Woow, I've never seen anyone leaving their kids outside in a stroller alone in the Czech Republic. However, as for the Easter whipping, there should also be said that the women are usually waiting for that and that it's only a symbolical act. Noone's whipping someone bloody and even the women themselves believe that it keeps them young and fresh. It's a silly tradition nonetheless.

@@DreamPrague On the other hand, especially young boys really take the opportunity to "legally" beat the girls, and they do it really properly :-D. It should also be said that many women, especially in the cities (incl. me) absolutely hate this tradition and find it quite stupid - and some men too:-D. Every American I met is truly shocked by it, that's true :-)

@@Tangerinka410 I mean, in the old days, it used to be a good way how to tell your crush that you like him. Girls would giveaway colored eggs and if you'd get a red one, that ment she likes you. And as the "whipping" should be only symbolical, if someone really overdoes it, you know he isn't a relationship material (and you probably don't open the doors for him next time).

We have an infant. It is recommended by doctors to leave him in a stroller on a balcony. Even when it is snowing. Just keep an eye on him and check if he is not cold.

I live here and saw it only once. The mother was sitting having coffee with a view of the baby outside. Maybe this is a historic tradition that is now dying :)

Here is some interesting things about our Czech Republic: Do you know, sugar cubes are from Czechia? Czechia is one of the best countries in the hokey. Do you think, nano technology is from USA, China, or some this state with good technology? No, nano techology is too from Czechia. Czechia is in central europe, so, we dont have sea? Nope, we have sea. We own piece of shipyard and sea in Germany. Do you know, Prague Castle is the biggest castle complex on the world? From Czechia is famous composer Bedřich Smetana. One of is symphony: New world symphony; was played in television when Armstrong stand on moon. Czechia is famous for best beer on the world. Czechia is one of the biggest consumer of poppy. Poppy cakes is traditional food, mainly on countrysides. Strong explosive called Semtex is from Czechia. In the second world war was Prague one of the least damaged city, because Hitler wanted to make Prague the cultural center of Europe.

I would like to explain right here. What is the tradition "pomlázka" 1.) It is a truly old tradition associated with Easter, but mainly with the celebration of spring. 2.) This is a caroling ritual something like the US "Halloween", but mostly designed for teenagers and adults. It serves to acquaint people more closely (violence is not present here). Word comes from "pomladit" ( to make young) and „mlází“ (a newly grown stick) , the young of the stick "pomlázka" is simbolically transferred to the woman. 3.) A woman always agrees to practice ritual. If you experienced a "pomlázku" in Prague probably had nothing to do with tradition. In tradition, Men do rituals and transmits a rhyme or chant. Subsequently, the woman determines what reward a man deserves according to how she feels and treated her. 4.) Next, the woman presents gifts. Decorated eggs symbol of life and abundance. And puts a ribbon on the man's "pomlázku" , the color of the ribbon sometimes reflects what a woman feels to a man. such a first hint in public ;-) . subsequently men drink one shot of alcohol which a woman spills mostly an older woman from a caroling house. 5.) A man must knit a "pomlázka" by hand, not buy it. A woman must decorate the gifts handwritten, not buy them. For these reasons, in large cities you will not encounter the traditional ritual. Believe that in smaller towns and villages where people know each other, this ritual celebrates in joy. I hope everyone understands that they can't come to our country and whip women, even on this day. That would be criminal. We are a country of tradition, in no way violence. excuse my non-English :-)

Czech Republic is NOT only Prague! You are talking only about Prague. There are more beautiful places and cities, not so crowded, not so expensive and also with many historical monumens. And finaly as a Czech I can say people living in Prague are far different from other (normal) people living in the Czech Republic 😃 What you can see in Prague is not typical Czech Republic 😉

I don't understand why are people still speaking about this, do you think ships can float only on sea? Czech Republic is known for old river boating tradition and ofcourse ahoj comes from Austrian-Hungary times where Czech people were sailors in Austrian fleet because we had mechanics and people who can operate steam ships so Czechs were on ships very often. We already had steam river connection between cities when other countries were experimenting with that so use Czechs for new steam ships was logical. There were also Croatians and such nations with experiences from sea so in combination with Czech steam engine specialits it worked good I guess.

