helps and I can absolutely answer any other questions you have from my personal experiences too. I'm 22 and have been off them for a few years but am considering getting back on them for work and uni :)

This is such an informative video. Thank you! Dopamine is wild. Throughout the past few years i've been stumbling through life trying to find a sense of direction but getting distracted with short term dopamine rushes. Things like drugs and videogames have been distracting me from actually bettering myself. About four months ago I started telling myself "learn to enjoy doing hard things," and have been pushing myself to learn how to program. I enrolled in the hardest class i've ever taken and came out the other side a full stack software engineer. I still smoke weed and I still play videogames, but I get much more enjoyment coding. It's kind of the same thing. I still get short term dopamine releases, and I'm definitely addicted to them, but now they're connected to something tangible and productive. Though I don't yet have a job, I now have a marketable skill that pays well and makes me feel good about what I'm doing. I finally have a sense of direction and it feels amazing. There's a lot to be said for playing the long game, but for some of us there's quite a steep learning curve in figuring out how to do so.

Fuck I am having exactly same issues, I take Vyvanse and I think this video finally made me realize just the toll it's had on me. I rely on it for schoolwork but to point where I know NEED it for school. I need help getting off this shit. do you have any advice to stop taking this and quit relying on it by chance?
@coryt93 Жыл бұрын
@@junktin1750 hey, I’ve ever took vyvanse just adderall, but before coming off it, I recommend first lowering the dose and see if that helps. If you tried that and still want to get off it, look for another substitute. There’s info online or talk to a psychiatrist. For me, caffeine’s helped me been off addy for a month now. Good luck.

This is so relatable. I find myself reflecting on how THIS is the future and how wild it is when you really think about everything as a whole. It's difficult to find other people to discuss these thoughts & feelings with bc I tend to feel alienated when I try to bring it up. Maybe it's bc it's an uncomfortable topic for some, but it needs to be addressed or it'll never change. Tysm for thissss. 🖤 You're just wholesome and we appreciate you.

I've definitely had bouts where I was dependant on kratom, but after facing my own personal depression and anxiety head-on, I naturally became less dependant on kratom to the point where I'd forget to take my daily kratom dose. I went from about 12g a day to one 3 gram dose every other day or so. Now instead of trying to fix my mood, I use it purely for recreation to feel good and stimulated for homework, skateboarding, going out, etc. Then again I'm also someone who would not withdraw when i took a break from kratom, but I know many people get powerful withdrawal symptoms when quitting it. I used to work in a kratom shop so I've seen the VERY vast range of how it can affect individuals

What he says about the Kratom is so true. I’ve been taking liquid concentrate shots 2-3 times a day for the past 3-4 years and the anxiety I get before I take it is insane then it all goes away when I dose. Then an hour or 2 after I’m anxious asf. It’s a cycle that’s driving me insane tbh. And I don’t even want to think about the money I’ve spent. $20 a dose 2-3 times a day. It’s sick.

liquid concentrate shots wtf didn't even know that existed, jesus fk I took kratom for like 2 weeks due to probation, and it was alright the first like week then after that I would have some weird ass withdrawals, I would get mad at literally anything. If someone was breathing near me I got mad. I threw that shit in the garbage. Glad I never got on that shit badly.

Yeah, I hear ya. I don’t like the powder or pills. I sometimes take the concentrate shots to go to sleep. They’re pretty powerful. Each one costs $20, and I take 3. So I don’t take them often

I started smoking again when I started a stressful job 4-6 months ago. I found it so anxiety-inducing for me to even walk into work (for a plethora of reasons). I would have a cigarette before work to calm myself down, and it worked. But I think I find going into work anxiety inducing (mostly) because I KNOW I will have a cigarette. You just enlightened a little curious part of my brain

It was so interesting hearing you talk about your adhd medication because that feeling of not knowing where I put things or constant lapses in memory is actually just a result of my adhd, and my medication (I’m on concerta) actually helps with it quite a lot. Consider trying loperamide (Imodium) 4x 2mg a day and watch your digestion, get some psyllium husk if you start to get constipated. Even though loperamide is not psychoactive, people have successfully used it to wean themselves off potent opiates/opioids, even heroin. Definitely worth doing some research and maybe giving it a try

Just a little correction. Mitragyna speciosa actually is the scientific name of the kratom plant not the name of its main active alcaloids. Those would be mitragynine and 7-HO-mitragynine. (pls correct me, if I got the English spelling wrong)
