We have a vegetable in the Philippines called Kangkong, also called Water Spinach. You can buy it in Asian markets. It should do well in ponds.

Looooove water spinach. It's a super invasive plant in the US tho if it escapes somehow from where it's planted
@ready2run2006
@ready2run2006 2 жыл бұрын
@@ellenkuang8853 I think it will just die in the winter so it wouldn’t be invasive but be more like an annual in colder climate? The mint would probably be more invasive in comparison since it’s a perennial and spreads like crazy.

Yup, it's a member of the morning glory family Convolvulaceae, so it's related to sweet potatoes and flowering morning glories. I tried growing it a couple years ago, and found it does pretty well in waterlogged soil. Unfortunately I couldn't get it to flower and seed, and it did not survive the winter. If you live in an area with cold winters, it's only invasive if it goes to seed. In my garden, the flowering morning glories have dropped thousands of seeds, so the soil is saturated with them, and they come back every year.

I hope you're taking a break today to celebrate Independence Day. So many families out here are thankful for all the food you supply working with the soil - our most important sustainable resource. I know one thing - despite the so-called worldwide ongoing worldwide food shortages and empty shelves, most families that I know have well stocked pantries in preparation for the celebration. And it's all because of people like you. 👍

Another edible you can't get at the store 😆 is cattails. I keep mine in a large pot in the pond so it'll be easier to cull the roots and to keep it from becoming invasive.

I have a different variety of mint than the one shown in your video, but it's very pretty and grows insanely fast. I am getting ready to repot it for the 2nd time since April. It gobbles up all the water it can get, so not surprised it would do well in a pond. We are getting ready to put in a pond, and I'm wondering: we don't want fish. Would these plants do as well without the fish? Would they then require some kind of fertilizer?🤔

Ahhh water chestnuts. you can grow those in a kiddie pool, a cement mixing tub, anything with that shape. Just buy a handful when they are available (here it is late winter) and put them into your tub. River stone in the bottom gives them a good base to nuzzle in.. put about 6" of water in (keep it at least at this level), a layer of pine straw over the top in a semi-sunny spot and by fall you'll have a pond full of chestnuts. CAVEAT: We cant seem to get a harvest because every dog we've owned had decided they like them and will CLIMB fences to harvest them by themselves ... GRRRRRR