Neznám nikoho kdo by nechal svoje dítě před restaurací (bydlím v Praze) tohle bych úplně nedávala jako příklad. Myslím že kdyby to někdo nahlásil, taky by se to řešilo. A graffiti nejsou legální. Jsou speciální místa kde to je legální. Ale jinak ne, hrozí pokuta atp. Prostituce je nelegální, ale policie to neřeší.

Dovolím si oponovat, prostituce v ČR nelegální není, nicméně není ani legální, prostě je ve vakuu. Neexistuje žádná legislativa, která by prostituci zakazovala, proto policisté za prostituci nikoho zatknout nemohou ani jej nemohou pokutovat. Kde není zákaz nemůže být ani trest. Jediné, co upravuje prostituci nebo spíše jen její provádění v této zemi jsou obecní vyhlášky, kde ti obec může zakázat provádět prostituci na určitém veřejném území (aby se třeba prostitutka nabízela své služby u silnice atd.) nicméně obec nemůže prostitutce zakázat si klienta pozvat do privátu nebo hotelu čili nemůže zakázat prostituci jako takovou. Trestné je až to, když ty jako osoba nabízíš lidem služby jiných prostitutek, tedy je paseš, nebo jsi majitel escort služeb a samozřejmě taky bordelů. Myslím, že se tomu říká kuplířství a za to už jdeš do vězení natvrdo . Proti těmto lidem policisté nezasahují často jednoduše proto, že je to hluboké podsvětí a to jako řadoví policista řešit opravdu nechceš.

Speaking as a Czech I wouldn’t be so sure about that leaving your child outside on the street in a stroller. I have never seen anyone doing that in Prague or outside. It is more likely to see a dog waiting for his owner outside a shop or a pub.

I guess it exists at least one more thing. In Czech Republic you can leave your childern under 15 alone at home without to call any nanny. It's not a criminal act at all but you keep your full responsibility for all things that can happen. The kids do something bad or something happens to them. (Fire, injury, etc.)

Hi Rizek. When I was a kid, (much younger than 15) my parents would leave me to babysit my younger brothers and sister. But I think Americans in this day and age wouldn't do it - everyone's afraid to leave their children for a second!

Hi Jen! Another great video :) I just would like to extend a bit the part about Easter tradition. I absolutely understand how sort of savage it can appear to any observer from different part of the world :) But here's a bit deeper connection with our roots, and even a lot of Czechs and Slovaks doesn't realise that today. The tradition goes hundereds years back to pagan times, when your life goal was not nice car and well paid job, but to have a babies and therefore a family that have better chance to survive and help each other. The maternity was highly celebrated and praised. So, the other thing that should be said is that the whipping part should be gentle and purely symbolic, because that's what Easter is all about. Easter was there, as we all know :), way before christians and was celebrated as the spring fest, where everything comes to life after the winter. And "pomlázka" (or mrskačka or žíla if you are Moravian) is supposed to be made of young and green twigs full of spring sap and by the "hiting" your loved one with this multiplied twigs you were trying to make the power of green twigs go over to your wife or other women, to sort of bless them with that green power :) And obviously the hits are pointed to their back and pelvis area, because of the wish that you can become a healhy mother with a healthy child :) God I really hope it makes sense :D And even when traditional reward for that ritual really is a shot of moonshine in these days :D more traditional reward is an decorated egg, a symbol of a new life. So, even if most of the people seems to be focusing on the beating part, it's a bit more interesting than that :)

1) At 18 years old I still haven't seen a stroller with a baby in it outside of the restaurant while parents were having lunch 2) Easter is a Czech tradition, which is, to be fair, pretty old, but still. And it's not like you beat up a woman... 3) No comment there, yes, we can drink outside CZE-USA 1:0 4) I don't know why you chose Lennon wall, which doesn't represent city's view of graffiti, since it was a unique project in Czech Republic. What we have though are so called free walls, where you can paint graffiti legally, because it's usually some unused building or wall surrounding an unused building hidden away from people who don't seek it. It's done this way to keep people from painting graffiti in the city and damaging property 5) Again, no comment here. I get that it's for the sake of the joke that you generalise, but still kinda makes me mad 😂

In Denmark, it is pretty normal to leave the stroller with baby in front of the restaurant. My daughter-in-law left my granddaughter in stroller just across the street because there was shade over there. And we all went to the restaurant.

