Letting go of guilt was the biggest one for me. The Swedish death cleaning really helped me with that one. I only have one child that would need to deal with all of this when I die and the guilt of burdening her with that was my inspiration. Since us moms usually feel guilt about something, I just exchanged the guilt of "wasted money" for the guilt passing on the burden to my daughter.

Excellent point! We managed a seniors’ apartment complex and saw so many families burdened with a pile of junk when their parents died.

You are fabulous!! I'm probably as old as your parents, and I just didn't know what to do with my parents, (my kids grandparents) pictures, letters, etc. It's the only thing left of them, but it stresses me out to have boxes of things languishing away. So, I decided to box things up and divide it up among my kids who have more room that I do, and this way if they ever feel the need to know more about their family, they can just open the box and have a field day! This way I haven't trashed it and no longer worried I am eliminating my kid's memories. I did pare it down to one box each. Don't be afraid to give others your sentimental stuff! They may be in the season of life to really appreciate it. Of course, be mindful of their personal space as well. Don't junk up their house with decor. They don't like my taste anyway! LOL

When I first started my decluttering 3 years ago, I just started one room at a time and if I hadn’t used it, seen it, or worn it in a year then it was gone . I actually also did that with my seasonal decorations so I only had my favorites. I donated it all for others to love 🥰feels amazing to know where everything is and that everything is being used that is kept .

I use black trash bags, once it’s in the bag, I can no longer see the item. In the past I would pull something back to repair and it never got done ✔️. I once had a basket of ironing that I moved twice and finally gave basket and clothes away without going thru it as I realized to never set aside for repairs or later, decide now🤪

Good ideas! Today I took car load to Salvation Army. I won't take to them again. They did not care that there were breakables in boxes and just tossed the boxes of stuff into a big bin. I also took stuff to two other thrift shops several days ago and they are picky about what they take. Soon I will probably be doing the "set it outside with FREE sign." Feels good getting rid of so much! I love the card idea....that has been a problem for me too.

So very true .We have decluttered so much .We decluttered a lot of knick knacks even my mom gave me some recently I had bought when my kids were younger. I'm a crafter not like a professional yet where I am selling on etsy or some other platform. But I could not get rid of my greeting cards, to me that holds such precious memories exoecially the ones that were hand made .I decided a couple years back I would make my mom a album for her 80th Birthday almost three years ago.I am still working on it hehe .Three for my three kids and now starting one for my grandson who is almost 6 weeks old .I think that's the best way to keep memories .It keeps them neat and organized and the person can open the album anytime and look over the memories. It is a lot of work because I spend and hour or more on each page so it is perfect in my eyes .cleaning is so much easier now with less clutter .I also find crafting is relaxing and especially staying in more all of us with covid it is a good thing to do if one enjoys crafting. There are so many things that can be done with crafting if you want to hold on to precious memories. JUST a thought if any one is interested.

My main tip that I am using now to declutter is that every single time I touch an item, I evaluate its usage or function. Every item I touch I ask myself when was the last time I used it and if it’s worth taking up valuable inventory space. Too often when I reach into a cupboard there’ll be some thing that I hadn’t used in like three years. That goes. It saves stress doing a major clean out. And it keeps me thinking about why I’m decluttering in the first place if I have to evaluate an item every time I touch it.

Yes the boundaries is a great point in helping you to declutter. Dana K White also says this will help eliminate the emotional turmoil that is involved in the decision making process. Because the boundaries have given you the answer you don't have to try and figure out if you should keep or let go of an item. It just helps so much. She has has a video called "container concept".

Love these tips, Candice! I've been using the same mindset with greeting cards (only keeping the ones with a special note) since I heard Erica Lucas say that on her channel a few months ago. Only keeping the ones that have a note written inside has made it so much easier because there's only one decision and it's already been made. Actually, I've even thrown out some cards that had something written inside because I don't need to keep things like a thank you note for a gift. I've also been letting go of graduation, wedding, and birth announcements. I don't need to keep them. One hurdle I still have to lift myself over from time to time is the fantasy of using the cards for crafting. When that idea pops into my head, I remind myself: You've been thinking that way for years and you haven't done it so far so you're probably not going to start doing it now and you're too busy decluttering to spend time on doing crafts with cards right now anyway plus it's counterproductive to keep them because they are part of the clutter problem. After I talk myself over that hump, I put the troublemaker card in the recycle pile and keep going.

Cards!! Likewise...yes keep special ones..recycle the rest. One card I got for my 7th bday (1950s)..has a newer version in current retail..so I bought the newer one for grandaughter..and she loved seeing my older version.. now have kept both.🤗 Guilt..yep..that makes it harder...however👍 I think lots of people decluttering during covid. Rather than sell, I'm giving most to an op shop that supports a charity I support also . They sell more expensive items online. Win/win!!! 👍🤗🇦🇺

I have 6 grown children that are married and have grandchildren. My birthday is right near mother's day so i get a lot of cards. I recently asked my daughter wouldn't it be better if they just got one card and they all sign it since they live close by each other. It would save them money and me the guilt of decluttering them. Cards can be difficult to let go of. I had a tote filled with them and I've started decluttering them. I'm sure they don't want to have to deal with them after I'm gone.

Lol, the person in my life definitely gets offended if I don’t keep every single thing she gives me and my kids and she ASKS about the items to check if we still have them... most of the items are random dollar store or clearances items that she gifts us WEEKLY and expects us to keep them... I’m getting better at just brushing off her guilt trip when I “don’t know” where the items went but I’m a non-confrontational person so this is a high stress weekly obstacle. And yes, I’ve asked her kindly to stop being so many gifts but she refuses. Lol!

I have the same problem. A friend gives me lots of clothes every so often. I hate when she asks what did I do with "the blue top", "the grey cardigan" etc. When I have to tell her I gave sone things away she gets sooo offended. These are second hand things. I'm going to keep everything for a month or rwo before giving them away in future! She neans well.......
