The reason most cars below the F1,P1,Senna and extremely low (25 units or less) limited series MSO models/variations (mainly HS 688) is because of Mclarens business plan, from when they started building the Mp4 12c they will have had a business plan for the next 25/30 years to build a range sports cars catering for different targets in the market, to grow a company you need a plan and depending on how quickly you want to grow the company along with assets like warehousing/tools/materials/staff ect ect, being a bespoke car manufacturer means you have to also build the brand and go up against other bespoke companies that have been house hold names for almost 100 years, so if you want to stay relevant and on par with these bigger companies you will need product, there is no point in producing 1 car every 5/10 years because you won't be able to grow quickly like that, if you did do it that way then yes their cars would not depreciate and given how good mclarens design and technology is im sure those cars would be going up in worth every year, however the company would stay extremely small and probably only have a few employees building a limited number of the same car for 10 years, they would also only have one target market of extremely rich people and no show rooms all around the world which helps grow the brand immensely, they would have the odd salesman sharing the odd showroom with bigger bespoke car manufacturers with more options. So Mclaren has obviously gone down the other route of flooding the market with plenty of models and variations at a wide price margin catering for quite a large target market for a bespoke car manufacturer, it means they grow the brand and its prestige a lot quicker, they can take on more experience staff, showrooms, salesmen and advertisements, they can compete with the bigger older more known companies, but it comes at a cost, those people who buy the more numerous range of models will lose out on depreciation because mclaren are bringing out newer, better models extremely quickly especially for something that's still very expensive at £200,000 to 400,000 price range, they are helping the brand grow though and McLaren knows this, this is why they do try to give a lot back to those range of customers, they do a lot of car meets for mclaren owners and things along those lines to help the experience, mclaren can still cater for their extremely rich customers but it's the customers that buy the more normal models that are contributing to building the brand, once the 25/30 year plan has been reached and the mclaren brand is just as big and as known as Ferrari,Porshe, Lamborghini I'm quite sure they will slow down with flooding the market and that will help more models hold their value, it's obviously working because plenty of people are still willing to buy those models even though they know what will happen, and that can only work if the product is good, yes mclaren does have a problem with electronics and fit n finish on the cheaper cars and that's probably due to less hours per car so a profit can be made and the electronics will obviously get better given time, don't forget they have only been building production cars for about 10 years, the mechanics are sound along with their performance so I think they are doing a brilliant job given their age compared to bigger older companies, they are definitely here to stay and they have definitely given those other companies a kick up the arse, the competition between the top companies now is amazing and it's helped all the brands become more relevant and popular.

Martyn Dyson This is an awesome comment Martin, Thank you so much for this! This is exactly the conversation I wanted to start. I agree with the points that you have stated and I’m so thankful for the time that you put into this. Here in South Africa the value of Mclaren’s depletes drastically after 1 year of owning one, of cause not all but many owners have mentioned they are upset but this, hence the mention in the video. I’m sure Mclaren has their reasons and they are valid. It’s just a pity that a car of this caliper, even though a young company, looses value, Every small company(and I say this lightly) does start off small and slowly. Being a Mclaren Fanboy myself, I cannot wait to see the growth and expansion of this company. Again, thank you so much for this comment!

Fair point on the alcantara wheel. You just have to make sure you wash your hands before you drive every time and you can stretch to maybe 10k

Rafal G I agree, If its a weekend worrier, then I think you can maybe push 10 000, but how many times do these guys wash their hands when out with mates and all leaving at once, they want to all show off so the quicker you get to the car, the better.

@@BasicBenjamin I have a 600LT. 15k. daily driver. I just wear old school driving gloves. Better grip and feel. No issues with the steering wheel. I actually prefer alcantara to leather because the leather just looks old after a while whereas the alcantara looks good for a longer period of time. The leather feels better with bare hands though. I don't care what anyone thinks about me wearing gloves. Didn't agree with some of your points. 1. Longtail - it's not just that. the brakes and suspension from the 720S. 100kg lighter. wider track. aero. The only option for senna seats. track telemetry. less sound insulation. exhaust placement. more carbon everywhere. 2. Doors - it's one of the attractions and you live with the pro's and con's. 3. Expense - a lot of people get stuck on options. The base car is good. All opinions though. My 600 is my daily driver. It was the closest thing that I could find that felt like a lotus lol.