Dream Prague “živnostník”. is someone(a person) who is working somehow like a “freelancer” or is running his business. however you said “živnostenský” which can be used only together with “živnostenský list”. No me to pripada ze oni jsou divní. Tradice s poukázkou vůbec nevysvetlila. A zbytek je dobře jak je. Ono je toho mnohem víc jako zavirani parků při západu slunka. Zákaz vstupu do lesu. Jenom na vyznačenem místě. Zákaz taboraku, kde ti na hlavou létají helikoptéry a monitorují situaci. Převoz třeba potravin i s alkoholem v automobilu někde v kabině. Pouze v oddelenem zavazadlovém prostoru. A to nemluvím o CRT ve školách a celkovém potírání křesťanů.. A mnohem víc.. Radši nebudu pokračovat protože to ani nemá cenu..

One important thing concerning that easter tradition... it is very old tradition, which originates from time before christianity came here. When our forefathers have their own religion and traditions. The pomlazka is made of young twigs The fresh new young twigs that growth the same spring. And the original form of that tradition was a spring ritual. The whiping wasn't meant to be the actual whiping with the force... But through the act of whiping with thous young and flexibel twigs entwined together to pass on the girls the youth, freshness, health of those twigs. When the christianity came, the tradition of that ritual merged with other easter things. Most people today have no idea of the original meaning and all what is in their minds... is the wiping. But the original meaning of it is quite spiritual. As for the "reward"... it was meant to be a decorated egg. Kraslice. The alcohol involvement was just... well... to show how good was the last harvest. And with a wish for the next one to be taht good as well. But as before... in these days... in their minds is just the alcohol. At first figuratively, then literally.

Don't know if someone already mentioned it, cuz I'm kinda late, buut since you have been living in Prague for a long time you noticed we have a bit of a graffiti/tagging problem - used to be much worse. Prague is a city that doesen't want to supress artists, so there are many places you can make legal graffiti art! "The legal graffiti walls" is what we call them. It's usually bridges, concrete walls around train tracks, stuff like that. Also the cities in CR actually value graffiti art - you can go ahead and submit a project to a local town hall. If it is approved, the city will pay for the paint in exchange for the free work. I am currently working on a bus stop in a city near Prague. The artist is allowed to sign their work and just be proud of their art :))

I've been to US for work for a bit and i had a huge cultural shock. Apparently it's like "illegal" to just walk there. Apparently Americans just don't walk. Like at all and if you do it's like weird. Also there is nowhere to walk either. Everything is private property and people take their private property waaaay too seriously. Your only choices are park the size of a Barbie pool that is if you can even find any or alongside the road but THAT'S WEIRD and suspicious apparently. I kid you not a police car stopped by me and the officer asked me what I'm doing here where am i going and i was like i just wanted to go for a walk T^T I don't think he got it because he checked all my papers carefully, insisted to take me back to my place and cautioned me not to walk around alone. It was the most bizarre experience of my life.

I am from the Midwest in U.S. People here walk alot, and in all weather. There are many trails and walkpaths not far from roadways. Yes, some people walk beside the roads when there are no sidewalks. I saw that in Czech Republic too when we were traveling at the edge of cities or in the countryside. I've heard jokes about how people don't walk in California. Is that where you were visiting? I'll have to stay away from there too. Sorry you had a bad experience when you were trying to enjoy the outdoors on foot.

Where I stayed in the States (the North East of metro Denver), many years ago, I would have to drive 20 miles to any place actually worth of taking a stroll. At first, I tried to walk a bit around the residential area where I lived. Nobody stopped me, but it did feel awkward, and also quite pointless, as a 10-minute walk would only get me to another street looking exactly the same like ours. There was one path along a creek. I tried that one once. After a few hundred meters, I noticed some shack in the bushes in the distance, with two loose dogs nearby watching me curiously. I preferred to turn back. Soon, I gave up such attempts at walking around, and I would “go for a ride” instead, like a good American would. Also, during my first months there, if I parked at one store and there were other stores in the area, I would try to walk to the other stores, even across an intersection. Eventually, I would give this folly up too, and I would just drive from one store to the next, even just across the same parking lot, like everyone else would. Needless to say, I gained 9 kg in my six months there…

