I used the black (blink) effect during my last photographic trip and it advanced my photographic skills incredibly. Especially when I am indoors and not using a flash to get some outdoor environment included in my image. It is well worth the time to include this technique for a superior image. Thank you so much for your valuable explanation.

Thanks for this video, I turned the Highlight Alert on for Landscape but forgot how I did it, it was from another of your videos. Even though I’ve had my XT3 a couple of years I still have no clue with with half the settings so this video was a God send. Yes the alert does work great but you are so right about how annoying it gets.

Thanks again Chris for another helpful video. I must admit I use the exposure indicator and then check the histogram and adjust accordingly. There is one thing I do that you didn't mention and that is sometimes I just change to bracketing which is always set on exposure bracketing on my xt3. Set it on five or three and just take the shot with different exposures, usually one is correct or I can put two together in post if I am on a tripod. Using exposure bracketing will usually ensure that one , you don't miss the shot , and two you get an exposure that is correct or close enough that you can adjust to be correct.

A very good point around 7:30. The histogram applies to your JPEG settings, the film simulation, etc. Another reason to shoot RAW. If you shoot in both RAW and JPEG then here's a pro tip: you can expose to the right slightly past pure white, as RAW is more forgiving

Just a tip for the last advice. Tell about the artistic result of the exposure! a low key photo will certainly look underexposed and a high key photo truly overexposed. In this caste the photographer is the one who needs to know that the highlight or lowlight alert is of little value as this is the camera view of the photo for a "average" exposure, not the one the photographer has in mind. Excellent video as usual, thanks Chris !

I’ve always been a manual exposure person but I have to say since moving from Nikon to Fuji I’m actually using two of the three corners of the exposure triangle in auto. I’ll hold on to aperture since that’s almost akin to composition but it’s nice to know I can hand over controls to my camera in a rushed or quickly changing light situation and feel reasonably ok. I find dialing down the exposure compensation 2/3 a stop does a pretty good job protecting highlights depending the metering, either spot or center weight average.

QUESTION: But first a compliment! Great video, great channel. Thank you! I always set my zebra to about 95%, therefore i don’t have any blowouts. You set your zebra to 70%? Is that only for skin tones? Adjust your exposure to where the 70% zebra disappears and that’s correct exposure for most skin tones? Buckets of gratitude.

That's a good topic Chris, I have been exploring a bit of it on my own time as well. I found what I rely on most of the time is the RGB histogram because it also flashes the highlight warning on/off and it's all toggled with one touch or button on/off once you map it. I generally stay away from the small histogram shown in the EVF because most EVFs are OLED and static elements like that histogram with a slight white background to it, tend to show burn in over time, and then after you turn it off, you will see a dim square on your EVF where the histogram was. For the same reason I disabled the vertical "scale" exposure meter shown on the left side of the EVF, and prefer to use the digit value at the bottom for metering. Speaking of the exposure meter, it's decent in most situations (leaving certain metering modes aside of course), however there is one situation where I cannot and won't rely on it, and that is shooting night shots. What I discovered is that if I were to expose a night scene on the street "properly" at "0", what I ended up with is a way blown out version of what I saw with my own eye. As you said very wisely, it's only the camera's opinion, man :D I for one prefer to see night shots the way I gauge them with my naked eye, even if they are two or three stops underexposed according to the camera haha. Oh and on that note, it reminds me of Chelsea Northrup (another channel) complaining about the X-T4 not exposing her husband's face properly with an f/1.2 lens at noon, under a tree. Provided you are the photographer, take over.

Thank you for the video. I recently switched from Nikon to Fuji and I'm still not 100% into Fuji's exposure. Coming from Nikon (for me) it's so hard to retain details in the highlights. Especially in landscape photos when you look at things in the distance of your scenery. Nikon had an option called (D-Lightning) which helped to get more details - with Fuji I'm still struggling a bit. Feeling like an amateur... but I won't give up :)

Nicely done video, Chris. One detail that might be worth adding is *why* you set your zebra level the way you do. If you set it to 95 or 100, you can use them like the blinkies we are all used to when we shoot stills. Why do you set yours to 60-70? I would guess it is to correctly expose your caucasian skin. 60 is considered a good setting for this purpose. Also, some LUTs are designed for footage with mid-tones falling in a certain region so you can set your zebras to that number and shoot a gray card at the beginning, adjusting your exposure until you see zebras on the gray card. (That said, sometimes a LUT wants mid-tones below 50% which is the limit on Fuji cameras.) It is unclear why Fuji offers left and right facing zebras in their cameras. Most cameras I've used that offer this option allow the user to have two different zebra settings. This adds flexibility since you can check for properly exposed skin (or LUT) while also ensuring you are not exceeding your upper limit for whites.
@pal2tech
@pal2tech 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Tim!!! Thanks man!! Yeah, I totally blew it on this video by not going into detail on the ZEBRA settings more. Yep, the 60 was for caucasian skin for sure. But I should have gone with an overview of all the shooting options on this and why you set it the way you do. Maybe I'll pull that for a future Fast Friday. I appreciate the great feedback!!!! 👍

I subscribed to your channel last week and it clinched my decision: Fuji X-T4 is on order! Thank you! Hope you have time for 2 quick questions: 1. What is that red button on your shutter release for?! 2. I shoot in RAW. I read on FujiFrame.com: "Turn on Fuji’s Natural Live View when Exposing to the Right (ETTR). If you do, in-camera exposure tools will closer resemble the raw output." Do you agree that this strategy may be helpful, or does it compromise other factors? Thanks again for all you do!