@@sanglemalt Yeah, alcantara, unlike leather, is manmade and is actually more resilient in the long run. Alcantara steering wheels that look worn out are usually not really worn out, they are just caked with dirt and grime. All you need is a good alcantara cleaner to get it back to like new condition. Even a generic vehicle fabric cleaner will work wonders. Also agree that there is a lot more to the LT than just a body kit. In addition to what you stated, the 600LT has a faster steering rack, Senna brake booster, shortest production car exhaust, stiffer motor mounts, and faster tranny program.

South Africa is a different animal when it comes to cars, I say this because I believe we still perceive certain brands to be more expensive due to the historical price of that brand compared to other brands. For instance, not many people think of an Audi as a very luxury status symbol when in fact some of their top of the range models outprice their BMW and merc competitors. The same can be said about McLaren. Yes, its a supercar, yes it's fast and exotic but it's not a raging bull or a prancing horse! Non-car people will easily identify a Rarri or Lamb easily, and most supercar buyers will ego buy, so when you drop 5Mil on a car you want people to oooooh and ahhhh wherever you go to further assert that you're the man lol That's my 2 cents. I always say to my girlfriend, I know the Nissan GTR is a mean machine and the specs are great but I'd rather drop a little more cash on a Lambo because I do not want to spend time explaining that my Nissan actually is fast and slays supercars. lol
@BasicBenjamin5 жыл бұрын
This is a fantastic response and I agree with you fully. If you want the looks and you want people to know exactly what they are looking at, then sure, by your run of the mill RED Ferrari or your lumo Lamborghini, But if you buy a Mclaren, surprisingly not many people will understand it what car it is, I know my dad's gen doesn't quite know what Mclaren is, besides it being in Formula 1. I really appreciate this comment, as before, This is exactly what I wanted, I want to hear your thoughts, because maybe they are the same or maybe some will be different, but the fact that more people feel this way is great to know. I agree with the Audi comment as well, Yes we all know that there is the trinity, Mercedes, BMW, and Audi, but something about Audi, even though a competitor to the others, still somehow edges them at every turn. Thank you for this comment Theo! Keep up the good works!

Its a problem to some people sure, but to others its not a problem if you take a damp towel, for example after wiping it down drying it and then rubbing said towel all over the steering wheel for about 3 to 5 minutes, not a problem at all, its called cleaning.

I think the reason McClarens lose so much value is due to the fact that they break much easier than Lambo's / Porsche's / Ferrari's. There's quite a few videos that I've seen where people constantly complain that the cars don't last as long as they intend to and the cost to repair them is as much as a Kia Picanto ;)
@TheTimmyH4 жыл бұрын
'break'? not really...mechanically they're fine but they do have issues with electronics and system software, build quality and aftercare isn't particularly fantastic compared to the manufacturers you mentioned either.

The majority of problems I've heard have come in the early 2016/17 models...haven't heard of too many faults with the 600LT (so far).
@yeet_za4 жыл бұрын
@@TheTimmyH Did you read my initial comment? It was surrounding the price of Mclarens losing more value than other sports cars due to breaks, meaning, anything on the car. Generally, people wouldn't want to buy something that doesn't have a reliable reputation, whether it's electronics or whether it's engine problems. Then again, where I am from (South Africa), you hardly see any Mclarens with over 5000KM's on them, because people are too scared to drive (because your car may get dinged / stolen / hijacked) AND it's hard finding someone reliable to work on them (also, everything has to be imported with a premium + 15% tax on the item, it also takes 2-6 weeks for the part to get here). Ferrari / Lamborghini, same story. Porsche, not so much (many dealers, many porsches driving around country-wide). 10 Year guarantee on the vehicle from Dealerships (Doesn't cost you a cent to fix / replace anything other than exterior).

There’s a multitude of reasons for depreciation as I’m sure you are aware and undoubtedly there will be with this car. A strong reason for depreciation is unit volume, there are simply too many of them being built so the prestige and rarity element drops off. Another would be investment opportunity, which is looking decidedly bleak for out & out juicy big engined supercars. Also McLaren have had a bit of bad press of late predominantly relating to the 720S, which will in no doubt lead to brand uncertainty leading to an impact on demand & price. Also, competitors, there may be something better available for similar money.
