Agreed, The thing about obscure TV shows are that any TV show that is truly obscure pre-90s wont have nearly any trace to find short of personal memories. So anything Cecil will post here will be known by some people here, heck especially here given the subject matter of his other videos.

Yakov Smirnoff was great on Night Court where he played reoccurring character... Yakov. Right up there with Brent Spiner who played reoccurring character... Bob. Yakov was from Russia and Bob was from... Yugoslavia. Night Court! What a show!

I definitely remember "What A Country!". I liked Yakov Smirnoff although once the Soviet Union came unglued, much of his schtick was considered old hat. I remember him also as a recurring character on Night Court playing a Russian immigrant who befriends Judge Harry Stone. Loved Otherworld! I watched it when it was first run and it had so much potential! I was really disappointed it didn't last more than a season. I remember the actor who played son "Trace" ended up on Head of The Class (as preppy genius Alan Pinkus) not long after the show ended. I had heard of Dog and Cat but never saw it. Obviously I didn't miss much.

Otherworld was great, the different zones or city states, gave each episode a unique flavor. The cast was great, particularly Johnna Lee as the daughter. I loved this, but thought I dreamed it! CBS only aired 8 of 13, never giving the show a chance. I highly recommend seeking it out. Thanks Cecil

Weird too see that Otherworld wasn't very popular, but I think It might hit better today for 2 mayor things. 1: We are on a time where most shows and movies tap into the concept of an alternate universe. And 2: I has the actor that played Mike" Freakin" Hermatraut from Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul as the main villain.

I was a huge sci-fi nerd in my youth, & would tune in to anything with a sci-fi premise. I do remember Otherworld's basic premise & that the family was constantly on the run & adapting to different circumstances in each territory while the officer pursuing them had less success...but that's about all I recall, I'd forgotten that the show's name was one word (I'd thought it was "The Other World" for the longest time). Great to see you cover it here!

Banks also landed a big role on TV back in the 1980's with "Wiseguy". Interestingly enough, Dean Norris who was also on "Breaking Bad" and "Better Call Saul" got inspired to go into acting by seeing Banks in the series and thinking "well, they need all kinds of people".

Hey, I remember Otherworld as well as Dog and Cat -- but yeah, they were obscure. I recall a female chauvinism episode of Otherworld, and an attempted Playboy style write-up of Krull was "I like to shout and shoot." As for Dog and Cat, Antonio loved to say "Zilch" and when he had to say goodbye to an old flame, Basinger tried to cheer him up with a hamburger with lots of onions. Now those were the days when they appreciated writing.

Since I was an 80s kid I can understand why I never even heard of Chopper squad. Being a 70s show reruns were probably aired late at night past my bedtime. But browsing through the comments it made me laugh that the only people familiar with it are Brits, given their reputation of being obsessed with classic Aussie soaps and dramas. Also, after recently looking into the controversy surrounding Dan Schneider that feet reference cracked me up.

I love when you do insert shows I’m vaguely familiar with..it’s a reward for watching while learning about things I didn’t know. I feel the pop culture landscape tends to bury a lot of shows despite them airing and being seen by a large audience, so many shows have been forgotten from a stand point, even if singularly people may remember them. For example, when you think of TGIF, everyone mentions Family Matters or Step by Step, but no one mentions Hanging with Mr. Cooper in the same breath; or when people talk about Must See TV they talk Friends or Seinfeld, but forget Caroline in the City, the Single Guy, or Boston Common.

Ya know, watching this Forgotten Shows series reminds of how an idea can be interesting but the execution is not so great. I often wonder why they don't find shows or movies in that category when they decide to do remakes. I mean, I would certainly watch a Chopper Squad movie with Chris Hemsworth and Hugh Jackman! 😄
@Musematt11
@Musematt11 Жыл бұрын
I'd prefer that too, but unfortunately the whole reason for the flood of mediocre remakes is that studio/network execs expect easy money with previously successful IPs. At least we somehow got Carpenter's "The Thing", the Karl Urban "Dredd" film, and the current Dune movies.

