Whomever said SUCCULENTS are easy, low maintenance, grow ....are liers! They're finicky, dramatic and delicate stubborn little monsters ! They get your hopes up and betray you by rotting and dying. They're cute thought💚🌵🪴

I made the mistake for a long time of using rocks in the bottoms on my plant pots. I realized that a lot of my plants died of root rot because the rocks hold the moisture in and push it up towards the roots. I took all rocks out of the bottoms of all my plant pots and re potted them all and I never lost a plant to root rot again. I know alot of people make this mistake but I never read or see any videos talking about it. Your video is awesome by the way!

The first thing I learned was the old nurseryman's trick of crocking actually reduces drainage, that was like 10 years ago. Now I have every color except green in my succulent collection and have cactus from the Atacama Desert where rain hasn't fallen for 400 years or something like that. But I just lost a whole bunch of rare Echeverias this season thinking they wouldn't go dormant under my lights. So annoyed! I had this pure white one, you can't even see anything like it on the internet. So annoyed!

We must think the rocks create air space and the opportunity to drain. Apparently thy don’t. I’ve never tried it but see why we would consider it. Seems logical. Kinda like getting under an overpass during a tornado?

In my experience with succulents it’s better to underwater them than over water them because you can save a succulent if it’s dryed out but if it has rot root it’s almost impossible to save it and also if you get rot on the main stem of the plant it’s even harder.

Thank you Ashley. I have always enjoyed succulents and cacti because they seemed to be hard to kill. But your advice has let me know that I'm assuming too much about watering and sunlight with these. I moved from a very low sunlight place to a very sunny apartment and put all my plants on the window sill beliving they all craved tons of sunlight. Within a week or two my jade plant's leaves looked purplish. I never saw that before so I thought oh that's a good sign. Then I learned this was not normal and that the purplish color meant too much sun was burning the leaves! Other perplexing experiences with my plants not flowering, not growing or looking wrinkly, or falling out of the pot because the roots didn't reach down into the soil have given me numerous lessons in the proper care of succulents. What you say about paying closer attention to plants' changes and responses to conditions that under my control..... that's a bonfide revelation. The best advice in general about keeping and caring for plants is what you say about paying attention. After moving to this much sunnier apartment I began adding more succulents to my collection. As my collection has grown I get more involved with noticing when they are in a resting period vs a growth period. And just knowing what they need or dont' need from me when they are growing or resting....it was quite a wakeup experience. As you said there's a lot you can't just leave on autopilot. The takeaway for me is that plants have their own lifecycles and conditions they need so if I insist on them converting themselves to the conditions I want them to follow, they could be suffering, and not do so well.

If you want to grow succulents I suggest that you buy some clay pots. Many people use terracotta clay but any clay that is not glazed will do. Some people use cement which is fine but I prefer clay. Clay will help draw the water away from the roots so that they will not rot. Most commercial succulent and cacti soils that I have tried do not have enough substrate in them. I usually add pumice to a commercial succulent soil until I get the consistency that I feel comfortable with. I also add some worm castings. I have not tried the Repotme succulent soil yet but I did buy a bag of one of their orchid soil mixtures (I am new to orchids) and my orchid is loving it and doing very well. I have bought quite a few grow lights from Amazon and have found that every type of plant that I have added a grow light to is doing very well. All my grow lights are LEDs so they have not effected our electric bill.

NOPE, I’m the complete opposite! During Covid my go to plant was succulents ONLY! I found that they thrived better and from experience I knew I didn’t have a green thumb. So, I stayed away from houseplants for 20 years! 😅 All my succulents thrived so well, till this past winter when we had a cold snap and I just left them out and they pretty much all died. I thought they were going to make it since I left them out the previous winter, but I guess the cold just lasted a little too long and it was colder. I’m starting to rebuild my collection again. Only difference is this time I’ve managed to add bout 100 house plants to my collection since 2021! 😄 I’ve learned a lot about plants from watching you & Nick. 🥰

Thanks Ashley. I bought some succulents in those small black plastic pots and had to soak in a bowl of water to get the soil to retain the moisture. No wonder the plants were on clearance! I have them inside with grow lights. I dont know. I tried to propagate from what i had to take iff bit i worry about pest treatment cause i read not to touch them or wipe off the powder. I am worried i will kill them all. I live in a hot humid area but in winter it is too cold most of the time for them outside and we get tons of rain. So, house plants. I dont know if the grow lights help them. If they all die, i will give up. I tried

Two have been producing more and more blooms every year! Sounds heartless but my method of pest control for all of my houseplants has been: As soon as you notice any major or concerning signs of infestation, take action ASAP. Take cuttings of the plant if possible to propagate a new one and throw the affected plant away (keeping the pot of course, cleaning it/disinfecting it well). Here in Canada: Pest control products are expensive but new soil is always cheap! I know that you can't necessarily propagate every type of plant but I go out of my way to only own easily-propagated varieties of plants just for this purpose of extreme but cheap pest control.

My mistake is where I live. I can't provide the environment succulents need (non-cactus succulents). They need DRY, COOL & 4 to 6 hours of bright sun. Where I live the temps get to over 108 degrees. I have no place to put them where they get what they need. The humidity fluctuates wildly from 13% to 100% all in one week. There is no way for them to acclimate to that kind of torture. Another problem is they get mealy bugs and all of the treatments removes farina. It happens so often they have no way to recover their farina from one attack to the other. It's alright if you get a mealy bugs once every 5 years. Not me. I get them all summer long. By the end of the summer,, they have no farina left. Then they get mold even tho I water them the correct way.

When propagating, you need to let them callus. I have a much better success rate when I do. Also this is the one time you don’t want the soil to dry out completely. I use 2” pots so the soil doesn’t stay too wet, but you also have to make sure it doesn’t dry out completely. I’ve propagated many succulents and cacti this way.

@darthtraya8305 ya. I let callous last time. If I water, get mushy an die. I dnt even water much. If I dnt water, shrivel up an die. Succulents Def more tricky

This is funny, someone sent me a Crassula rupestris (kebab bush - looked it up) yesterday and I was trying to figure out what to do with it. I'm not really a succulent person but this is really cute. First instinct, I'm going to kill it (poor thing) then I seen your video so it's worth a very good try not to. Crossing fingers and toes haha

These are the main plants that have stayed alive after i got my 2 children cause i was away from home for almost 3 months. I have noticed very little casualties. But has lost many other houseplants. For me succulants are not so difficulte to care for. Thanks, ashley, for all tips. ❤
