My best mixing advice: the girlfriend/wife test, combined with the car test. You take your significant other out in the car, and you listen to it while watching her face. If she scrunches her nose, or gives that “oh I’m so proud of you....honey....” fake smile... you know you need to make a few more passes.

My mastering tip sounds simple, but before i export any beat I close my eyes, lean back and concentrate 100% on the song. Nearly every time I don't even get to the end, because i find something I don't like and change it, then i do it again until i can listen to the whole song without being annoyed by something.

Compression really was making my master chains sound horrible and distorted, but I was too scared to leave it out because I thought it was too necessary somehow. Like, you ain't mastering if you haven't applied compression. Thanks for encouraging us to just drop it if it isn't helping!

I think another tip that every producer needs to remember is to rest your ears. If you feel like you can't hear much of a difference after making changes, try giving your ears a rest with some silence or even sleep. Having a fresh mind and ears before giving your track another listen really helps. What you thought sounded good yesterday might not sound as good today, and you can make more impactful and meaningful changes to your mix/master.

When I compress in mastering, I usually go for RMS compression. It tends to make the sound more "stable" and the fast transients are still there, something that makes the limiter work even better.

These are some of great tips. The only thing missing, and not a lot of people talk about it, the final stage of mastering and preparing for distribution. Things like creating DDP image for printing, adding ISRC codes and other metadata and cd text etc... I know some of those things are used of CD's only, which are a thing of a past, but you would be surprised how many bands and musicians still want a certain number of physical copies to sell and give out on live shows and that kind of thing.

When you are talking about testing things out. I made a test where i was comparing export settings 44100/4800Hz and 16/24Bit Depth. I've suffled them in the playlist, so that i don't know which is which and i was comparing which sounds the best. I made it several times and overall result has amazed me, because in conslusion i choosed 44100Hz 24Bit Depth as best and as second place 44100Hz 16Bit Depth.

Love your videos. You never go off tangent and when you talk about things that differ you explain why it's appropriate with one and not the other. I honestly knew all these tips but hearing it in a different way can be just as helpful and spark new ways to use the things you already previously knew. I'm kind of late to the discussion party but I've been delving more into the mastering side of music production. What I've discovered is that a lot of samples, drum machine one shots and even sound engine from modern day synths and keyboard workstations all already compressed. So to add even more compression at mastering just guts out even more sound frequencies and makes the sound elements have this unnatural timbre sound to them. In fact the only time I use compression in my mixes is when I've recorded live elements and to be honest my audio interface adds compression even at recording.

I can really relate to the "Keep it simple" tip situation, and it doesn't only happen in mastering! It is really frustrating when I spend a lot of time addding things to my mix and when I compare it to how it sounded before all the hard work, I always convince myself that the "more complex" version sounds better no matter if the original one was much better. I just end up lying to myself to avoid the pain of knowing I've wasted my time and when I truly realize it it's too late. Porbably one of my biggest mistakes in music and sound producton! PS: Thank you so much for this video it was really helpful! :)

At the end of a mix you should always be looking for harshness or and mudiness so you can adjust before you export for master. One mistake that I´ve made multiple times though is to cut out too much of the body of an instrument/track. So be aware that you still have everything you need in a certain track to make it sound full but adjust it so it fits into the mix. Just a random thing you helped me find out through your tutorials, thanks Michael.

I was surprised when you mentioned not to use compression until you gave a valid reason not to and I agree, although I would still use a slight compression to glue everything together a bit more. With limiting during mastering I sometimes find that the punch of the kick is affected and then I would turn it down in the mix and export for mastering again, the punch of the kick is the less effected then... Thanks for the video's your awesome bud...

This is great advice thanks. Biggest takeaway was the negative EQ sweeping. Was starting to notice when I'd do it positively, unless I really kept that frequency that was standing out in my head while boosting to find it, I sometimes just lose track, trick myself and end up cutting stuff unnecessarily after losing my 'flat' reference point. I'm gonna try force myself to cut sweep more, you're looking to cut frequencies in the end anyways!

Put an EQ on the master bus and set low pass + high pass filters so that you can only hear a small band of frequencies. Compare these zones 20-60, 60-250, 250-2000, 2000-6000, 6000-10000, 10000+ Hz against your references. This is a bit tricky because changes in a specific band can alter other bands outside of these zones, so it would be advisable to compare with the full spectrum every now and then.

I do find often in my projects when i take a big cut and listen it's often not the frequencies I expect that make a difference. For example 800hz improving my bass when I take out a chunk instead of the low mids so I am a big advocator of this technique but I also do like the one you mentioned previously about taking a raising approach and sweeping on individual instruments as well.

Some good tips. Ive been working on my mastering skills for about five years now and im still not where id like to be. My listening skills arent quite what id like them to be. That being said I have a bunch of mastering plugins on my chain and spend a lot of time adjusting and turning off and on. I use Ozone which gets me at a decent starting point and i have several plugin alliance compressors (I keep compression very light if and when I use them) . I recently picked up the smart limiter plugin which i find excellent as a starting point. I also have several analyzers as well so double check visually. I often do a rough mix with my mastering settings while producing tracks but then walk away from it for weeks to months before i do an actual final mix master session. The distance from the track helps to make decisions immensely. I do this with Design as well. I don’t have the luxury of weeks to months with graphic design but even a day is helpful in getting distance and perspective.