OH SNAP! I was wondering when you would get to Otherworld. I had watched the original run back in '85, but had no idea of it's heavy syndication. It's wild to see this here today because just the other day I was thinking about the episode where the kids sang old songs from Earth and the people of the new world flipped because they had never heard rock & roll. Weird the way things line up. I gotta say, though, Chopper Squad sounds like a title of a fictional show they would use in another show. Sitcom main star: "You don't recognize her?! She's the actress from Chopper Squad!" Sitcom sidekick: "Oh wow! She got to kiss Butch Deadlift!" Cue laugh track

I am 46 now. I've been absolutely obssesed with Otherworld most of my life because it was one of those shows that I watched as a little kid, but they only aired it once. The internet didn't exist and none of my friends remembered it. I found it again in some forum in the first 2010s, describing the show, and someone provided me some download links, you know... It was one of those times when you think, "holy sht the time has really passed for this crap!" lol. But it still has got its charm to me, like other crapy shows like Logan's Run. PS: the 80's, an era where every show had to have a wild west and/or pop-rock music episode lol.

I was a huge Yakof Smirnoff fan back in the day. And yet I can only remember what I think are bits from two separate episodes. I think you pretty much nailed obscurity this time - the only two shows I remember are OTHERWORLD and DOG AND CAT. OTHERWORLD was a science-fiction show, and at that point in time my then girlfriend, and I watched pretty much everything with science-fiction on television. DOG AND CAT I remember mostly because when I started seeing Kim Basinger show up in other roles, I was like "Her? Her acting stinks!" Also, a friend and I came up with a comedy sketch called "RAT AND WEASEL", based very loosely on the show.

As soon as you said "what a country" I went, oh, the Yakoff Smirnoff vehicle? In my lifetime we've gone from "if it's on tv you watch it" to "I literally could not tell you a single show on network tv today". For real, you could put out an "obscure shows" that's just the current Thursday lineup and I'd be mystified.

Hey Cecil by any chance have you ever come across a TV show about a bald psychic woman set in a post apocalyptic or dystopian future, possibly from the 70s, while researching have you? I caught the end of an episode once when I was younger and can't for the life of me find out what it's called. I originally thought it might have been that Star trek: Second phase until I learned it never got produced. It's been a mystery ever since but figured you'd be the go to guy for something like this.

I do remember What a Country and Other World. Norman Lear tried to make an American version of Mind Your Language before that. It was in the form of a back door pilot on an episode of Diff’rent Strokes.

I can honestly say that I don't recall any of these appearing on New Zealand screens - not even Chopper Squad from our neighbours! 😄

I fondly remember Dog and Cat, it was on Saturday nights after Starsky & Hutch. Loved her souped up VW Beetle!

I will agree with your closing statement, as yes, I am familiar with one of the shows, What A Country, and about it being obscure as well. Only reason I'm familiar with it is because dad had a few episodes on VHS he taped off of TV. So I will say, good job there. 😉 And thank you, did enjoy this.

I was actually expecting Otherworld to show up earlier in the list of shows that was Sci-Fi specific. I remember enjoying it when it aired. Given how big a deal it is to even get a show produced I'm always amazed at how quick networks are to cancel stuff before they even air what they filmed.

Lou Antonio as the half-black half-white alien who wasn't Frank Gorshin, that's like being the guy from Bosom Buddies who wasn't Tom Hanks.

Well, I admit I am not familiar with these particular shows, even if I know some of the actors. I also admit normally there is at least one "Wow, I forgot I watched that!" moment in your usual Forgotten Shows videos that gets me excited, so don't listen to the haters. The whole point is that I forgot I watched Relic Hunter when it was out and was inspired to stream the old episodes, or that I knew that a show was based on a character from the Ultraverse because I read those comics back in the day. That's the joy of this series, so please keep it going and thank you!

I enjoyed this. FYI I knew 4 out of the 5 shows and was a fan of Otherworld. I may go down memory lane soon. I remember some dumb facts about Dog and Cat like Kim's character drove a VW Beetle but she'd put a race car engine in it (I think a Ferari's) so it went really fast. The only one I'd never heard of was the Australian predecessor of Bay Watch.

I saw "What a Country" at the Height of Yakov's Fame (Ben Stiller did a skit about Yakov's Fall from Grace in Pop Culture on his "The Ben Stiller Show") and i READ about "Dog and Cat" in some book about Television series when i was a kid in the 80's
