Aren't customer returns just a cost of doing business? I see a logical disconnect between sales staff using sales "strategies" to drive sales, and retailers complaining about returns when said customer has second thoughts once they get the instrument home and try it in real life scenarios outside the controlled sales-driven environment of the store. I don't see anything wrong with customers simply changing their mind about a guitar.

Yeah but sometimes people are goofy and cause a shop unnecessary headaches because they haven’t done their research or make impulsive purchases. Sometimes. Other times someone like your wife or girlfriend has your arm twisted behind your back and forces you to buy another guitar. 😂

I bought a Breedlove acoustic from Sweetwater last year based on the look of the guitar and a few KZbin reviews. Once it arrived, I was really excited to start playing it, unfortunately after the first day I decided to return it, the sound didn't resonate with what I heard in my head, wanted a more robust sound. I finally settled on a Guild Jumbo the following year; the guild is what I was looking for.

Yeah, A guy I worked with pushed me down a flight of stairs and my neck is full of metal now. I bought one guitar that was over 9 pounds since then and had to sell it because my arm went into spasm before just going numb and falling asleep within half an hour. Things have gotten somewhat better, but the lighter the better.

You are right about the Gretsch taking some time. Took me 2 years to get used to my Jet. The hardware is all 'tall' under the hand. By comparison, when I picked up a Yamaha Revstar for the first time I just played it for hours. Everything was in the right place, the right size and fit the hand over the whole thing, sitting or standing. Fits to the point of it becoming 'transparent' to me and all I see is the notes I want to come out. My OMC acoustic has the same quality as opposed to a full body dread'. PS: I have never returned a guitar. Bad juju!

On the “bonding” issue, I can see how people might use the excuse as I’ve bought guitars that I haven’t even played yet. And one might feel a little foreign, especially going from say an EB/MM or Fender Strat to a Gibson LP or Midtown, but I think it’s up to the player to spend some time with a new guitar that might have a different scale, neck radius, hardware, etc., and figure out what *does* work for you and go from there. I think it broadens the players skill set.

Back in the day, my mother bought a new acoustic and after taking some lessons and so forth, she thought she just couldn't play guitar. Turns out, it was unplayable. So high off the neck you can't fret chords after the fourth or fifth fret. It was a cheapo from the early 70's, but she should have returned it. The action is almost dobro-like. On the positive side, I use it for slide to this day.

I understand some people take advantage of the return, but I think honestly most dealers should QC the guitars better on arrival. Shops always have guitars with issues waiting for people to buy. I've seen Murphy labs with Tuning machines that don't work, brand new martins that need neck resets, Gibson SG's with so low of a neck angle that the abr is sitting on the studs and the action is high and Custom shop fenders with high frets. So I take your point, but also, there's a fair bit of stuff being sold that should have been sent back by the dealer. Also, dealers trying to gaslight customers into thinking these issues are normal is not cool. Not every store is run like Casino.

I remember one store was closing down temporarily (with plans to reopen later with a new format-which happened) So they had a clearance sale, and they had a set neck electric for a great price, so I checked it out, as did others. But it had a very twisted neck, so people kept putting it back But if someone who didn’t know better saw it they might have bought it, and the sale was “All sales are final”

OK, guys, I've been subscribed for a couple years now, but my first comment. Let's see if you read the comments. I have a story. It has to do with your 5th "funny" "I just can't bond with it" excuse. I actually have an I couldn't bond with it story. I've been playing for over 45 years. I own a LOT! of music equipment. I went to High School with a guy who I sold his first electric guitar and started him on his musical journey. He owned a local music store for 40 years, and to support him, and local businesses in general I bought tons of equipment (PA's, Amps, Mics, pedals, and of course guitars) from him. The very last piece of gear I bought from him was a hollow body electric. It was the last (acoustic or electric) body style i needed and (I can't afford Gibsons) wanted an epiphone ES-335. He wasn't an epiphone or Gibson dealer, so I bought an Ibanez Artcore AS75G. It's a beautiful guitar, and plays and sounds great, I just can't bond with the neck. There's just something about the radius, the fret spacing and the length that didn't click with me, but i figured I'd get used to it. A month later, he announced he was retiring and closing the shop. I wrote him a PM on Facebook and said Dude, after all the years we've been friends and all the business i've given you, you knew i wanted the Epiphone, I wouldn't have bought the Ibanez I would have gone online and purchased the Epiphone. Five years later and it sits there in the case, I've never opened or played it again. Maybe I'll give it another chance, but anyway, that's my "I couldn't bond with it" story.

