If I am making shop furniture that needs casters, I take apart a Harbor Freight furniture dolly and use the wheels from that. The dollies are usually cheaper than buying casters at the box stores. They don't lock but I have used them on things like lumber racks and they carry a LOT of weight.

Just picked up the dust extractor after a 6 week wait. It is THE difference between a productive, comfortable work area and misery. I have used a shop vac with a cyclone for years and suffered with gobs of dust on everything. I was able to run the miter saw extensively and followed that up with the table saw ripping 3/4" ply. There was NO "dust" in the air. There were, of course, some sawdust chips on the floor, which cleaned up in 2 minutes with the attachments. This is an absolute no Brainer for the money. I didn't even need a dust mask. Best investment for my 12'x20' "Shop".

I use those magnetic trays as paint palettes. They're nice and heavy, which makes them less likely to tip or knock over. Plus, they are easy as hell to clean out no matter if your paint is wet or dried.

Amending my earlier note. I use HF f-clamps, guide clamps, Bremen quick clamps and the lower end parallel clamps. They have worked very well for me in my home use. Thanks for all your testing and insight!

Thanks Matt. I have the dust extractor and agree it’s a fine tool. I use a 1-1/4 inch ID central vac hose instead of the stiff Harbor Freight hose. In addition, I have the hose covered with a fabric sock so I don’t feel any static electricity. Correction to your comment about filter cleaning, the air flow rate drops about 50% for about 2 seconds during the filter cleaning. However, it’s not a big deal and you learn to work with it.

I have had the Hercules dust extractor for 2 months now and I love it. Took two months to come in after I ordered it but got it with a 20% discount coupon. It has worked great, and i noticed that it has now gone up to $349.

Have had the Hercules dust extractor for 4-5 months now and it has worked flawlessly for me. The one thing I would (will) change on it is the hose itself. Will be looking for a more flexible hose to swap it out for.

Look at pool filter hose. It comes in great lengths, air/water tight, swivel ends and half the price.

I’ve had great luck with the short F-Style clamps at HF. As long as you stick to the 12” or the relatively soft steal on the bar doesn’t cause any issues. For anything longer than 12” then the Bessie or Jorgensens are definitely the way to go.

I thought the same thing, but several years ago they changed those clamps and the newer versions are weaker and flex more. The older version was much better.

I just got the 1 gallon version for free and I'm curious as to what I can use with a 1 gallon compressor? When I got it it was so loud. It turned out the housing for the air filter was loose and rattling. I made a rubber washer for it and now it's as quiet as my kitty cat.

Yes, me too. I think the Fortress quiet 2 gal is better than the similar looking Senco quiet mini compressor. And for me, the fundamental need was that my off-grid garage's inverter couldn't power my rigid hot dog compressor but the 2 gallon fortress is not just QUIET but very LOW power draw. It's like a brushless tool in efficiency because it has the best flow at 90psi in it's class. I'm can run a framing nailer off it for DIY speed (some resting) construction with it. Not for builder framing but the 15 ga finish nailer is no sweat.

Being retired and cheap, I bought a couple of the magnet trays to hold screws, then i just took some tuna cans or really anything metal, put magnet on the other side, glue it if you want, I use those almost daily. I can make 5-6 for the price of one. just an idea. Love your vids. Great options.

Great video Matt. I do disagree with you on one point however. You are correct about the larger F style clamps, but the 6 inch clamps are a steal. Whenever they are on sale I pick up at least two. They are critical whenever I build any crosscut sled. I clamp my fences to a nice steel bar I have and they come out completely flat. Give them a try.

I agree. The 6" are good for small things. I even have good luck with the 12" BUT I am careful not to clamp too tight.

Same, the smaller F clamps are champs. I do glue the rubber feet to them though, they are too loose otherwise and tend to fall off.

@@muddslide8829 I agree. I used to feel there was some tool shaming going on with Harbor freight on KZbin. Then I saw a video a few years back on the Make Something channel. He explained that due to HF he was able to get into woodworking by purchasing their tools. He showed he still uses a small sander and their 6" f style clamps. I thought if HF is good enough for him, it will be for me too.

Over 45 years in woodworking, I've owned at least 6-12 parallel clamps of EVERY brand. I absolutely LOVE my Bremen parallel clamps!!! The first time I picked one off the rack and felt the weight and quality, I was hooked. I sold off my other clamps and bought more Bremens.