One time when i wanted to go on a trip to Birmingham by bus but it was so late i had to abandon the trip altogether. Afterward a lady in a grocery laughed at me and told me it's normal. Hi Jen, I saw some other videos of yours and have to say you're really awesome at grasping the Czech culture, language and all. Seriously, the language...you're great at it! Just make sure you avoid spreading misconceptions about the local culture. Like: A) beating women. No, you can't. Easter Monday whipping has to be painless and only of symbolic nature. And it doean't have any punishing motive. Please put it into proper context. B) Prostitution. Yes, it's great that Czechia has no law against being a prostitute, it's only a crime to be a pimp. Makes sense too, you can sell yourself but you can't sell others. Freedom at its purest. But there is still no opportunity to make it a legal job which covers tour social insurance etc. True what you say about the Pirate party trying to change that, though. C) Graffiti. Yes, tou can tag the Lennon Wall, but if you try to tag a random highway bridge on the outskirts of Prague, you might end up being beaten up by the cops in the bushes by the road until you confess and then being sentenced to some community work or you do a little time behind bars. Yeah, been there. So don't encourage foreigners to go and try without studying the local system. Other than that, great job and please keep doing it!

If you look closely, these are zones with a higher incidence of problems related to alcohol, playfields for children and some public transport stations. However as long, as your drinking is NOT accompanied with shouting as loud as you humanly can, probably no one would care and vice versa - would you be too loud, Police will go after you even without seeing you emptying a bottle...

There are already quite many spots, where You can do legal grafitti. :) For example, check Parukářka park near Olšanské náměstí... Many new artworks are created there every week. It is also interesting, because the park is basically sat on the top of a war bunker and the grafitti artists paint on the concrete wals of the bunker that are peaking out from the grass. :)

V Česku se taky nesmí pít na veřejnosti, ale nějak se to tu spíš neřeší. Záleží na místě, třeba na Kampě a v Riegrových sadech se dá sednout s pivem na lavičce, taky záleží na policistovi. Ještě jsem teda neslyšela, že by někoho pokutovali, ale stát se to klidně může. Je to stejný jako s trávou a prostitutkama. Je to zakázaný, ale prostě se to přehlíží.

Nová vyhláška, který by mohla začít platit na začátku příštího roku, přinese dvě hlavní změny. Tou první je fakt, že zákaz alkoholu se má nově týkat celé Pražské památkové rezervace, tedy celého území Prahy 1, ale i některých oblastí dalších městských částí. Dosavadní vyhláška obsahuje pouze výčet jednotlivých ulic, kde se alkoholické nápoje nesmí požívat. To je ale podle zastupitelů pro lidi matoucí a problémy s užíváním alkoholu to pouze přesouvá do okolních ulic, kde zákaz neplatí. Stačí v ruce držet otevřenou lahev. Nevadí, že jste nepili Druhou změnou je skutečnost, že nově bude pro udělení pokuty stačit, aby hříšníka policisté nachytali s otevřenou lahví, či jinou nádobou obsahující alkoholický nápoj, třeba kelímkem plným piva. Doteď museli policisté na pijana narazit přímo při požívání nápoje, nebo alespoň získat svědky, kteří by potvrdili, že se napil. Takovým nešťastníkům navíc hrozí mnohem vyšší pokuta než kdy dřív díky novele přestupkového zákona, která začala platit v červenci. „Strážníci budou moci v rámci příkazu na místě uložit pokutu do výše 10 tisíc korun,“ uvedla Irena Seifertová, mluvčí pražské městské policie. V případě postoupení přestupku do správního řízení budou mít úředníci dokonce možnost uložit sankci až 100 tisíc korun. Konečná výše pokuty záleží na posouzení strážníků, kteří mohou situaci řešit jen domluvou. Před novelou zákona se přitom pokuta mohla na místě vyšplhat jen do výše 5 tisíc korun, ve správním řízení pak hrozila sankce 30 tisíc korun.