This was completely my oops! I ordered a PRS S2 Semi-hollow Custom 22 in January of 2020 of course it was delayed that year I understood that & it wasn't ever an issue. I got the guitar on September 30th, it was great until I played it. I've never experienced a guitar prior or after that had a smaller nut width than 42mm or 1 11/16 inches. I tried playing it & just got frustrated with it. It stayed on the wall hanger being the prettiest & by far the most expensive guitar I owned. I ended up trading it for a Revv G20 with a 1 X 12 Cab and all of the fancy stuff that came with it. I live in Canada so that guitar was $2440 retail. I felt REALLY stupid that I didn't think anything about that when I was researching the guitar & reading the specs before I ordered it. Is that an viable reason to get rid of a guitar?
@alexanderhanksx
@alexanderhanksx 8 ай бұрын
I think it's reasonable. You probably could have given it a little more time and seen how you like that radius, but in all honesty some people just can't get along with certain specs. I've actually never purchased a guitar that I haven't put my hands on first because I'm horrified not only of buying something I don't like the feel of but I have a lingering fear of lemons which really aren't a problem in 2023.
@Canadianwheelchairguitar
@Canadianwheelchairguitar 8 ай бұрын
@@alexanderhanksx I kept it & it for 2 years, just didn't work for me. I do have a VERY nice lunchbox amp that I can use from 4-20 Watts. Something I use for hours everyday. I'd play that guitar for a few hours one day & then I'd want to play it, but it stayed on the wall for a week until I tried it again. Had it been available in the store, I would have played it & left it after trying it. I don't like reading specs online when buying a guitar, seems like you're buying a mattress online, you should probably try it first.

It’s an awful feeling when you have to return a guitar , especially when it falls short . In todays market I’d have to say it’s just business because most business is online . Recently a dealer told me if you buy on EBay you have 6 months to return. That’s pretty crazy but that’s what I was told . I’ve returned 3 instruments in the last 20 years and wanted to keep 2 Cheers BC

I am a left handed player and have to pretty much order any of my basses without playing them first. I have an excellent luthier that gets everything I buy to adjust it. Pretty much every time after the adjustment the bass plays perfect. Sometimes I have to play it for a month or so and then tweak something. You right handed players walk into a store and there are 95% or better of stock for you to try. Not left handed players. Maybe 2 basses and a couple of guitars. If you want to delve deeper many of the manufactures do not make the high end product left handed. Yamaha, Ibanez to name a few or just 2 colors vs the 6 right handed colors. The struggle is real.

I returned only one. Its was sold as a store exclusive and a pre-order... right... so you'd think it was new but when it arrived it had a serial number that clearly indicated it was 3 years old. The store's artificial intelligence customer service bot clung to the definition of "new" being "not previously sold" but I was unconvinced and returned it. Only lost like $40 bucks on the shipping back to Chicago... Now I have a hand wired vintage traynor instead. Its 50 years old and I knew it when buying it and I feel no amp envy whatsoever, even after hearing mark arm's super 6 reverb last month.

I am 68 and have seen all of ONE Twisted Neck in My Lifetime, they are that Rare and When twisted, you don't have to tell them You Show them the Twist, For those that prefer spending Money over Practicing playing can be very hard as well. and a Professional Set Up might be Essential to it playing perfectly, Most times buzzy necks require a truss rod tweak that is easy or playing too hard like I do sometimes, Most people don't truly have trained ears to notice minor intonation issues if any existed. Unless you play it, you can't bond with it, so maybe it means playing it enough to Bond with it, so not always chasing Tone in a Guitar or Gear and Finding that Tone in yourself and your fingers

I’ve had buyer’s remorse with a couple guitars; they were good guitars- I just didn’t like them, but I wouldn’t have thought of returning the guitar because I didn’t like it-nobody forced me into the purchase. I just kept them for a couple years, periodically taking out of the case, playing, concluding, “nope, still don’t like it,” and putting it back in the case. After a couple years I sold them for the same or $50 more.

