"Turns out Kids don't want to watch shows about adults." JM Strazinski said he was told the same exact thing when he made the Ghostbusters movie into an animated show. He flexed some writing muscles and made it work.

I was very aware of this attitude from producers, even as a kid. They always pointed to the big hits that had kids in them as proof that kids didn't like shows about adults. It was always a lie. All of my friends wanted to jettison the kid characters from our favorite shows.

Watching cartoons in syndication was wild, because you'd see current shows alongside shows that had been produced 15 years earlier, and being a kid, you would pretty much just take it for granted that they had all been made fresh just for you. I suspect that children these days aren't developing the same breadth of taste and cultural curiosity, because even though they technically have access to a lot more than we did, it's harder for them to watch something old without understanding in advance that it's from a different era and wasn't intended for them in particular.

I feel like they also have too much choice. They can decide to watch whatever their heart desires when they want to watch it. I remember disliking some shows in the middle of the block and facing the decision of "do I watch this show I'm apathetic about or do I go do something else until the show I do like comes on?" It teaches patience and, in a tiny way, that you can't always get what you want.

I was born in 1954, so my Saturday mornings included more variety. In addition to cartoons like _Mighty Mouse_ and reruns of _Quick Draw McGraw,_ we had Live Action shows like _Fury_ and _Sky Kong._ (Fury starred Peter Graves as a respected authority figure, which is what made his appearance in _Airplane!_ as a pilot who would openly hit on boys so much funnier.) We also had puppet shows like _Super Car_ and _Thunderbirds._ (Those were the kind of shows _Team America: World Police_ were parodying.)

I remember The Groovy Ghoulies, probably from when it was syndicated, since 1970 is a bit early for me. I remember Inch High Private Eye existing, but I don't think I ever watched it. I never even heard of the other three. The video mentions cartoons that were based on successful live-action TV series, such as Gilligan's Island and My Favorite Martian. There were quite a few of those. One that I remember was The New Adventures of Batman, from 1977. It was produced by Filmation, and was basically a continuation of the 1960s live-action Batman series, with Adam West and Burt Ward reprising their roles as Batman and Robin. It also includes Bat-girl (though not voiced by Yvonne Craig), and a pint-sized green-skinned imp with magical powers from another dimension named Bat-mite, voiced by Filmation head honcho Lou Scheimer. Bat-Mite is actually a character from the comics, introduced in the late 1950s. He's basically a prototype for Orko from Masters of the Universe, another Filmation product, who was also voiced by Scheimer. A lot of classic Batman villains show up, all voiced by Lennie Weinrib, though Riddler and Scarecrow are missing, since those characters were licensed to Hanna-Barbara for Superfriends, which was running concurrently. Another cartoon based on a live-action show I remember was Houndcats from 1972, produced by DePatie-Freleng Enterprises. It was based on a short-lived action series called Bearcats!, in which Rod Taylor and Dennis Cole played a couple of mercenaries traveling around the southwestern U.S. in 1914 in a Stutz Bearcat, a high-end sports car of the time. DFE apparently thought Bearcats! was going to be a thing, so they made Houndcats, which was also set in 1914 and had five animal secret agents (two cats and three dogs) and a sentient car, who were given assignments for the government by their unseen Chief using devices such as grammaphones and player pianos, that would then self-destruct, Mission: Impossible-style. Oddly, they seemed to be the only anthropomorphic animals in a world full of humans, but nobody ever remarked on this. Each of the five had a specialty: Stutz was the leader/strategist, Mussel Mutt (voiced by Aldo Ray) was strong, Putty Puss (voiced by Joe Besser) was a master of disguise, Rhubarb (voiced by Arte Johnson) was an inventor, and Ding Dog was stupid. Basically, it was a mash-up of Bearcats!, Mission: Impossible, and Wild Wild West, but since Bearcats! flopped and westerns were on their way out anyway, it only lasted 16 episodes before riding off into the sunset of cancellation.

