My seventh grade teachers must remember me as one of their most redolent pupils because I’ve been into colognes since I was 12. I’ll rummage through a dresser drawer and still find bottles of Polo and Grey Flannel. Today, it’s been Bulgari, and recent years Dior Sauvage, which invites many compliments. I’ll apply cologne sparingly, particularly in Japan where too much can be considered de trop.

I remember reading a newspaper account many years ago about a guy selling bottles of "eau de toilette" from a suitcase at one of the big railways stations in London. Apparently the contents were (how shall we say?) a more literal interpretation of "toilet water" - i.e. his urine!! I seem to remember the guy ended up getting jailed. But it struck me that, as suitcase scammers go, he at least had a wry sense of humour!

Floris very good. Have a couple of these. If you’re looking for something similar - go to Truefitt & Hill and buy 1805. Truefitt is the oldest barber shop in the UK and has a warrant to the royal family. Just last week I had a haircut and shave there - what a treat ❤

I agree, a man _(or woman)_ should wear _(apply)_ what ever perfum *Eau de toilette* (grooming water (google)) of their own choice and none of the media hype that tries to dictate what we should wear! I have *Blue Stratos* and *Imperial Leather* Cologne and I love them both. OK their not strong and don't last forever. Blue Stratos lasts for about 2 hours and later in the day I can still smell it although weak! I put _Eau de toilette_ through google translate with out the _de_ it came up with _toilet water_

Talking about fragrance longevity, one may consider using an array of same brand in soaps, shampoo, aftershave, hair cream and body lotion. The classic Old Spice is a typical example with these multiple offerings. Rule of thumb: it's advisable to remain consistent with a specific fragrance and not mix-match!

You got me started on Floris 89 EDT for which I must thank you. I very much enjoy that as well as Pre de Provence No. 63 EDT and shaving products. I much prefer the EDTs and agree with the adage that a fragrance should be discovered, not announced. I don't like being that guy whose cologne arrives in the room before he does.

Sauvage Dior is my daily driver. While wearing it I often get compliments from both sides of the aisle as it were. Going light with it in the morning after a shower will still be ever so slightly noticeable in the evening. Congrats on the 20k! Thank you for making my breakfasts a bit more enjoyable!

Which version (concentration) do you wear and get compliments on?
@The_Infidel_of_Fragrance
@The_Infidel_of_Fragrance Жыл бұрын
@@rezar6894 well if he's applying the fragrance in the morning after a shower then it's most likely the EDT. Due to the higher concentration of fragrance oils in the EDP and Parfum concentrations, those two are typically reserved for evenings and date nights. You see EDP and Parfum concentrations do have better performance meaning that they will remain on the skin for many many hours after being applied but the EDT will provide the user a larger scent bubble, hence people will notice you from a greater distance. A big strong scent bubble can be a bit too harsh on a date, depending on the setting of course. For dates you want the fragrance to have more of a personal scent bubble as the fragrance will entice your date to get closer to you in order to enjoy your alluring and intoxicating fragrance.

Good morning Ash and good morning gents. Great breakdown of fragrance strength. I love 4711! Despite its almost non-existent performance it’s such a revitalising scent that makes me feel good. A great fragrance for right after a shower. It lingers around longer than one would expect initially albeit only as a “skin-scent”; otherwise it’s ready to leave the stage to another fragrance without being obtrusive. I think the reason for “unexpectedly” long-lasting aftershaves VS short-lasting EDTs is dependent on the fragrance itself. Things like leather or sandalwood tend to linger around a lot longer even if they’re in lower concentrations; whereas citrus molecules are much more volatile (from what I hear, I’m not an expert) therefore evaporate much quicker even when in higher concentration. You can slightly extend the performance of a “weak” fragrance with “overspray” (which I sometimes do with 4711)

Eucris EDP is very much my favourite fragrance, a bit overpowering for everyday use, but it makes me feel confident when I wear it. I also have the cologne for when the power of EDP isn't needed. Not tried Sauvage but I have been told I would like it - must give it a try some time.

Great overview. I only have one eau de parfum, which is a men's fragrance from Channel and, personally it's too strong for my taste and I only wear it occasionally and wouldn't wear it in the office. Eau de toilette is as strong as I normally go. The other important thing is how the fragrance smells when it's applied on you, as they react differently with each individual, many recommendations may not be right for you. It's useful to visit a department store to apply a tester to yourself and experience how it develops over half an hour or more as the smell changes. I also go with my wife as I value her opinion and she will be smelling it. Dior Sauvage gives off a strong odor of washing up liquid when it's applied to me, it's not pleasant and is distinctly different to how it smells when sprayed on a tester stick, though on you it might smell great and I mean that sincerely.