BEAT THE PISS OUT OF IT!!! That's my lutherie suggestion. I have had I don't know how many guitars over the last thirty six or thirty seven years that I have been playing. I stopped counting after seventy five. It's been at least a hundred if not more. I play the way I play the same way Eddie Van Halen played when he was alive - with reckless abandon!! 🤣 I learned all I needed to know from him. I started playing when I was twelve or maybe thirteen. I learned on FIREWOOD with strings! The first guitars that I've had have been garbage most of the way through. I've played on Japanese garbage guitars and the like with plywood bodies, garbage pickups, broken trussrods, and machine heads that won't stay in tune and total trash electronics and tremolos made with bent steel string blocks that might as well be made from T.V. dinner trays of aluminum!! I played until my fingers bled and were raw. I learned what I know about lutherie from them and what Eddie taught me which was very rough to say the least. My beginnings into lutherie were hammer and chisel and spray paint and sandpaper! I destroyed a couple guitars in my time but the more I did it the better I got at it. As with anything else I excelled slowly but learned about setting up my guitars and fret work. The more guitars that I worked on the better I got to the point of perfection. It all takes time. I know my stuff and more about guitars than I ever thought possible. Sadly most of these things I never had a problem with - I just replaced what I needed to and adjusted my bridges and did frets as I had to. I read on a website where one guy had a customer on reverb.com complain about the weight of a guitar that he complained arrived broken. But it couldn't have happened in the case - it looks like the guy dropped it and then concocted a story about UPS and whatnot. That guy was a moron! He didn't' want it after damaging it and tried to pull a fast one. But I could've fixed it about twenty minutes and had it ready to go in a couple days. It's sad that technology has gotten so good that with a little knowledge and some patience anyone can do fretwork and fix necks! Most of the excuses I've heard but I too have had guitars that I simply couldn't stand and just had to part with. I understand that much but it's usually a thin neck - not twisted. Sometimes it's the feel of a neck or the frets. If it's a good guitar that just doesn't appeal to me simply because I don't like the neck shape or fret wire I'll let it go if it's in excellent condition rather than destroy it or modify it. I had a Squier Strat that came out twenty one years ago. I was one of the first to buy it. This was when they went to a two point fulcrum plate with USA Fender American Standard pickups in them. At the time Epiphone was being made in Japan with USA made Gibson pickups. I think that Fender was following suit then. The neck just felt too skinny at the nut and the frets were to high to my liking. Now I can adjust to any neck and not care. I have a Gretsch and it's no different that getting into a car or truck after riding a bus for me. So I can see why someone wouldn't want a guitar for that reason but I don't care about weight. That I couldn't give two shits about. I've already heard and see most of this stuff having been in around guitar shops and knowing people that own one. Thanks for posting this. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one that thinks most of these reasons if not all are ridiculous excuses.

I spend hours sometimes weeks with my guitars to make sure they are 100% set up to my liking and it works for me idk spend more time with your guitars and you’ll eventually find exactly where you want it and when you figure that out you can make most guitar’s absolutely scream (PROPERLY) with no buzz and its so much more acoustically audible strings can be to high off the board so if you think your intonation is out check your bridge height its to high if your neck is straight and its going sharp sometimes a fret level allows you to bring your neck inside more to the strings without buzz wood is mysterious yes but not alien it is only wood not some majestic unicorn 😂

Most decent guitars can be set up to play well. Even inexpensive ones. But other factors can be major problems to having it work for you. Scale length, Neck profile and Width are big issues for many even with a perfect setup. I have some MIJ electrics with VERY narrow necks and a Cole-Clarke Fat Lady II 12 string with a 2" nut that is like a classical guitar width fretboard. Just too wide, however my fingers do fine with my other 5 12-strings. I have trouble with tall hardware as well, prefer the feel of it close to the guitar top. Hate strat hardware and trems, gimme a Bigsby and roller bridge. Set low or even recessed.

Honestly most of time, the difference between a guitar that doesn't play well and one that you love to play is a just a matter of a proper setup. Unless you are buying a high end guitar (and even then) you should always expect to have to do some sort of a setup on a new guitar. I have a friend who bought a cheap $250 guitar that he wanted to return because the frets felt rough and the fretboard was really dry. I told him that this could easily be fixed with some painters tape, a low grit steel wool pad and a few drops of lemon oil. I also have a friend who knows how to work on guitars that bought a $1200 Fender Strat that had a fret that was noticeably lower than the others. Had it been a high fret, that would have been an easy fix. Considering what he paid for it and the amount work required to fix that issue, he absolutely returned the guitar.

