My father starts each day with a clean shave and a spray of polo green. In my youth I found it odd for a man to do this even on a Saturday filled with yard work, but that was his routine. When I was 14 he gifted me a bottle of nautica cologne at Christmas. I gave myself a few sprays the morning we returned to school after holiday break. It only took until mid-morning for a female classmate to say “you smell nice”. I have used cologne daily ever since. A shower, clean shave, and cologne sets me on my way.

I thought of you this week as my wife and I binge-watched the Inspector Alleyn Mysteries from the early '90s,. I told my wife, "I'd love to hear what The Chap's Guide would say" about the style of the inspector, portrayed by Patrick Malahide. We were impressed by his wardrobe, the "city" one with dark Savile Row suits, and the one for the "country," heavy on tweeds. The only discordant note I saw was the much-too-white (in my opinion) trench coat he wore in a couple of the final episodes. It just goes to show the impact of your channel that we noticed any of this. Keep up the good work.

I have been obsessed with cologne/aftershave/EDT since i bought a small gift set of Givenchy Gentleman from a chemists when I was 15 years old. I then went on to Drakkar Noir and Kouros and would wear it at secondary school. I'm 52 years old now, and I have a passion for the old traditional stuff - Geo Trumper, Taylor of Old Bond Street, and Pinaud Clubman. Not to mention my other obsession with shaving creams and soaps!

In my youth I wore cologne just on special occassions. I liked Aramis and Bermuda Spice, which on my McDonalds paycheck was a precious commodity. Lately in my older age I enjoy wearing cologne for myself, I just like the small of it, I think if I like it, it probably atleast is not offensive. I've had a few complements and no one has complained yet.

Another great topic,and great choices.Ah,King Kouros,I wore some today.I lam very fond of Antaeus as well.Alain Delon Plus is very similiar,perhaps a bit richer. Vintage Ceasar's Legendary Man,or vintage Tsar,by Cleef and Arpel,is wonderful too,if you can find it,both are very clean, great morning/spring scents.There is a universal malaise these days regarding dress and grooming,but I was raised a certain way,and too old to change now,besides,I enjoy the ritual.Thanks again for another inspiring chat

Great topic Ash! I was part of that 85% until early last year started to build a new collection. What I enjoy the most about wearing fragrance is how easy it is to strike a conversation with strangers and meeting new people. Receiving compliments is great, specially when they come from ladies. My signature scent is Givenchy Gentleman Boisee, and my old school scent is Herrera for Men (1991) from Carolina Herrera, which was my first ever fragrance when I was 14 years old. Cheers from Canada!

Eyes down look in for a Chap's Guide marathon. 2 weeks to catch up on. 6 videos and the Maastricht trip... "Those heady Miami Vice days" 😂😂😂 I remember them well😂😂😂 I'm still not one for fragrance. It's never really been a thing for me and now at 55 I see less need to start now. I have watched all of you fragrance videos and view them as a complete outsider. That said, I have just ordered some Eucrist shaving soap, let's see how it goes eh. On to the next video on Bowties 🫡

I would add the tactility of the bottle is very important. Chanel, Dunhill, and Dior are very aware how the materials, closures, and bottle heft have a sensorial impact. I suspect Ash could close his eyes and identify a large portion of his fragrance collection simply by touch.

After trying different colognes I now tend to go for more “spicy” ones that I find more appealing to me. I spray on my right wrist as well on the back & front of the neck. When I’m unsure if the fragrance is still on I sniff my right wrist to smell if it still good. My 2 favorite currently is Dior sauvage & Spicebomb. I would like to try more spicy/ earthy cologne in the future but those 2 are my favorites currently.

I have about 90 odd colognes. I must whittle it down to few signature scents. I recently bought drakkar intense. Very disappointed with its longevity. I want to get down to about 20. Great video as always. Thanks Ash. I would totally agree to follow Ash’s advice and to shave each morning. It makes the Cologne sing and makes you just feel clean and ready for the day.

The last thing I do before I leave the house for my morning walk and trip to share coffee with friends at my local patisserie is to spritz myself with one of my favourite colognes. I've received rave reviews from both women and men for Tom Ford's Tobacco Vanille and Black Orchid, which I have worn throughout the winter months. With the weather turning somewhat warmer, and spring approaching, I will transition to lighter fragrances such as Ford's Grey Vetiver or Dior's Fahrenheit. I wouldn't leave the house without putting on cologne.

Applying a good fragrance is the last piece of the jigsaw for me whilst getting ready. After the cleansing, moisturising, oral hygiene and dressing, the scent is the thing that I choose to be the icing on the (somewhat stale these days 😄) cake. The fragrance I choose will depend on my outfit, the event I'm attending that day, who I'm meeting and the weather / season of the year. As I often joke - I'm cursed with these looks so I at least owe it to the world to make me a better place! Kind regards, Rob

Ash, thanks for the new vid. Have you ever made a video about your 'studio' (i.e. the woodland/field)? Do people ever wander past with their dogs? Or is the secret location included in the Official Secrets Act? PS: Loved the first reason. I'd never considered it before. Edit: My 80s/90s smell equivalent of your Kouros (which I remember) is Amber Lynx (obviously, a deodorant). I'm not sure what happened to it. They might have stopped making it, possibly because it drove the lasses wild.

@FiddlingCPA10 ай бұрын
@brendan5419 Before buying, definitely try to smell it first, or at least pay careful attention to people's description of it, as it's very different from the ones you mentioned. It is a cool- or cold-weather scent. Also, you might want to try some fragrance oil roll-ons from Al Rehab, if you haven't already done so. They are quite potent and super long-lasting (however, they're also linear, which you may or may not like).
@TheChapsGuide10 ай бұрын
It is hard to offer specific recommendations, as everyone’s body chemistry will affect fragrance longevity in a different way, but I find Bleu de Chanel Parfume very long-lasting
@FiddlingCPA10 ай бұрын
@TheChapsGuide Yes, some fragrances that reviewers tend to say are long-lasting don't always last a long time on my skin. One trick I like to use with short-lived scents, or fragrances that have great top notes but don't dry down well, is to apply them to my undershirt (on parts of the undershirt that will be hidden, in case the liquid stains the undershirt).

The reason smelling good is simple : go talk to that bloke in the pub who has not showered in days or washed his hair and clothes and has retched BO .. how fast do you make your excuses and break contact ? He might be highly intelligent, wealthy and successful but OMG just drives you away without a word … Now ask yourself « why should I smell good « ?
