Play TV show themes like Bonanza, Barney Miller Show, gilligans Island, Brady Bunch. Great for having audience guess too.

Learning melodies is the best advice. It makes you think of music and not patterns and shapes. Learn as many melodies as you possibly can and you will play much better.

Great tips Mark..! It also helps to learn cover songs and try to see how those guitarists used the scales and triads and such to create their songs… Thanks ..!

Great advice! It’s important to find good vocal melodies that really resonate with people. Example: Without You by Harry Nilsson. The line “You always smile but in your eyes your sorrow shows….” That line is a beautiful melody.

This is the first "lesson" I've seen where playing song melodies vs. guitar parts was recommended. Can probably do the most in the shortest time to improve playing. Thanks so much!

My pleasure. I would recommend more often if I didn't know that 99% of guitar players won't do it. Sigh. Learn a scale pattern. Check. Learn a lick. Check. Buy gear. Check. But work on rhythm? No way! Transcribe a trumpet solo? No!! Try to sing what you play? (or play what you sing) Nope! I feel I so often have to hide real lessons inside of other things. Like medicine inside of Cheese Whiz! I'm not against scales and arpeggios and the like. It's just that there's more out there that one needs to do to actually make music. Playing melodies is one of those things. It's like what taking a daily walk is for your body. Okay, you can see you caught me in "rant mode". Ha ha! Take care brother!

When I first started my "born again" guitar journey nearly eight years ago now one of the first things I was told (by a very good online lessons guy) was to play melodies. I did it once and kept meaning to include it in my practice routines but it never happened. Until now! Great advice! Thanks.

When I started playing in 1955, we had no internet or even guitar lessons. What did I do? I sat in front of my Dansette record player and listend to people like Les Paul, Scotty Moore Duane Eddy, the Everlys and Buddy Holly. I listened for hours and hours, playing tracks over and over again. Until they sank on! Hard work, but well worth it. Now at the age of 80, I am still playing concerts here in France where I live. I have been professional for many years in the 60’s,70’s and 80’s until I recently “ retired” 😅 Yeah right! There is absolutely No parole from rock and roll is there? So, my advice to all novices and beyond, like Mark Zabel says “ practice, practice, practice! You never stop learning guitar. I still play for hours every day. Just saying. 😊😊😊😊😊😊

@@lesbois53 I started playing guitar in 1972 at age 11. Played day and night gaming a 12 bar blues with my brother on cheap nylon strung guitars. Then played with mates at school and listened to all those records, trying to recreate the sound. Then when I couldn't play something I got lazy and started making excuses. Never pushed on like I should have done. So I'm playing catch up now and having a blast!

Funny thing about that Carnegie Hall joke you mentioned. I recently went to NY to see a special Gala concert for Clive Davis's 92 birthday with lots of big named artists like John Mellencamp, Carlos Santana, Dione Warwick, Buster Rhymes, and a bunch of others that Clive had signed. I decided to walk from Port Authority to Carnegie Hall and on the way I see this guy on a quiet street playing the Sax with hardly anyone listening. He was just getting warmed up practicing away. Your joke reminded me of that. I had to tip the guy. Oh, btw, the real reason I went to Carnegie was because Clive Davis wanted this new young artists from the UK who I've been enamored with for the past 6 years named Courtney Hadwin to sing "Piece of my Heart", Janis Joplin's version to represent Janis who he 1st signed. The young 20 year old killed it opening for the show. Talk about practicing. She has to be told not to practice so much all the time for fear of straining her vocal cords. Practice is what it's all about.
