This is a very nice lesson. This approach to the left hand is really sweet and stands out from what I have seen so far on your competition! Awesome, Kaitlyn! What I try to do on a quite regular basis is switching the roles of left and right hand. But I am not certain if this really helps with exercising the left hand properly.

Kaitlyn, from your experience, would I be correct that in most of the popular songs you use as examples of often-used chord progressions that the chords and melody tended to precede and drive the eventual lyrics? In other words, do most composers start with a musical idea (chords, rhythm, melody) followed by the lyrics being locked down? I have seen videos of the Beatles in the studio with McCartney playing chords that we all recognize while drifting back and worth between singing the lyrics that we would come to know and singing "da-da-da" in places he did not yet know what he wanted to say. Similarly, when Stephen Schwartz acted as both composer and lyricist for Wicked, would you tend to think that he started with the music for Defying Gravity and that drove what we would eventually hear Elphaba sing? I seek your guidance on "which should come first, music or lyrics", because I have challenged myself to find chords and a melody that works with a poem. As a total novice, I find it extremely difficult to get off the ground when the lyrics are already etched in stone.

This video is very helpful. Thank you. I am taking written notes on it to print out since I cannot conveniently get my computer screen close enough to the piano. However, taking written notes while viewing the video is also helpful, not an inconvenience. It improves my ability to remember the instructions and gives me hard copy that I can consult any time, anywhere!

Amazing. About the last Exercise, I think there is another beautiful option which is yo use the ninth instead or the octave (1-5-9) of the dominant (1-5-7/Maj7, in a case of 7/Maj7 Chords in the chord progression)

Enjoy your lesson. I guess now that I am much older and less rambunctious. I can sit still and practice more often. Thank you for making it easy to understand. Now if only I can get my gorilla hands too stop hit the wrong keys. (Fat fingers and short) The 4 chord work for me. Thanks again and have a blessed week, 🙏🙏🙏