Dudes. You 2 need to try a Solar Guitar GC1.6. Single cut. I’ve 5 Solars, 2 of which are GCs 1 hard tail 1 floyd rose, an E1.6 FBB with Evertune. A beast that stays in tune (funny that) but plays cleans spectacularly well. And an S1.6 and an A1.6. And I want more of them but am on medical benefits due to illness. I also love my rare gold Pia, squier strats (inc 1 I bought brand new in 1987 made in japan) and my PRS Tremonti single cut. Been playing for 50 years and I finally found the perfect neck - yep my Solar guitars. No wide thin pattern thick narrow fat shenanigans with Solar necks. Like the 1.6 neck ? Then the other models, Vs, Es, etc all have the same profile necks with the exception of Artists guitars. Cheers from NZ 😎🎸🤘

You mean the Artist brand? I've wanted their Thinline '69 for a while now. It just has everything I like, nothing to do with the low cost. They used to say "coming soon" on the Artist-usa website. It bothers me that they aren't available here in the States. Sorry to vent, but it's bloody annoying, lol!!

Note to self-do not buy from Casino. I don’t return a lot of stuff, but I want a hassle free option in case I don’t like my new Les Paul for any reason. I’m fine with a reasonable restocking fee, but let me know up front and don’t dismiss my concerns as BS

Guitar/human bonding is real. I have a budget Japan built 70’s Epiphone acoustic that is barely playable (~1” at 12th needs new frets etc.) and a ‘19 Martin OM-28 (bought new plays perfectly). I would rather play the Epi any day even though it’s basically garbage for anyone else. The Martin is just a soulless guitar to me and the Epi,… is like the perfect person you immediately click with. There isn’t a single guitar I’d EVER choose to own over that bolt-on neck 100% laminate 1970’s budget guitar that’s nearly impossible to play. Quite literally the only reason I own two guitars is because the I have nightmares about someone messing up the re-fret and it’s taking me years to work myself up to having that done. This is only about acoustics, I haven’t owned an electric in over 15 years and can’t comment on them.

@@KT-fn6me yeah, everyone and everything is different. The only other guitar I “clicked” with was a 1992 D-35; that guitar was perfect. So much so I didn’t notice that the topsheet had been pulled up so far that the bracing couldn’t still be functional around the bridge area. I would have bought it without realizing if I didn’t have a friend with me. It was so bad I have no idea how I missed it; he could tell from over 10ft away.

I can't agree more. Human / Guitar bonding is a real thing. I think it's more mental than physical but real no less. Years and years ago my then GF saw a cheap acoustic in a pawn shop and figured I could do something with it so got it for me Years later the girl is loooooong gone but that cheap acoustic is still my #1 I'll be buried with that thing if they allow it lol.

I'm dig'n the topics around the Google tubes guitar community lately. All these whiners and armchair techs that heard this or that, need to remember you can find fault in anything, if your constantly looking for it. Try looking for ways to make your guitars better, instead of ways to reject them. Nothings perfect outta the box. Get over it.

I went into the local national chain guitar store to try out a Martin D-28. It was strung with electric guitar strings! I took it to their guitar tech and asked him to put the proper string type on it, which he did. I really hadn’t planned on buying that guitar as I didn’t have the money for it, but I now know that when I’m ready to buy a nice guitar (probably a Martin HD-28), it won’t be at that place.

I feel this is a bit self serving as why would we need any fake reasons to return a guitar ? Unless this is now a comedy troupe This just feels like the backroom in any retail sales job, kinda gross to be honest. We all must remember what it was like in our young/inexperienced days. I mean whatbdo you think is happening ? Their taking it home, removing the pickgaurd and grabbing the thousand dollar bill underneath all guitars ?!

I fully stand behind the opinion that a brand new guitar should NEVER require a setup. Especially as they go up in price point. Eventually, guitars are going to come without strings...it's getting ridiculous.
@adamsolton
@adamsolton 8 ай бұрын
You expect everything to be perfect for you, don't you? A guitar setup will be different for different people's preferences, different humidity levels, different temperatures, etc. A setup is a very personal thing. Do you expect retailers to individually setup every guitar they sell? That would drastically increase the cost of doing business, then, guess what, you'll be complaining about guitar prices going up. Stop complaining and pick up a screw driver and Allen wrench and spend 5 minutes doing it yourself. This will also get the setup how YOU like it, not how the person setting it up likes it.

LOL, the dreaded, lame as all get out, "I didn't BOND with the guitar" excuse. Biggest line of BS out there. Look, you have buyer's remorse and feel that you spent too much money. Or you found a guitar that you think looks better, so you want to get rid of the one you just bought. Just be honest, don't use the BS "I didn't bond with it".
