I am somewhat a beginner still, moved a half mile from the beach a few months ago and I learned driving the dunes all the time and the beach. My powerboost has a pretty easy offroad package that allows me to select conditions, sand, mud, snow, rocks etc and it will automatically switch the gears and turn off traction.

You distilled out a lot of great info into a short period of time. My 05 Tundra is pre-electronic so no worries about a computer getting in the way of my mistakes or successes off road. Proper traction control is achieved through your nuanced use of the gas pedal in combination with gear/range selection.

Stability Control OFF! Had no idea I had to hold Traction Control buttonfor 5 seconds to turn Stability Control off. On my 2016 Expedition this trick works at any speed below 35 mph; don't have to be stopped to turn both off. Go back above 35 mph and stability control turns itself back on no matter what you do. Just great information to know. Many thanks!

25psi for a heavy vehicle is a really good starting point for just all around mixed driving on easier tracks and touring. But I've never run enough sand or rock crawling to have to worry about going lower. But if I know I'm going to be doing small stints of sealed roads then I keep it at 30psi. But I don't really do that much off roading. I've also done some sections of the same trails at hwy pressures 40-44psi. And yea... it matters A LOT! Good quality all terrain tires are always a massive upgrade. If nothing else, do that!

@@david667766 It takes getting used to on the D2 but it basically applies braking to a tire that is spinning. The problem with traction control is it takes better throttle control to be effective. If you are a stomp the pedal to the floor kind of guy, it is not going to help. I do not know how it compares to other vehicles, but it works well on the D2's and LR3's

Overall a good video, but I want to put a little correction in there about the tire pressure. As much as I won't argue that you don't want to be too low for the HWY/Street, some vehicles (the WD21 Pathfinder is just one great example) recommend a tire pressure of 26 PSI both front and rear all the way up to the GVWR. Of course I say that everyone should look at the door placard on their vehicle as a good starting point for tire pressure if you don't have factory tires and/or you are a bit over the top on the vehicle weight.

Tires really effect how much you need to air down, 33x12.5r15 MTRs with Kevlar load d required a lot more airing down for sand than say KO2s load c in the same size partially because of the stiffer sidewalls and partially because of the tread. Most sand except the loosest and siltiest highway pressure was fine for the KO2s in 4 hi mostly because of how oversized the tires were for such a small ranger

Traction controls is not a problem in sand it only brakes a free spinning wheel it’s actually an advantage to have ON ! It’s the stability control that’s the problem because it kills engine power when one wheel spins faster than the rest

Good vid mate. Not sure you know the difference between electronic stability control (esc) and traction control? ESC is generally the one that gets you bogged, not traction control, there is a difference. So it's stability control that you want to turn off and it will get turned off automatically in low range.

I tend to think that the simple older 4x4s were so much better than these modern computer run things. They were easier to dirve and easier to fix. Even our 90 series that is over 20 years old now, has too much electronics and things just go wrong that cannot be fixed on the road. Back in the day, when none of this sort of information was easily available, we took a 4x4 course that taught us all the basics. With all the free info out there today, there really isn't any excuse for noobs not to know what to do before they head out. This channel alone has enough information so that noobs can be well informed before they take their 4x4 out on the first trip. There is no alternative to experience but forewarned is forearmed as they say.

My car automatically locks the rear diff once on sand mode and it is stuck on 4H not 4L 🤔🤔🤔 does that mean that you can use diff lock on some modern vehicles even in 4H? Anyway usually traction controls help in a bogged situation by stopping the spinning wheel and making the other grip so is good to use on vehicles without diff lock 👌

To step one i have a question to you! Do you know when the TPMS-Alarm at the Suzuki Jimny Modell JB74 starts in Australia? In Germany the TPMS-Alarm starts in comfort mode at 174 kPa in load mode at 199 kPa, so going under 25,4 psi or 175 kPa will start the TPMS-Alarm, which means in the display you will see a warning with three screenfilling messages, what is really eyecatching and intterrupts from save driving, it although minimize the changingtime as faster you drive.

Yes, and seemingly nothing can be done about this... I've been looking for a solution with no luck. Only thing I have seen it the devices that trick the system into thinking that the pressures are in range all the time, but this adds another electronic complexity that must be battery powered or hard wired to send the signal. If only the factory preset values could either be changed or the TPMS system turned off/disabled before deflating to go off-road.

Be careful sharing your tyre deflators that you can set to a ballpark psi, I spent ages getting mine just right for sand driving, lent them to a fellow driver, a stranger, and he unwittingly unscrewed all the deflators set point, I was pissed off. Sand is 90% of my 4X4 driving and had them set to stop around 10 to 15 psi, I always err on the side of caution, WA beaches are soft as most the time so just go straight down but not too low as to risk debeading a tyre.
