hi minimminions (sorry for calling u that) I went into this vid planning to have all footage running on real hardware, but struggled to get it going with my capture device so I went out and bought an older Avermedia which recorded composite + component but that didn't work either so I caved and resorted back to what I know and love. Emulation. Vagrant + Alien are running on a PS3, the rest are just running in ePSXe using different renderers as I tried to get each as accurate as possible. Tech problems are fun. huge thanks to all of you for watching and supporting me, take it easy :)

I would highly recommend seeking out a Dazzle or EzCap with S-Video support. You can use that with AmaRec TV to get some pretty decent looking capture. Also, software render at 320x240 will always be the most accurate to the original system, though some games may need to be run at 640x480 if they run in interlaced mode. Oh and if you do another one of these, Internal Section should be on it. Sure, it's all flat shaded polygons, but it's one of the very few games on the system to run at 640x480 interlaced at 60 fields per second, which is pretty much impossible in most instances. On a more technical side, the game it self is also only a couple of mega bytes. Most of the disc is taken up by music.

Speedy ...wasn't Bubsy 3D also one of few PS1 games to run at 480i60 (which was possible because it consisted mostly of flat shaded checkerboard patterns), yet had full 3D models for the player and all enemies? I guess that means it would arguably be possible to justifiably include Bubsy 3D in a potential "5 more graphically impressive PS1 games", as funny as that may sound to anyone who's heard of Bubsy 3D.

Bubsy 3D had a horrendous framerate and looked pretty ugly, so I wouldn't count that as impressive in the slightest. IS is impressive because the game runs in that mode, keeps a consistent framerate, looks good, and is visually stunning.

Fun fact: Although Alien Ressurection is one of those games where you need a Dualshock controller to play, it's the VERY FIRST GAME to utilize the modern FPS control method. Y'know, using the analog sticks to move & look. Also, you gotta love this infamous Gamespot quote when they reviewed the game... _"The game's control setup is it's most terrifying element. The left analog stick moves you forward, back, and strafes left & right, while the right analog stick turns you and can be used to look up & down."_

Tekken 3. I played a demo that came with a magazine - after one or two plays I jumped in my car, drove to town like a man possessed, and bought a copy. That's the only time I've ever been so impressed by first impressions of a game. Still looks good.

What's even more nuts about it is that it MIGHT actually be even smaller on disc! I looked up the ISO size for comparison, and it was only 60something megabytes. I'm wondering if the game's manual somehow accounted for that extra 30mb, but I went with the higher number to be safe just in case.

My brother had that, back in the day, to me it was just "not FF7" so I didn't bother with it, a mistake I ought to correct. I always found the original Colony Wars a great looking game, I played Red Sun years later, and thought it was a downgrade. They were trying to do too much with too little. Never played Vengeance, beyond a demo, but I want to find it.

A lot of vagrant story uses the same textures all over the place. Its so well designed that it is hardly noticeable how much they reuse assets. Also the textures for the PSX are tiny. The thing only had 2mb of RAM and 1mb of video ram anyways. A 486 with a voodoo could easily crush it specs wise.

If I recall, Alien Resurrection was the first, or one of the first, games to use dual analog stick controls in an FPS where one stick is for moving and one for aiming - the control style that all future FPS would use to this day.

I use a PS2 to play my PS1 games, and I honestly keep getting confused and looking for a PS2 box to put my Ridge Racer Type 4 disc back into when I’m done. I don’t do this with any of my other PS1 games, it’s just that Ridge Racer Type 4 looks so damn good that it may as well be a PS2 game.

It looks way worse than RR4. Flat lighting, low draw distance and all the texture warping like you see in 99% of PSX games, where RR4 uses some insane trickery to almost completely remove texture warping (notice how smooth the textures are on the road).

Not gonna lie, R4 is much better in the graphics department when pitted against GT2. Heck, even GT1 had better lighting (imo) where GT2's huge car roster had to deal with a compromise: lazier detailed lighting and poor draw distance/optimization. But still, car models are still around 250 polygons and being able to fit into a single disc is pretty amazing, which explains different game modes require a seperate disc.

About Tekken 3: The backgrounds have been slitghtly simplefied for the ps1? The Arcade version backgrounds are 3D modelled (not all elements). The ps1 version backgrounds are completely 2D - just a photowall in circle form surrounding the fighters.

