I absolutely loves Simons approach to everything and they way he speaks to the horses! I didn’t know much about him but wow he has gained so much respect from me, it was ‘boring’ like he said it was so fascinating and I will definitely be using these techniques in the future. He is just so soft with the horses it lovely to watch.

Tell Simon he absolutely does not need to apologize! As a rider / trainer I absolutely LOVE videos like this, they are already like a free study session, and I also love to share them with a young friend of mine that wants to be a trainer as really great examples of training. Especially for this one I think the biggest lesson is that slowing down at the very start is the best way to build a truly solid foundation.
@clairecakes9860 Жыл бұрын
A lot of people forget that horses really are heard animals. It’s so nice to see a trainer that uses this principle and isn’t afraid to do that kind of groundwork. It would be so much easier if people just got off sometimes.

The way he takes the time to help her adjust to the water and doesn't push her, instead guides her through on foot. Simon is the best 💖 I love that he gets off and shows the horses things on foot, i wish more people would do this. It builds so much confidence and you avoid jaggung them in the mouth or slamming down on their backs. Would love to see Meg do more in hand work/groundwork as with your young audience you could introduce it to so many and help so many horses.
@Killerqueentle Жыл бұрын
I think it also helps the horse to deal with scary things because they can see you and see you do it which makes it less scary for them, it’s like a security blanket. Once they understand on the ground what they have to do and everything isn’t terrifying anymore then you get on and slowly show them what it’s all about while ridden. I agree that I think more people should show their horses things on the ground first.
@mbf93811 ай бұрын
I’ve always done this but I’ve also had people take the piss out of me for it so I imagine that’s why more people don’t. It’s crazy though as it’s really common among top level event riders to do this yet a lot of people think look down their noses if it’s not a battle!

I've been a fan of Winnie since the vid several years ago when she was really a baby, running with some of the mares, and she had the most flowing gallop of any of them. Nothing bunchy-grabby about her use of the rear end (typical of some breeds. When a 2yo has that kind of flowing movement, and a big loose-moving walk, it's a good sign. Then her first loose jumping moments...yeah! And today, loved the changes in her facial expression, and her movement with Simon. She hooked right in to what the big deal was, and she was all for it. Even that first jump over the log in the hedge...she was looky, but not eager to refuse...just 'Wait, what?...oh...okay, then."

Simon did a fantastic job with Winnie. Slow and steady will always win the long race. And that's what you have to look at, especially with a young horse. Make them LOVE THE JOB you are asking them to do for the rest of their life!! Keep them Safe, make them Confident and keep them Happy in their job, and they will always give their heart and soul to do it for you. You couldn't have picked a better person to start Vlog-Mas with, Meg!! Especially since he was riding your new pride and joy, Winnie. I LOVED this video. The horse looks happy, Simon’s way is so nice. I’ve met a lot of old school riders that don’t really care about their horses, the upbringing of a young horse is crucial to how they handle competition and stress down the road. If they don’t love their job, they end up having physical and mental problems. This is how they learn to love it, everything should be a game ❤️

I love Simon’s philosophy regarding taking things slowly so that the young horse is never over faced, and instead builds confidence by starting them slow and low (also the in hand introduction to certain obstacles is great, and actually something I’d planned to do with one of my more confident horses to see what he thinks of small xc obstacles). Definitely better for the horse to go too slow than too fast and risk ruining their confidence, especially during such a formative training period (young, green, hasn’t done many XC obstacles). Letting the horse go at its own pace and figure some things out for themselves. Keeping the experience calm and positive. All great techniques. Winnie looks mega btw! I bet you’ll have loads of fun eventing her in the future!😊
