I love Opuntia. I have 3 plants in my garden in the middle of Germany. Last winter we had -21°C an they are still alive.

Further sorting of sedum: Petrosedum - The "reflexum" kinds, and others that have pine-needle like leaves Hylotelephium - Die back every year, most are grown in outdoor gardens as a perrenial, rarely as a groundcover Phedimus - Scalloped leaves, some die back and are used as groundcover
@annieschreck79383 жыл бұрын
YES! Fantastic summary of the new Sedum genera! As a bit of a "splitter" myself, I hope these names become common enough that we in the nursery trade can start using them as the primary name on listings. Sort of a chicken and egg problem though. And who knows, maybe we'll get tender Sedum and frost hardy stonecrops split one day too :D
@sedumzz32893 жыл бұрын
@@annieschreck7938 Yes I hope so too!! This way people won't get confused if their sedum is hardy or not! It would be kind of weird though, considering some Phedimus isn't as hardy and others are super hardy..

Thank you for the videos, you are always so informative and your enthusiasm is infectious! I have so many questions about planting succulents outside, but the main ones are whether I need to replace all the soil or just mix gritty succulent soil with it (I'm in zone 6a, typical Midwest dirt here!) and how deeply do I need to do that? If I have a weed barrier down, would that inhibit semps and sedum from spreading?
@annieschreck79383 жыл бұрын
Thank you and such great questions! I'm ashamed to say I'm not familiar with Midwest soil, but assuming it's not clay you can likely use it as-is, just mounded into berms. If it is a heavy, poorly-draining soil, you'll need to add at least 50% mineral grit by volume, mixed to a depth of about 6". I'd also recommend ensuring you have 6" or more of soil on top of the weed barrier to ensure rapid drainage and prevent rot. Succulents' soil needs are much more flexible in-ground than in a pot, but you can find a lot more succulent soil info in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m37adqSlp9Stbq8

Are these outdoor succulents able to be grown in Canada?
@Mountaincrestgardens Жыл бұрын
Some can, depending on where you live! You can find your hardiness zone here and only plant varieties hardy to your zone or lower: planthardiness.gc.ca/?m=1

I live in zone 10 currently moving to zone 9, not a huge difference but 9 can get a little snow. Zone was the first thing I checked when deciding where to move, then I looked at crime rates, lol I am looking at my plants differently now, how do I change their care. Who needs to stay in pots to be pulled into a green house or indoors in winter and who will thrive outside year round, who will still love summer, who could now go outside?
@Mountaincrestgardens3 жыл бұрын
First, I'd strongly recommend talking to other people growing succulents in your area, as they'll know your new growing conditions and seasonal weather patterns better than I. That said, in my experience the soft/tender succulents that can handle light, brief frost when they're dry are things like Jade Plants (Crassula ovata), some Agave, Aloe juvenna, Aloe nobilis, and Echeveria agavoides. Then there's the whole world of frost-hardy succulents like Sempervivum (Hens & Chicks) and some Sedum. Keeping plants close to a building and/or covering them with a sheet can also be the minor difference that protects a succulent from frost damage. Here are the varieties I'd recommend for Zone 9: mountaincrestgardens.com/explore-all/?_bc_fsnf=1&Cold+Hardiness%5B%5D=Zone+9+%2820F%29&Cold+Hardiness%5B%5D=Zone+8+%2810F%29&Cold+Hardiness%5B%5D=Zone+7+%280F%29&Cold+Hardiness%5B%5D=Zone+6+%28-10F%29&sort=alphaasc And I welcome input from anyone reading this who has experience with Zone 9 succulent growing! All the best, Annie

The woolly, arachnoideum types tend to produce heaps of offsets and develop into nice colonies. Here's a link to all the Hens & Chicks that produce lots of chicks each year: mountaincrestgardens.com/sempervivum-hens-chicks/?_bc_fsnf=1&Special+Characteristic=Lots+of+Offsets&sort=bestselling&page=1

What is coarse sand ? I could only find play sand .
@Mountaincrestgardens2 жыл бұрын
Coarse refers to the size of the grit. Play sand is a bit fine (small grit) for succulent soil. You'd be better off with a coarse builder's or paving sand, if you can find it.

@annieschreck79383 жыл бұрын
Rainbow Cactus (Echinocereus rigidissimus ssp. rubispinus) can tolerate short, light frosts but we don't consider it one of the truly frost hardy cacti. But in zone 9+ you could grow it outdoors!
