The most interesting thing about _The Lone Gunmen_ pilot is the idea of flying a plane into the World Trade Center was something writer Frank Spotnitz believed that if it had occurred to them (the writers), the Defense Department would have, too, and therefore have preventative measures in place. Also, the last episode wasn't the cliffhanger. Because Fox is Fox, they aired the cliffhanger finale as the penultimate episode.

One theory I had heard was how alot of these kinds of shows often have actual government personnel involved with the projects (much like how stargate SG1 had active air force members on staff to act as consultants and liaisons with the air force), and what it was possible that they were in contact with someone that might have had more insider knowledge. the idea being that, after 9/11 there a ton of finger pointing. and the warren commission's final report detailed how the clinton administration had been getting a lot of intel of something in the works. that they knew bin laden was determined to finish what he started in 93 (referring to the WTC bombing that had been intended to bring the towers down, but failed) but also getting word that terrorists may be training in flight schools with the intent of crashing planes into landmarks. it talked about how all this intel had been turned over to the bush admin when the change over happened but they sat on it instead of acting. the theory is that their consultant had been aware of some or all of this, and maybe slipped some hints, figuring since the info would have been well over a year old by that point that it was safe enough.

Kind of interesting. Over the years, ever since it was completed, MANY people and groups have threatened to shoot planes into the world trade center. It finally happened. I don't know how clever the writers were using something from real life to give their show ideas.

My favorite failed spin-off will always be Mrs. Columbo, not for the show itself but for the story behind it. For those that never watched Columbo, one of his big character quirks is that he constantly brings up his wife, who we never see. Generally considered one of the greatest detective shows of all time, Columbo was canceled by NBC in 1978, and the year after, they produced Mrs. Columbo, starring a pre-Star Trek Kate Mulgrew as the eponymous Missus. The show was made without any of the original crew's involvement and was slammed by critics and fans to the point that they had hard turned away from her being Columbo's wife and changed the title several times by the time it was canceled. To wrap everything up, when the original Columbo came back on ABC a decade later, the writers took the opportunity to throw some shade at NBC by saying someone was going around "pretending" to be his wife. Fucking ouch.

The baffling thing about the spin-off was that Mulgrew was 30 years younger than Peter Falk, there’s no way she’s the same Mrs. Columbo that the show often talked about.

I LOVED "The Lone Gunmen" but I started to feel it was suffering from what I used to call, "Kolchak's Disease"- the idea that EVERY week, there's a new conspiracy theory. On the TV series, "Kolchak the Night Stalker" people started referring to it as "Kolchak's Monster of the Week". It just got too difficult to suspend that disbelief week after week.
@viljamtheninja
@viljamtheninja Жыл бұрын
I feel like that kind of show might actually do really well today in the streaming era when it's more accepted with non-episodic series, that have storylines that can go on through several seasons rather than be contained in one episode. Maybe don't stretch the conspiracy too far though; looking at Stranger Things, it never really got more exciting than season 1..
@starmnsixty1209
@starmnsixty1209 Жыл бұрын
Kolchak was to have had several more episodes, but various behind the scenes issues curtailed it by three, or four episodes. Kolchak fandom still exists, but was at its peak in the 1990s. The series remains a popular syndicated program.
@BertTurbaville
@BertTurbaville Жыл бұрын
@@starmnsixty1209 It's still a very weak series. People feel differently watching syndicated series than they do watching week after week. Star Trek (TOS) suffered through its own 3rd season before being cancelled, then went NUTS in syndication. Gilligan's Island the same. Most of Kolchak's fandom comes from the two movies, not the series. The series was cheap, ineptly made, and pretty much nonsensical. Half the time you can see Richard Kiel's skin through his poorly made costumes. The get ups were better in "Lost in Space" than in this series. You can't be a reporter working in the same city, week after week, butting heads with your boss over supernatural occurrences resulting from EVERY story- the fact that Vincenzo had his nose rubbed in the supernatural every time Kolchak had a new assignment would lead him to either start taking Carl seriously when he reports (and why didn't Carl EVER reference the OTHER episodes? He never ONCE defends himself by talking about uncovering the werewolf running for President, the coven of witches he discovered and was almost killed by, the Las Vegas Vampire, the Spanish Moss monster...? It's ridiculous.), or firing him for mental problems outright. At one point in the 70s, one of the 3 main networks planned to make "Salem's Lot" a TV series, after the 2 part miniseries did decent enough business. Even King himself shuddered at the possibility.

God I loved the Lone gunman. It was just as entertaining as X-files but in its own unique way. Sucks it only had one season. This episode was basically a time capsule for me. I enjoyed Golden palace as much as Golden girls and loved Empty nest. Thanks for jogging my memory of better times, Cecil. Also, every time I hear of an Australian exclusive DVD boxset I add to my list of things to look out for. I don't even think we even got Baywatch nights aired over here but I think the show was going to relocate to Australia after it ended for a whole new series but got canned at the last moment, and probably resulted in Baywatch nights. Still, I gotta check this show out now that I know it exists. Cheers Cecil, you're a f*cking legend.

Great episode! I forgot about Baywatch Nights... got to rewatch season 2! The Lone Gunman's pilot episode called one of the biggest psy-ops in history. Similar to the book about the Titan that came out years before the Titanic sank.

This is a good reminder, on the topic of the ALF talk show, that ALF at one point got a cartoon prequel series. I actually enjoyed watching that when I saw it.

Lone Gunmen - Loved it! Just The Ten Of Us- Jaime Luner 🔥🔥🔥 Alf had a talk show? Golden Palace - I vaguely remember it. Baywatch Nights - Remember it but never saw it.

I remember Just the 10 of Us, Bu didn’t realize it was a spinoff of Growing Pains.

Just the 10 of Us was a favorite of mine. I met one of the writers once and told him how much I liked it. He laughed and said "You have no taste." I was 15 at the time.

I liked Just The Ten Of Us but after 33 years It’ nothing I’m proud of. They did a meta version of Nightmare On Elm Street back in 1994. Heather Lagenkamp played herself. This show was not mentioned.

Thanks for thisctone. I loved ALF though realize he's not to everyone's liking... I somehow missed his talk show altogether. Thanks also for the look at the paranormal season of Baywatch Nights - it's remarkably little known among fans of spooky tv even now.🧛👻

Another spin off you could talk about in your next video could be Enos. The spinoff from Dukes of Hazzard

To comment about Baywatch Nights from around 13:30: Baywatch Nights was also released on DVD in Germany as well, like most other things that starred The Hoff. With that said, while Baywatch Nights hasn't been released on DVD or BluRay by itself outside of Australia and Germany, AFAIK both Nights and Hawaii (AKA Baywatch seasons 10 and 11) are included in some editions of the complete Baywatch series set. Keyword being "some", basically look for a set that doesn't say "All Nine (9) Seasons" or "Seasons 1-9". It's admittedly incredibly hard to find, and I think the most recent release of the complete series was a limited run $250+ Collector's Edition set that came with a red towel and numerous other collectables that came and went several years ago.

The odd thing is, the DVD cover they used is (at my guess) the German one judging by the Komplett Box and the wording at the bottom.

I guess I'm an abnormal viewer. I loved Baywatch Nights. I watched it when I was a kid. It could be hard to keep up with the syndicated shows because they could be on irregularly sometimes but I sought it out.

In Australia we got the Lone Gunmen at bit later. They had to pull it. Don't remember the exact timing, but in my head, the episode with the plane trashing the building was broadcast about two weeks prior to 9/11 (which would be 11/9 in Aus).
