That last tip is honestly the most important, when I started as a dog handler 10 years ago and being at my first training sessions I was so embarrassed because it was large groups and it does hold you back, after 6 months I just didn't care and would use silly names, make silly noises, and I would look a bit mental but the only reactions I ever got was how surprised people were when they saw a guy in armour with all manner of work related tools making high pitch noises and going "A boo boo boo boo" with his giant working dog and they would only say how adorable it was when they saw us having a little moment, so yeah, don't worry what anyone thinks.

My mini schnauzer is 7 years old. And she is very reactive to other dogs. She's not aggressive. She just barks a lot and jumps. Any advice?
@TheCanineCoachDogTraining
@TheCanineCoachDogTraining 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Natalie! Yes.. trick your pup into a new reaction by saying YES every time you see another dog and give a high reward! Make seeing other dogs something AWESOME! On top of this you need to do a lot of obedience around other dogs to make the whole dog thing more boring.. the more of a nothing other dogs are to your dog the better! Also be aware of how close do you have to be to get a reaction? And work backwards.. and slowly get closer to other dogs over the next couple of months :)

My Cavalier King Charles puppy ( 11 weeks) just isnt phased by treats, she's never been a greedy dog at all. Consequently, on a walk she will frequently dig her heels in and just sit down, even off the lead she doesnt move. She wont come to treats even though at home shes pretty good at "come", "Sit" etc. Sometimes, we have got her to walk with us after teasing her to play with a stick, but she walks a bit then sits and digs her heels in again. Any advice? She's fine meeting other dogs, just takes it in her stride, so mellow.

Thank you for the tips! I just have a question… Will my puppy still listen to me when I call his name in public even when I stop giving him treats? Like if I say his name, and he knows that I didn’t bring any treats, will he still listen to me? And why?
@TheCanineCoachDogTraining
@TheCanineCoachDogTraining 3 жыл бұрын
Yes he will but I don’t want you to try without treats for months yet!! The reason it will work is because you are conditioning a habit to be engrained in to the dog through many repetition for at least 3 months minimum! If you are consistent you’ll have a lifetime of the dog never knowing how to ignore you because he hasn’t ever practiced it! Hope that makes sense mate

Getting a Rottweiler pup in a few weeks, any tips on how to get past the destruction/chewing phase?
@TheCanineCoachDogTraining
@TheCanineCoachDogTraining 3 жыл бұрын
Hey!! Yes!.. always give the pup something to do before he needs it! Meaning before he gets over excited and crazy exercise and train, constantly keep energy levels down! Constantly provide outlets before the dog is desperate for it :) also control the environment when you’re not there! If pup has access to things to chew.. he’ll chew limit access control the environment and stay on top of energy levels :)

So you recommend leash walking around 12 weeks? If you need to be outside with them before than is it ok to use the leash but not 100% worry on training. We will be picking them up at 8 weeks but have a drive home so will need to stop a few times for potty breaks. Also have a camping trip before they will be 12 weeks. Thanks for your videos enjoying learning so I am better prepared once we get our puppies (yes 2).
@TheCanineCoachDogTraining
@TheCanineCoachDogTraining 3 жыл бұрын
Hey!! so i would say just buy a long leash or a flexi lead.. all you need to do is avoid puppy from pulling you like a train.. give the puppy a little more space with a longer lead and he wont pull you :) then you dont need to worry about any training for your trip.

I have just taught my 9 week old puppy to heel using your five steps video. It only took her one session to get it! She’s zonked now 🤣 I will for sure be following up with all of your tips for the future, I have been looking for a KZbin channel that is the right fit for my puppy so I have subscribed. The only big problem I’m having with her is she chases the cat. Do you have any tips for a puppy that thinks chasing the cat is a fun game? I’ve been trying to distract her from him but I think the cat is just too exciting for me to get her attention. Thank you so much. 🐾

Aw thank you! Such an amazing comment! I’m so glad you are now part of the canine coach community 😍 Ideally while the puppy is young you could really do with the cat setting it’s own boundaries! (A swift swipe will do that!) if your cat won’t and all it’ll do is run then you need to desensitise. So lots of time with restricted access I.e pup can see the cat but not get it!!! Crates dog guards and a lead on in the house will all help this!

@@TheCanineCoachDogTraining Thank you for your reply! The cat is just under a year old so he is full of energy and goes right up to her then runs away. No wonder she thinks it's a game!🤣 It has been getting better, we have gates in the house so the cat can get away. I will try a lead on in the house thank you :)

My dog is 5 and we got him when he was 3 months shy of turning 2. He barks aggressively at other dogs but also big dogs he doesnt do well with. Hes okay with my nieces dog and best friends dogs, they are small like him. Hes a shihpoo mix. He does pull a lot as well on the leash. My past dogs were easy to train but i have a bit of a harder time with him. Any suggestions?
@TheCanineCoachDogTraining
@TheCanineCoachDogTraining 3 жыл бұрын
Dogs need to become boring for him. lots and lots of obedience training around other dogs until he calms down and makes better choices. he needs to know how to be around other dogs and not interact with them.. dogs are boring focus on mum and dad instead!

Some good advice, but I'm afraid the acoustics made this hard to listen to. The room needs some soft absorbent materials to muffle the harsh echo-y sound. Curtains, soft upholstered furniture, carpet?

hi - so i have watched alot of toms videos and to be fair the tips and tricks are SOOOO helpful- my pup was a little s**t when it came to ducks and other dogs on our walks, however our last few walks after watching this video have been SOOOO much better- especially tip 5! as Kauto (pup) is a rottie- i worry when people see him lunging at a duck or another dog while on the lead (bare in mind if he wasnt on the lead he wouldnt lunge he would just run over to them) but the last few walks i have taken a toy out with me (a fluffy ended tug toy) and when we see another dog or duck i get the toy out and we start playing and walking. yes he jumps up me to get to the toy BUT....we have walked past the other dogs/ducks and he hasnt batted an eye lid at them! and yes we might look like fools but its better than having a lawsuit thrown at me cos hes lunged at another dog and they have feared he might hurt them (even though he wouldnt hes the biggest softie around and just wants people to fuss...but they would know that!)

Kay Reid - What a great idea! Bringing something that has more value than the original distraction is exactly how you will get your puppy to ignore those distractions later! You are fixing the problem on several levels - first you are creating your own NEW distraction, but it's one that YOU control. You decide when it pops out, how it acts, and when he can get a hold of it. Second, you can build duration with that toy so that your puppy eventually learns to focus on you when he sees a distraction. By holding back the toy until the distraction is closer and closer each time, eventually you will be able to have your boy move past things without looking at them in wait for getting that toy at the end! This creates a behavioral habit, which eventual replaces the interest in the distractions, and at some point, you will probably no longer need the toy at all. Best of all, you're building an engaging relationship with your puppy which, as Tom says in this video, truly is the key to dog training! Keep up the good work!