Hey! I meant to write about that in the community post but forgot. Essentially, I was planning on doing that for the last video of the year. Unfortunately, my wife and son got sick, they gave it to me and it set me back about 2 weeks. So I had to pivot and give the Eight Crazy Nights video priority since I had been talking to the director and needed to get it out in December. I'm now planning on Invasion USA for Dec 2024. :)

For one that few people remember, I'd recommend The Smoggies, AKA, Stop the Smoggies. Also, surprised you didn't mention the weird crossover Groovey Ghoulies had with Looney Tunes where a lot of the voices were messed up.

You never got back to me, so I just thought I'd ask one last time if the next episode is going to be Five Forgotten TV Shows --- Post Super Bowl Edition All the way back in Part 16 --- Alien Invasion Shows, I mentioned that we had just found out that a brand new show called "Tracker" was going to premiere after the Super Bowl. So, to recap................................ The post Super Bowl show is the coveted spot all year long for TV shows. It is sometimes reserved for "special" episodes of already successful shows like "All in The Family" (35.4 million viewers), "Third Rock From The Sun" (33.6 million), "The X-Files (29.1 million). "Survivor" ( 2nd season premiere -- 45.3 million, All-Star season premiere ---- 33.5 million ), and don't forget "The One After The Super Bowl" ---- 52.9 million viewers!!!!!!!!!! Yep, back in the 90s, everyone wanted those six people to be their "Friends". When you have the biggest amount of viewers the entire year handed to you on a silver platter, sometimes the network decides to premiere the very first episode of an all new TV show right after the Super Bowl. Sometimes, it obviously works and the show becomes a long-running hit.......... The A-Team (22 million), The (first) Wonder Years (29 million), Airwolf (27.8 million), Homicide: Life on The Street ( 28.1 million), Family Guy ( 22 million), American Dad ( 23 million ), Undercover Boss ( 38.6 million ) When this happens, your show can't fail??? Right??? RIGHT?!?!?!????? The "World" is handed to you on a silver platter, and you still manage to screw it up. Welcome to Five Forgotten Shows ---- Post Super Bowl Edition MacGruder and Loud The series stars John Getz and Kathryn Harrold as married police officers Malcolm MacGruder and Jenny Loud in a Los Angeles Police Department-styled police agency (where strict anti-fraternization policies were in effect). They fought a battle every day to keep it a closely guarded secret from their boss. Despite the pilot airing after the Super Bowl, ABC kept changing its timeslot during the season, and it was canceled after only fifteen episodes. The Last Precinct Batman's Adam West and Ghostbuster's Ernie Hudson co-star in a 45 minute sitcom about a group of misfit police academy rejects. Despite 39 million people watching the pilot (after the Super Bowl), it lasted only eight episodes. Grand Slam John Schneider (Dukes of Hazzard) and Paul Rodriguez are bounty hunters in San Diego. 30.7 million people watched the pilot. Eight episodes were filmed, but it was canceled after only six were aired. The Good Life a family sitcom starring John Caponera as the patriarch and a very young Drew Carey as his "best bud". 23 million viewers watched the pilot. It was canceled after 13 episodes, and Drew went on the following year to his own sitcom, and we all know what happened after that. Extreme James Brolin starred in an action/adventure show about a search and rescue team which operated in the Rocky Mountains. 22.5 million viewers watched the pilot. Thirteen episodes were filmed, but only seven aired before cancellation. Let's find out if "Tracker" is going to become a long-running show like "The A-Team" or "The Wonder Years", or a forgettable flop like "Grand Slam" and "The Last Precinct". Stay tuned.

Never watched _Pole Position,_ but I always liked the theme song. And I revisit the song every now and then here on KZbin. (Yes, I was familiar with the arcade game as well). I was also familiar with _The Groovie Ghoulies,_ catching an episode here and there.

I remember Pole Position. I used to watch that one all the time and almost always had that catchy theme song stuck in my head.