There are some underatted gems in my opinion..games that ARE fun..some of my favorites are: Parasite eve 2:tank controls with rpg elements..what i loved about the game is that EVERYTHING was descripted trough text boxes..replayability level infinity trough different challenging modes. Dino Crisis 2:same tank controls,more action,and really fun..Story was a bit of a mindfuck for me as a kid,but great game. Spiderman 2000:this one is getting more recognition nowadays for some reason..it's memorable for it's soundtrack,for it's replayability,and it was a fun campaign. Legend of legaia:I remember this game was CRAZY hard for me..great combat mode,very original,great soundtrack,i think it had a sequel with ps2.. Suikoden 2:The best of the Series IMO,amazing soundtrack,great story,good combat mode,memorable bosses,replayability to infinity with 100 something unlockable chars.. Legend of Dragon:the FF of SCEE,amazing soundtrack,innovative combat mode,great story,4 cd of awesomeness. Shadow of madness:this game is a strange addiction to the list..this game is mediocre but the atmosphere and dialogue..are crazy good..if you don't care about graphics,this game may surprise you. Silent Bomber:Silent bomber is one of the best action games of the console..gameplay is amazing,graphics are great,music is good,and a VERSUS MODE..simple yet crazy effective. Evil Zone:If you are willing to take on some of the Worst Dialogue ever produced..you may find one of the best simplistic and stilysh fighter of the ps1..Sure now you may think,oh great..another anime figther?please..this came out in 98/99..Story mode made as an anime show,with each figth having a preview/story/epilogue..each char having a BIO page..Soundtrack is amazing..NOTHING at the time could be compared to this game,for stile,gameplay,and chars. Vagrant Story was 90MB because all cutscenes were in-engine. FMV took most of the space on CDs back then. It also had short looped music tracks and highly compressed sound effects. Textures were so low-res on the PS1 that they took very little storage space. the PS1 had only 1MB of video memory.

Alien Resurrection on Ps1 is so underrated in my opinion, I still remember the research mode cheat to change the aliens was so cool for it's time. This game is really tough as well. Speaking of Vagrant Story, I would also include Threads of Fate still looks pretty good to this day especially using the PS2 polygonal smoothing feature.

I was never good at GT2 back in the day, and I really only got the game in 1998 because the visuals got me. I would like a change of pace, with that sweet lighting and those courses.

Blood Omen is also a great game for its time, sprites were gorgeous and the environment and special effects too, can't get enough of that blood flowing out of your enemies bodies and blasting their skin off with an eldritch-level type of horror spell not to mention the voice acting

Spot-on list. When it comes to combination of art direction and technology, these are the best games on the platform visuals-wise. Good thing you didn't put games with pre-rendered backgrounds into this list. When done right, they look mighty impressive (Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, Parasite Eve), but there's something special about full 3D games.

Vagrant Story blew me away back in 2000. It's definitely one of the main PS1 games I'd love to see them remaster at least, if not make the sequel that they set it up for at the end of the game. And also...the year 2000....what an amazing year for games. As was 2001 and 2002.

I'm kind of shocked that no one mentioned either in the video or in the comments Legend Of Dragoon. I know they used pre-rendered backgrounds while walking around, but the in-combat character and enemy models were some of the most impressive on the PS1.

How about the Tenchu games? Those have always been among my favorite from the era and they looked quite good for their time. I was also a huge fan of the Megaman Legends games. That game had something very special, but really don´t know what. It was crashing al the time, had some weird bugs like fall of the screen and stuff all the time, his combat system was not something special, it was two or three different type of combos, and the use of spells and a gun. But the atmosphere and music, plus the main character being the antithesis of the traditional hero (later you find that him is the main character of the first game if I remember well, but at the beginning he was a lunatic with an axe chopping zombies in half) gives something to that game

Vagrant story is an amazingly beautiful game the story is just unbelievable I spent so many hours playing that game over and over again trying to find differnet keys to unlock different doors. I still have my small ps1 and Vagrant story is the only game I have for it and ill play it every now and then when I get bored with my ps4.

While the game in it's entirety wouldn't fit on this list Parasite eve II has some really graphically impressive parts. Almost as if you're controlling one of the FMV sequences in the game. You can tell when you're in one of these parts though as they had to shrink the resolution so it would run fine.

Tarks Gauntlet I remember Parasite Eve 2 having very impressive pre-rendered backgrounds that looked quite high-res, and the 3D models had higher poly counts than other games, but it also ran at about 20fps, so that's the tradeoff. Many PS1 games that were released in 2000 were technically impressive. It was the very end of the PS1's life cycle and developers were able to squeeze every last bit of the hardware.