I have 4 of the 24" parallel clamps and am pleased with them. They hang right next to my Jorgensen clamps until I need to do a glue up. In fact, I have 3 of each brand being used to clamp up 2 different projects right now. I bought my 1st 2 HF parallel clamps after your review video a couple of years ago.

You can pre-pay for the dust extractor and they will call/email when it comes in. I did that the other day with an ETA of March 8. I've done that one other time with a storage cabinet and it came in a little early. The price did go up to $345 (I think) but I was able to use a 20% off coupon for "any single item" and got a free cheapie heat gun with Inside Track card. My miter gauge is also off by a few thousandths of an inch at 90. Agree on the clamps.

I am a DIYer and have a lot of tools that are not top of the line because I don't do enough woodworking to justify the expense. However, I am a photographer, have my master's in photography, taught it my entire life, and sell my work online, so I have never skimped and never been sorry. In fact, when I was a student, I borrowed one of my father's cameras and he was a part time professional. Those cameras produced clear pictures, and with AI I can now enlarge them to 40X60. Could I do that with typical cameras of the day? I doubt it. The point I am making is, you generally get what you pay for and you pay once and and are never sorry. If you buy things where you have to remember to do things, then that introduces possible mistakes or inconsistent quality. In a perfect world, we would all buy the best every time. Sadly, we have to make trade offs and think about what is "good enough".

I was a maintenance mechanic and fabricator and recently retired and I have a Mititoyo digital caliber from when I first got into maintenance 25+ yrs ago and it was over $100 and then I found the PITTSBURGH 6 in. Digital Caliper with SAE and Metric Fractional Readings and found it to be just as accurate as the Mititoyo and it's metric, SAE and fractions. The only thing I did to it was take a finishing stone to the corners and just took off the smallest of burrs and it's been great and have had it for over 10yrs with no problems and it's held it's accuracy.... I did buy a few extra ones for that price and they are still working and It cost about $14 10yrs ago but now and it's $23 but still a good deal.

I've got the same one, I stopped using it for anything critical like reloading ammo because it loses zero so often and randomly. For wood working it's good but if I need repeatable precision it's a no go.

I just made a purchase at Harbor Freight of a 6” x 48” stationary belt sander. I have only used it once, but I am impressed. The assembly could not be easier, great instructions and the machining was perfect. Was totally surprised with a soft-start motor. For the money, I can not find any reason to buy some of the other brands that were nearly three times the price. Yes, I have many of the most popular brands of tools to compare it to and I am impressed.

@@donaldpyles2891 I bought my 6x48 some thirty years ago when I was building pine storage/shipping boxes for hand blown glass ornaments. Used the daylights outta it. It helped finish some 1000 boxes/month for just a bit over three years. I still have and use it today...but it's taken some luv to keep it running. The bearings in the drive roller (lower) have been replaced twice, and the idler roller bearings once. Took the platen to a machine shop to have it ground down flat and true again. Moved the power switch and replaced it with a big magnetic paddle switch. Took off the disc assy altogether as I only use the belt in the vertical position. I still have it mounted on the OEM stand, which is kinda low...but it's the perfect height to sit in a chair and sand for hours. To some, it may seem underpowered, but I just sit back and let the sander do the work. Stuffing the workpiece into the belt hard enough to stall the machine in an effort to complete sooner, only makes you spend more time in reality. Get you one of those gum rubber belt cleaning sticks, as your sanding belts will last 5x longer. The Lacey, WA (#51) store had just opened and I drove the hour to get there and buy that very, very serviceable sander. Best $180 I've yet to spend on sanding/surfacing toolage. (Had to rub that in...sorry)

You are correct on Harbor Freight tape measure (inexpensive Pittsburgh). It is off. I have numerous ones around the house and used them for years. Then took two measures with Pittsburgh tape measure and my Stanley. I got two different marks on the wood. I was confused. Then took out other things to measure with and they all lined up with the Stanley. Pittsburgh tape measures all in a landfill somewhere.

I recently bought into the Bauer 20V line. I have M12 but M18 seems too expensive battery wise and I needed a cordless saw for a job. The Bauer cordless 7 1/4" saw is awesome for it's price. Considering I got it free with their 5 amp battery deal. I got a second 5 amp to get the work done and was in. Actually, the battery will generally last me a day if not a project. 7 1/4"! Cheap blades and full depth bevels. Quiet. a big win. We will see what else I might need, but it seems like a quality cordless system and the batteries are priced fairly.