Thanks for the info, young man. Very useful. I find that layering is a key element for longevity once you find the fragrance that suits you. Soap, moisturiser and then eau de toilette/parfum to finish. I've now found what I like and what suits me and very happy with it. My wife likes it and I get some nice comments, "oooh, you smell lovely". Keep up the good work, that man!

I bought 200ml of Savage parfum (not EDP). I thought it was like something out of the pound shop. This was actually bought online from The Perfume Shop and actually picked up from my local branch of said shop. After a couple of weeks or so of me being very unhappy and disgruntled, I returned to my local branch of The Perfume Shop. The lady manager there was terrific. She exchanged the product without a twinge of argument. I'll give her a 15 out of 10 for that. She exchanged this 200ml bottle of parfum for a 100ml bottle of Elixir. Wow! What a difference. And the lesson is this:- Although EDT, EDP or just plain parfum may be of different strengths or concentrations, they are also frequently of different formulations. The Savage parfum smelt absolutely nothing like the elixir in my opinion. I have certainly learnt the lesson.

I started to wear Amouage last year -- and have received some good feedback on it. The pros are that it's long lasting and they have a wide range of rather unique scents. The cons are that they are a bit expensive -- once you buy one bottle, you'll want to try the others. I am tending to more tobacco scents now!

When I was in school MEM English Leather and various Russian Leathers were in every drug store and high quality men’s shop. In the US one can still buy Elsha Russian Leather on line for cheap. I’ve since found any number of leather scents I recommend. Quorum, of course, and Dunhill For Men. Reputedly David Niven loved it. Yatagan by Caron - a leather, pine and patchouli monster that will make you feel like Clint Eastwood, and Givenchy Gentleman - rather more formal, like what Bogie would wear. For warm weather I go for things with lavender or citrus, like Paco Rabanne or Pino Silvestre. Walk through mists of these - they last longer. Then there’s YSL Jazz. This is a note-for-note reconstruction of Yardley White Label. Perhaps Ash remembers it? A panorama of lavender, wood and ginger that Pierce Brosnan would go for. The original goes for a lot of money, but worth every penny.

Nice explanation and primer for the beginner Gent in fragrances! I personally greatly prefer EDPs in general to EDCs and EDTs for the simple reason of staying power. This very reason also somewhat negates the price difference you notice initially - it's the old cost-by-wear argument constantly (and correctly so) made by Sven Raphael Schneider and his confederates on GG. I usually (and would advise to) start with an EDT concentration to test a scent if there is a EDP concentration available, it's better than just a tester for a longer evaluation. Best regards Raoul G. Kunz

Ash, I'd like to add, the Sauvage elixir is actually a different fragrence from the standard range, some elements are the same but it has a deeper, darker depth to it and its a superb frag and garners loads of complements. Also you can get it a lot cheaper than John Lewis', Notino and all beauty usually have it for around £112 and I do believe in boots it's around £120.

Hi Ash! Nice jacket, it suits you (and the GMT Pepsi) very well. On topic: it's funny how different people have different opinions about fragrances. For example I really like Sauvage, but my wife loathes it. She absolutely doesn't like the fragrance at all. The other way around goes for JPG Le Male. I don't find it particularly nice, but she likes it. Watching your video, I now realize that I wore Sauvage while on a holiday and spending a lot of time in the car. I guess the fragrance was so powerful that she developed an aversion.

I've slowed down with fragrance purchases quite a lot, but got a bottle of English Leather (by Fisher, NOT Dana) and to my nose it is a more masculine Tabac - it just has something in it that packs a more masculine punch than Tabac, and it is a sillage and longevity MONSTER. I'm actually blown away at its scent, performance, and price - it destroys other heavy hitters like Quorum and Kouros! Alas, I digress - I'd very much like to pick up a small bottle of 4711, Pinaud Clubman, and Ted Lapidus Pour Homme - I keep telling myself to get TLPH sinse I absolutely adore the rose notes and I'm incredibly curious to actually smell Clubman! Someone has mentioned that it's a more refined version of Brut Original

I imagine most apply directly after a shower and onto bare skin, but doesn’t doing so give you a nice scent when you need it least and then dissipate by the time you need it most?
