These ratings are based on recurring problems these cars may exhibit or difficulty in regular maintenance.

Very aptly put. Any car with air suspension, whether its a lexus GX or LS, a BMW 7 series, a Mercedes S class or an Audi A8.. they will all leak after a period of time. As for the camry 2AZ-FE engine, that one came with factory defect with oil control rings on the piston. The holes for oil return that were drilled in the ring groove are too tiny and eventually cause the rings to bind resulting in oil sipping upwards into the combustion chamber. The Honda ball joint issue is really a plague, yes! But it is completely avoidable. Buy OEM ball joints, ensure to tighten them properly with castle nut with thread locker. Use the cotter pin supplied with the kits and you are good to go. I've never had any of my clients Honda "yawo" as far as I did prior suspension maintenence for them. Good job @234drive

@@kennethnzerue5099 With that budget range, you have a wide variety of choices to pick from. 1. If you have a family of 6 or so, pick a 2014/2015 toyota Highlander 2. If you have a small family of around 4, a 2018 RAV4 would do the magic. Fuel economy comes as a bonus with this choice. 3. If its just you and madam, a lexus rx350 2013/14 will fill the need. 4. If its just you and you like to stand out from the crowd a bit, a toyota 4runner 2014. This is the most rugged option but the thirstiest of them all, so you will spend more on fuelling than all the other options. Notice I didn't call out a Honda or an Acura, that's because these brands are not at par with Toyota/Lexus in the fairly used market. There could be more parameters for gauging car that will suit your need. AutoJando

The oil drop in the Camry only affects the 2.4 i4 engine and it cut across the RAV4, Previa, Scion TC coupe, Highlander i4 variant and the Avensis.

That's true. 2AZ FE engine. Lucky for me. My Solara 2004 2.4l i4 drops to like 85% of the dipstick oil level (just under full) after a few months. I use high mileage Mobil XHP 20W 50

Nissan Pathfinder 2005-2010 faulty radiator mixes water and coolant together (popularly called the strawberry milkshake of death), it is a factory defect. Avoid Nissan Pathfinders of those years, if you must buy them, you should upgrade their radiators to 2011 version.

The Mercedes-Benz CLA suffers from engine failure because the idea of the CLA was to give people a Luxury car that can compete with compact cars like the Corolla or Civic but the turbocharged 4 cylinder engine this car carries is prone to failure when you drive it too hard like you would drive any other Mercedes-Benz coupled with the fact that our bad fuel does not favour the longetivity of this engine

I live in the US where VW is struggling, however I find that old (1990's and early 2000's) Jettas, Passats, and to a lesser extent, Golfs/Polos are quite popular as taxis in Nigeria. Same with the smaller Audis. Given our harsh driving environment, I am intrigued. Are these cars considered durable in Naija, or is their popularity a function of their relatively cheap prices?

The VWs and AUDIs of the late 90 and early 2000s were very well made. Simple 4cyl engines, cheap spares and pretty good interior plastics particularly the AUDIs, I still see some today with working ACs and power windows

Thanks for all of these but there's something confusing each time I hear of Toyota camry having the oil burning defect. I use that with the 2AZ-FE engine and I've never had the issue of burning oil.

Really? I do the servicing twice in a year and the oil dipstick has never gone below the expected level. The only thing I've replaced in it is the cold start switch ever. I feel so surprised too because i have always heard of the oil burn. Like you've said, I seems to be lucky kind of then 😂

Yeah, that is often an issue when the car is made to idle a lot and do short city trips. A very solid maintenance culture can prevent the power steering issue.

Wow, we are sorry about that...a temporary solution to prevent this pre-ignition is over hauling the engine and just cleaning out every cylinder block from carbon build-up and debris of any form.

@234drive i learnt that our fuel here in nigeria also contributes to that engine failure. Mehn the car is just too unreliable and very very expensive to maintain. For every engine replacement, i spent 1.5M. Thats 3M in 6 months. Mercedes really fucked up. Im currently enjoying my 2014 e350 now. V reliable.

It is called vvt-i rattle. This happens on cold start and is generally a tell tale sign that oil changes are not done very frequently or low quality oil is being used. Other reasons can be due to jumping from one oil brand/grade to another

Just remove the air suspension and throw in a toughening spring kit.....case closed..........the honda evil spirit doesn't have that leg 🦵 breaking issue .....🙄🙄🙄🙄

When you throw in a spring kit, you throw the comfort of air suspension away but I guess that is better than always having to tackle the air suspension leak. You are wrong about the Honda Evil Spirit...it could have the ball joint issue but it just takes time before it happens...one thing the Evil Spirit now suffers from is a shaft problem. It was 2016 Honda was completely able to delete the ball joint problem from their line-ups.

Yeah, the bad quality of fuel in Nigeria further encourages pre-ignition in the 4 cylinder engine. This bad fuel is also the cause of a lot of emission related faults in high tech cars today but it can be hard to tell. Cars like the Audi require strictly premium fuel to function but we have no access to that which makes most cars suffer regression in working conditions.