Agree on the tape measure. I was having various projects not coming out square. The problem was using 2 different measuring tapes. I finally figured out they were not the same measurements. Threw them out.

On the paper towel holders, I have a couple of these around my shop, and with the cycles of cold winters and hot summers in my area, I've found that the adhesive they use to hold the magnets on the holders tends to become brittle and when you go to remove it to put a new roll on the holder, the magnets come off the holders, staying on whatever you've attached the holders to. However, a judicious application of Weldbond on them seems to do the trick and keeps the magnets attached to the holders.

Anything Bauer seems to be good. I picked up the Bauer portaband a while back. I'm a DeWalt guy but the Bauer is awesome and boatloads cheaper. I caught it on sale for $99. I also upgraded from an old Central Machinery 4" benchtop sander to Bauer's version. Way better machine and changing belts is a snap. The old CM version required literally taking half of the thing apart to change the belt. Harbor Freight has definitely stepped up their inventory!

Excellent review as always. Talking about magnetic devices one tool that I use on the daily no matter whether it wood or metal or even roofing/gutters is the magnet roller. Great for screws nails slivers of metal that have been cut off etc...

Great video as always! One other critique I have on the hf dust extractor is the static build up on the hose. I was cutting up a bunch of lumber with the hf extractor hooked up to my makita cordless circular saw, and noticed substantial static buildup. I neglected to address that, and the makita saw actually completely broke during that session. Don't know for sure what happened, but I suspect the static fried something in the saw. Still happy with the hf extractor, but wish the static on the hose was handled better.

Thanks for that. I saw your sander videos and while I am in the Hercules line for battery powered tools, I think you're review is legit and as unbiased as possible. Although not a WW'ing tool, I think the one tool HF haters would love is the Hercules battery powered porta bandsaw. My dad gave me an "old" (early '90's) Milwaukee corded one and I also pulled an old Skil porta bandsaw (it was made back when they made good tools) out of the trash at a previous employer (bad cord, it was cheaper for them to replace it than have one of their electricians to repair it) and the Hercules is equal to either one (aside from not having infinite runtime due to it being battery powered). I keep it at my metal lathe for when I need to finish parting off in my lathe, which is not rigid enough to fully part most pieces.

Some of the best tools I ever bought from Harbor Freight are floor jacks for installing flooring, nice heavy metal construction, about 15 years of use, and still work perfectly. They had discontinued them when I bought them and paid a closeout price of 14.99 ea. They were based on a Powernail design that was over 200 bucks at the time. The gears have wider spacing than the powernail brand, but still do the job.

I like the Hercules fan. It uses the same batteries as the router. It's small but blows pretty good and it's easy to move around my shop wherever I need it. Makes summer time much more enjoyable in my shop. 😉

The FastCap PSSR-16 16 Foot Pro tape measure is my 2nd favorite tape measure. My fave is an old 'promotional' Stanley yellow plastic 12' tape measure because it's so light. I also like my chrome Stanley PowerLock 12' measure. The FastCap PSSR-16 stays on my (makeshift) bench, the other 2 I carry about for small jobs, like hanging pictures & other minor things. The only thing I don't like about my FastCap PSSR-16 is it's a little chunky. But I *love* it's blade!

Their pneumatic narrow crown stapler is pretty good. I put down about 1200 sqft of lauan as underlayment putting a staple about every 4 inches. I would tack a 4x8 sheet in place, then just hold the trigger sweeping back and forth. Never gave me any issue. I oiled it daily over the 3 days I used it and I was using it for about 2 to 4 hours straight. Worked well with the staples they had in stock too. I think I paid $30 or $40 for it. No issues, no complaints.

I like to have multiple RO sanders so I don't have to keep swapping grits. After seeing your review on sanders I went to a local renovation store (Home Hardware here in Canada) and the DeWalt was "on sale" at $145. Their store brand, Benchmark, had all the features of the DeWalt, including variable speed for $66!

I always keep a couple of harbor freight tape measures in my work truck to use in the field around other work crews. When someone wants to borrow a tape, they get that one.

Love the videos. As for the Hercules orbital sander, I own one and it's been a very good unit. I haven't had a bit of trouble with the one I have, but then again, it's from HF. If you don't like it take it back and get a new one.

For smaller and lighter weight applications, the 6 inch F style clamps are a great value and perform as needed. Well worth your money. Definitely agree though, stay away from the larger sizes as they will twist and deform.