I loved Vagrant Story, i played it until i became so faking powerful. The only thing I didn't know yet on my own, was how to get the Excalibur. Back then, it was the most "real-time" kind of battle system in RPGs. You could see that the ones behind VS, did really put a lot of dedication in this game. The game had a lot of graphical details in every map. And back in 2000, the whole story was so complex and different, deep. That's why to this date i keep my original copy of that game.

Just as a little addition: Tekken 1 and 2 arcade boards are based entirely on a PS1, and the Tekken 3 arcade board is based on PS1 but improved upon (in special the higher clock rate CPU). It really needed a tad of editing to go into house consoles but that's what they managed.

For me as a playstation and metal gear solid fan, you got the list 100% correct and MGS1 is my favourite metal gear game. I agree with it being the best game out for the ps1 console. This game was very well thought of when times were really good between Hideo Kojima and Konami.

The lighting in Ridge Racer is most likely not lightmapping but vertex shading. Thats how we did it on the psp games I worked on too. Its basically a freebie in terms of resources.

I bet my Trinitron that RIIIIIIDGE RAAACER!!! (Type 4) make it in. The High-Spec demo of the original that Type 4 included was also really cool, the colours are just stunningly vibrant and the 60fps gameplay really helps.

It's definitely in the conversation. It had such an enormous influence on the industry. Every epic adventure game since had tried to be another MGS. Games like Fallout, The Last of Us, Uncharted, and so many more wouldn't exist in the same form today if not for the masterwork that was MGS.

I really loved the artistic style of Breath of Fire 4 on ps1. The mixture of anime like 2d characters and 3d world was gorgeous.. Also I thought Dino Crisis 2 was visually impressive as well.

Hmmm... Dead or Alive. Love or hate the fanservice nature of the game, I always thought the models looks better than even Tekken. Softer and rounder, so they looked more organic, less blocky. Xenogears. My extreme love for the game aside, its combination of sprites and polygon 3D models made it exquisite. Battles were, generally, beautiful, and so was attention paid to the environment in detail. Legend of Dragoon. I do not recall the game well, in all honesty, but I do remember being blown away by my character's Dragoon transformations. Silent Hill. I often feel the first game gets too little love. The fog is genius. By using it to make you feel more claustrophobic and scared, while hiding what would otherwise be abysmally small draw distances, there is more detail in what you can see.... and what you could see worked well to creep you out and scare you. Parasite Eve. Not a great game, but used as a testbed for the graphics engine that Square made for FF8, when people came off the blocky characters of FF7 (which still blew us all away) to the new style character model being shown in Parasite Eve... well, I remember being shocked, at just how detailed the characters were. Just 5 more I think should be considered.

I think the first MGS was visually groundbreaking for its time, but even after few years while it was still on a market, it started to visually fade rather quickly (that could also imply to a bunch of PS1 titles). The level design, I agree, is well put together and the draw distance is impressive, but the face animations and head shaking stick out like a sore thumb with eyes and mouth lacking any textures. Though, the cinematic presentation truly is outstanding for its era. I think Tekken 3 holds up rather well even for its time because of its smooth 60 fps, very detailed polygonal models using the old tech and they even miraculously crammed in lot of extras on a single 750 MB CD, and that pretty impressive. Even on the epsxe emulator the game looks marvelously. Crash and Spyro games also hold up rather well with good cartoon animations and very colorful desing. Vagrant Story, I agree, is graphically impressive even for a PS1 title, and it's also damn impressive that they put all that in on a single CD and they didn't even max it out. I also want to add that not many people acknowledge Ace Combat games on PS1 for the visuals. Air Combat is graphically obsolete, but Ace Combat 2 and 3 look rather impressive with the detailed plane models, appealing HUD and impressively detailed city terrains for games made with a limited technology. And I'd also want to add Omega Boost to the mix. It's a 1999 game and it looks like a marvel that has aged like a fine wine on a visual department. Not to mention that it was made by the same developers responsible for the visually appealing Gran Turismo series.Too bad they only work on GT game for two decades because they'd make a killer PS4 app out of Omega Boost sequel.

Quite a cool list, Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver would definitely be a top 5 for me, there's as much care and attention to detail as Metal Gear Solid and the voice acting and music is so thought out too, under rated gem. The Crash Bandicoot games make the most of pretty much everything the ps1 has too, how colourful it all is and it's so smooth.
