Will you please make a video on how people should do research on what dog fits their life instead of which one they like the look of!?? This would solve A LOT of problems!!

Burleigh is so sweet and his training is going amazingly! This video did a great job showing the power of having clear work and breaks. I wish I had known more about the "break" with my first dog. I used "free" and I used it to end training sessions, but I didn't apply it in other areas I should have and it resulted in needless confusion and frustration for my dog. I'm so glad I found your channel before I get my next dog, you have really helped me shape and clarify my dog-raising philosophy.

Hey Tom! Love your videos they’ve helped so much with my 7.5 month Aussie shepherd. I do have a question regarding heeling/distractions, at the moment she can heel for maybe around 15minutes minutes just on my driveway but as soon as we go to the main road or see other dogs/people she gets extremely overstimulated. Would you say this is partly due to her age/breed and will get less distracted once she gets older or is this more so a case of just exposing her to these distractions. She’s defo getting better and more engaged in me, but just wants to say hi to everyone.

How do you teach break when they don’t understand the command to begin with
@esaflaka9155
@esaflaka9155 2 ай бұрын
How do you properly polish up the sit command etc. Like to sit asss you're still walking. To hold it no matter what until you say so in every situation. My dog knows it and will stay but some situations won't. And distance to ask to randomly sit hasn't been established properly. If he's in his bed he will, but if not he feels the need to come closer to do so. And In his bed sometimes he still pushes boundaries and just stares at me.... till i get up and he quickly then does it

Tom when you do a ‘leave it’s and then say break how do you keep the dog from still leaving it? Our dog seems to think once we say break she can have the thing now.

@lisathewhitewolf
@lisathewhitewolf 3 ай бұрын
It might help to teach him the marker system, so you have some clear communication. Sometimes a dog seems stubborn when they just don't truly understand. Satisfying that drive before you walk isn't a bad idea, either. My husky mix is crazy about her flirt pole, which is one way to do it.
@kingchiefk.c.7662

Akita's are very stubborn and require a strong leader. Especially the males! They are very dominant so you have to be in control or they won't respect you or listen..

My current trainer uses pretty hard corrections with a large prong collar and I’ve seen them also use multiple corrections for one behavior before. Could this have desensitized him to the corrections I’m giving him that aren’t as hard? We have had him in training for over a year and still struggling with leash reactivity and staying behind my heel

Tom, could you please show us how you teach your dog that YOU are the alpha and he doesn't need to protect you from other dogs?
@dinnyf
@dinnyf 2 ай бұрын
Your dog having respect and trust in you are what make you their leader or “alpha” as you put it. When you lead then your dog feels safe and therefore doesn’t need to guard you. Dogs protect themselves when they don’t feel their handler can protect them. Building trust and respect is both relationship changes and obedience combined. Setting boundaries (using a leash to stop and wait at doorways, teaching place, respect around food and objects) and being consistent in your behaviour, praising good behaviour and correcting unwanted behaviour, stop talking and confusing your dog. It’s all on Tom’s channel. There is no magic command or action that makes you a leader with your dog.

My GS will heel across a six lane intersection, but no where else, and it’s my own fault for not applying that rule during walks..he’s a puller, but not awful pressure, just..what he wants to do, not a heel. I’ve trained him to expect a treat after heeling across that dangerous intersection and doing a down. After that he thinks he’s on his own. I need to have a talk w his trainer, lol..(me..)

Is it too late to train a 7 year old 80lb Pittie mix? He is a barker and reactive to other dogs or people while walking him. He is also very smart but doesn't listen. Taking in my sons dog who is in a small apartment. I have the room for him to get the exercise he needs.

@robinrutherfordcost4748

McCann has an awesome video on what kind of barker do you have - tells you what to do and not do depending on what kind of barker you have. Consistency, routine, good things happen around the new dog, and I always do everything first with the resident dog, so the newcomer has to wait their turn. We do a sit for everything and consistent use of your release word - you will be amazed at how much control that gives you. Hope that helps.

I disagree it doesn’t matter what command words you use. I mean, he’s right that it doesn’t matter to the dog, but at some point someone other than you is going to have to handle your dog. Using standardized command words is helpful in that situation.

@elleroberts765

@sswwooppee I only allow my kids to watch my dog because everyone else let's him do whatever he wants with zero accountability. I let my neighbor watch him once and he was dragging them even though he knows how to heel. Just because a person knows the correct word doesn't mean they know how to lead, unfortunately. This girl say sit six times. I never let her watch my dog again. I likened it to letting the kids stay with someone who didn't enforce things that you would normally enforce. Same thing happened to my daughter. Some lady was feeding my daughters dog people food after the dog had been taught not to beg. The dog stared at her for a couple of days after that every time my daughter ate. Naughty neighbors!
