Size truly is the only negative...just makes the trail a bit more of a challenge. More benefits IMO. With regards to build cost, the large trucks is a cheaper build cost as everything is HD. Add-a-leaf, air bags to my coils and 295s in my 18s, Leer toper off FBM, my was relatively cheap to build. I even used a 2" receiver load carrier (Harbor Freight) for my Jerry cans when in the up position. My goal was not to go crazy on the $$. BTW, just put in the new Wildpeak AT4w, DANG...love them! It has taken me over 5 years to build. With a roof top rent, a second amendment box on top, sleeping quarter for 2 inside, portable toilet for the misses, portable shower (rinsekit), 2000 watt inverter, 12 gallons of water on board, full set of tools, food for 14 plus days, 200 watts solar, 100 ah lithium battery, (plus 2 marine batteries for my truck)....yeah, my rig is built. I refused the beed lock wheels, ARB front bumper etc....as you mentioned the weight and for me the cost. A good Bull bar for deer strikes and my light bar? Why not 😅 Anywhoo...using a F250/2500 platform is the bomb. The amount of dough to make a Tacoma work and it cannot tow worth the crap. I have a lifted Wolf Pup 17jg, I been watching a lot of Aussie 'overlanding' stuff. Same deal, $120k for an off road RV, stupid. Larger tires and air down, done 😅😅😅 yeah, I'm cheap. 1200 watts of solar and 600 ah lithium batteries, boon docking with an RV is sweet. All the best brother. Thanks for the info.

For me the biggest thing is I already own a 3500 Cummins and don’t have a “dedicated” overland rig like a jeep, Cherokee or something like that. It’s cheaper to just build onto my truck rather than get another one.

It’s cheaper to use your diesel to pull a dedicated trail rig. Built Toyota buggies can be found for around $10k. That’s cheaper than the Carli lift.

I overland a 2002 suburban z71 on 37s, I defenatly stick out in the crowd, as you've said I've taken that thing in places it just shouldn't have been 😂 but after owning it and learning by experiencing it I love it, I'm a family of 6 so I was kinda limited on vehicle type, the tahoe has no space in the cargo area so that left me with the suburban with rear end locker

Great video! I agree with everything. We travel with a 10 year old and 2 dogs sometimes. So having the full size Tahoe is great so we can bring lots of comforts but, when we were down in Overland the Red weight and size limited us quite a bit.

Great video. I was torn knowing we are a growing family of four. But watching the full side rigs 3 point turn over the switchbacks of the abyss in Moab was all I needed to know. Love my midsize and as a former backpacker I love the struggle to keep it minimal as you mentioned.

Maintenance parts like air filters, oil filters, fuel filters, and amount of oil needed for oil changes is also many many more times expensive for diesel trucks than midsized gas trucks and that's something you have to pay every few months or so.

I run a surplus military hmmwv, with an off road camper built on a m1102 trailer. I left ( repainted) the flat desert tan. Cause like you said, sometimes you have to jam it down a trail!! the paint is incredibly easy to touch up! Biggest reason i run the humvee, is cost savings. I finished my truck for 25,000 . Thats cheap! especially with rod hall off road racing shocks! (They came with it).

@Rebel Outdoors yeah there are plenty of Jeep sized trails in the Manistee National Forest but finding anything for our size trucks can be tricky. More than a few times I've had to back my RAM out of a trail because I hit a spot to small to pass.

I just left a 4 door Rubicon myself and I would say the biggest issues for me were the road noise and ride comfort. Long road trips were miserable and caused me to explore far less often then I would have liked. My new rig is a 2500 and I am loving how quiet and comfortable it is. It’s a complete game changer for long road trips.

So glad i found your channel! I've been debating on a jeep gladiator and a ram 2500, diesel for both. Have you run into any trails that were just too small for your 2500? I started off certain i wanted the gladiator but after a couple videos of moose im really considering a ram. I can get into nicer used ram for the same price as a base gladiator too.

Surprised you didn’t mention the extra cost of diesel…yeah, I miss the torque in my 6.4 2500, but at $1.50/gallon extra (plus DEF), driving a modern diesel doesn’t end up being a whole lot cheaper than a full-size or an HD truck.

When I fueled up yesterday they were only 50 cents apart. Slowly getting closer, sure was bad the last few years. Most of these smaller turbo engines require premium which is currently about the same price. Lets see what next month brings, lol

I have a 6.6L Duramax (2500). My wife bought a 3.0L Duramax in the Silverado 1500 for her business. She tows a small (4k lbs) trailer. I really like the 3.0L Duramax. Seems like a great compromise. All the torque and plenty of HP. Fuel tanks size is 22 gal compared to 36 gal on my LTZ, but you can cure that with an auxiliary tank. Her gas mileage is much better than mine. I'm intrigued by these midsize trucks with diesels. I'm disappointed that Chevy stopped putting them in the Colorado.

I think people who build overland rigs vs state to state tow rigs should consider 12 n previous year rams, easy to delete the egr n no def. My 2012 as far as versatility n cost has had a cheaper starting point vs the newer trucks n even new jeeps I've seen