I would love to see you review the new Bauer Scroll Saw. The thing looks pretty solid. Thanks for all the great reviews, I picked up my miter saw yesterday. Some scuff marks on the back, but 100% square. The plastic ends are a little loose but that is an easy fix.

Regarding the Bremen Parallel clamps - Some of the tests I have seen, they ( extremely ) over tighten them when testing using many times the proper pressure required. So yes the other parallel clamps hold up better than the Bremen if you are using way, way too much pressure in your glue ups.

Great job sir! You are absolutely correct on the F clamps, they are trash, but they will hold two pieces of paper together . There are two tools that I have from Harbor freight that I was shocked that I like them so much. One is there very large belt sander by Bauer. It’s 4” and a beast for removing material. The other I received for Christmas and it is the. Bauer cordless Brad nailer and the spot light. For the price they both perform phenomenally and the battery life was more than I expected.

Great video again! My local Harbor Freight store is out of the Hercules Dust Extractor so I call all the stores in my state and in two neighboring states and they are out of the dust extractor! I’m bummed!!!

Back when I started working as a carpenter, my employer gave every new employee $100 to go get some hand tools and bags. One new guy went to harbor freight and spent $80 on his gear, including a tape measure. He had to buy a new framing hammer, take measure, and 1" chisel after about 4 months or so. I think it was less, actually. The tape measure quit retracting. I think he bought a Stanley after that and it wasn't that much more expensive. I use a DeWalt and it's a tank, although it's got some twist in it now. Almost a full rotation in the first ten feet. But it's fallen off a ladder two stories up twice and still works fine.

Another magnetic "tool" from HF that I picked up and have next to the paper towel holder - a box thing to hold disposable gloves. I have light, medium, and heavy duty nitrile gloves (also HF), and I put my medium ones (that I use a lot) on that. Couple those things with one of the metal rolling carts and you have a good solution for getting things around while still having access to your gloves, paper towels, etc.

I have some of those f clamps, and yeah they bend. How much force does one need to clamp up cutting boards or small projects. The bar clamps prolly are my favorite. Light weight does what I need them to do. I was lucky to buy the dust extractor before they sold out. Holly crap! I love it! Most folks are on budgets, some of the tools are not bad, but go out and spend 20 dollars more for better tools like sanders or drills, Thanks again for a great video!

A couple of years ago I bought a 12" combination square with a center finder at Harbor Freight. I bought it for the center finder. I figured if I scribed enough lines with it I would hit the center. It turned out that the 90 degree and 45 degree squares were dead on. For nine bucks, I figure I got a 'Pittsburgh' steal.

Miter gauge is nice. My only issue is on a DeWalt jobsite table saw the set screws scratch the plastic track. My solution has been painters tape to close the gap.

I have to agree with the variable measurement. I still use their cheap or free tape measures BUT, I use the same tape measure for all of a project. A friend of mine years ago kept making a part he needed at home. The 1st 3 tries came out wrong. Then he noticed the tape at home measured in 1/10” increments. The tape at work was fractional.

I'll agree on the F clamps. I have 12 and 18 inch ones. They flex way too much. Got them super cheap on sale, and the only use I find for them is clamping jigs and stuff down to the work table where you don't need a ton of clamping force. They aren't good for glue ups. I almost bought pipe clamps at HF, but then found the Bessy ones on amazon for a few dollars more, so I went with those instead.

Real horse mats are extremely hard. I just got 2 rolled mats at HF and they are very comfortable for me and the pooch😂

The Hercules dust extractor onboard outlet is not an issue, the Festool onboard outlets have similar low ratings and work with all of their tools. I have the Hercules extractor and it works just fine with my KEB60 tracksaw.

I am a diesel technician by trade and have a pneumatic die grinder, 90 degree die grinder, full set of impact sockets, neon green upright socket organizer and a host of other tools from Harbor Freight. Proper care and maintenance on the tools and they have been wonderful for over eight years of constant use.

Hard to beat the price on their 10 & 12 gauge extension cords. I have two of their 25’ 10 gauges and a 50’ that seems to be on permanent loan to my neighbor. Their nitrile gloves are also good if your going stain and finish work and they go up to XXL which I need.

Thise hand screw clamps are perfect for fastening cabinet boxes together. You do 12:20 not want to dent or stain white cabinets eith metal c clamps