Prague is great but the historical center is so uncomfortable place to live. Overcrowded streets are one thing but causing a mess by drinking in the public, leaving broken glasses in the path and shouting and not just occasionally - every day, every night... That causes emigration of locals from the area to further areas. If left unnoticed the effect may unintentionally create an artificial "Disney land" ghost town in the center while leaving the "real" city outside. I'm glad that they are doing something about it. :)

to express yourself … there is a loooong area on tram line 17 from behind the Barrandovský bridge to Modřany where you can legally spray on the walls and stops being part of this tram route… Its a few kilometers long area.. The next one also in a hearth of Prague is the tunel walls and walls connecting the tunel around the tram track under "Magistrála" opposite of ministery of agriculture and Těšnov Park - they decided to legalise it because its way cheaper than to re-paint the walls everyday..

Interesting thing - leaving kids outside in a stroller (even at home, for example on a terrace or on a balcony) is recommended by doctors and CZ has very low infant mortality rate compared to the EU or the rest of the world - lower than Austria, Germany, or even Switzerland or Denmark. USA has almost double the infant mortality rate of CZ.

The funny thing about the prams in front of shops. My father's earliest memory (he was born in 1932 in Cz), was being kidnapped while he was left in front of the shop while his mother went in. He was not in the pram but his younger sister was and he was standing by it, he might have been 2 or so, but a man took him by the hand and led him away. He of course made a scene and tried to cling to railings but eventually the man picked him up and carried him to the train station in Tabor. The man was well dressed and met a woman in a flower dress. However, my dad made a scene and kept crying the woman boarded the train and eventually the man got on just before the train started up and so he was left on the middle of the platform. He was taken by the workers there and eventually his mother sent out her network of relatives and found him - so his memory after that was a rope that was tied to him and his sister's pram. Regarding the Easter tradition of a willow switch to beat the girls, the boys would chase the girls and try to hit them with the switch and the girls would have to give them an egg. That's how I remember it as a kid. Thanks for the video.

my mom told me a fun story. When it was still comunism here in CR and her sister had her first baby at age 20 (that was kinda late back in the days anyway) they didn't know pretty much how to take care of a baby, they were still children themselves, figuring things out, their parents were helping them. Anyway they left the stroller outside of grocery store and then came home and noticed they forget the stroller with the baby (my cousin) infront of the grocery store.... well now we all laugh about it

Regarding the leaving the baby outside practice, is that really common place in Prague? I lived in Morava for five years and I saw this all the time. But I do not recall ever seeing this in Prague and I was there fairly often. I assumed it was the higher crime rate in Prague as opposed to the more rural areas like where I lived. But yeah being from NYC when I first observed this I was startled.

Leaving the strollers outside is common however usually in front of a big window where the parents can watch the baby, I'd like to give a few reasons why this is normal 1. Czech is one of the most peaceful countries in the world 2nd. The strollers are big and usually cause havoc if you were to bring them inside 🤷‍♀️

Velice zavádějící video. Nejsem naivní, za spoustu věcí si můžeme sami, a některé tradice jako Pomlázka vypadají dost jinak na venkově, než zmutovaná městská forma. Ale dnes je normální podávat informace cool, a bez celého kontextu, jinak by nebyly lajky. Trapné od vás je ve videu lákat lidi psát na Lennonovu zeď, když jsou tady iniciativy, aby se to vůbec nedělo. Než byla zeď nabílena před pár roky, tak symbolizovala něco, co někdo, kdo nežil v komunismu nepochopí. A pokud žil, a nechápe tu symboliku, tak je ignorant nebo komunista. Praha umírá pod nájezdy turistů, které se kvůli super službě Airbnb nedají regulovat. Tuny močících ožralců, kterým je jedno, co dělají, přišli si tu přece užít rozlučku se svobodou a je jedno, že v domě, kde si pronajali byt bydlí i jiní lidé, kteří ráno vstávají do práce. Proč o tomhle neuděláte video? Trochu edukace pro zahraniční návštěvníky? Víc cool je udělat video o tom, jak si můžete zadarmo popsat zeď - bez kontextu. Pathetic.

2:00 We (Czechs) don't usually leave kids like that (out on the street). Most of us are very worried about the child's safety. I live in Brno, which is not that big, but it's the second. My sister lives in Prague. Would by interesting to ask her, but she doesn't live exactly in the city center. She lives in Letnany.
