Here's another one for the list: "Their first album, or first two albums, are the best; the rest suck." Artists are allowed to grow, change, and develop their sound. Some choose not to, some do. Either can be a really good thing! Some bands get better with age. Some bands find their niche sound and put out umpteen albums that sounds exactly the same. If you didn't write the music, don't write off a band just because they grew up.

Becoming a fan of Babymetal really changed my attitude. I used to be a pseudo-elitist. I definitely was someone who viewed time periods (past vs. present) a little too harshly (I used to defer to the past). I also was probably a 95% metal listener and 5% everything else. I was open but I felt I had to fit a certain mold. I would be a closet fan of things, almost afraid, even to myself, to admit I liked/loved it (like, my love of all things Morrissey). Babymetal kind of made me sit back and go: wow, this is really impressive and it is such a mixture of not just metal history but of other cultural ideas of music as well. It made me re-examine my attitude and it made me dig deeper into other band's resumes and try out other genres. I'll always be a metal-heavy listener but I think its always a good idea to be open and DEFINITELY not be ashamed of anything you like.

Something that needs to stop - Heavy Metal Elitism: I find that a lot of heavy metal fans spend just as much time saying what heavy metal is not as they do discussing their favourite metal acts. I fail to see why any particular instrument, lyrical theme, vocal style or image should be excluded from heavy metal because there is a role for artistic diversity within the genre. Frankly, it's at its most interesting when it takes those risks.

The funniest thing is when people say metal is populated by "crap" today like Five Finger Death Punch, Emmure, Asking Alexandria, etc. when those are the very uppermost layer of bands, equivalent today (at least when it comes to how many people in the metal fanbase know of them) of Iron Maiden or Metallica or Motley Crue in the Eighties. In the case of the latter, it's a gross misrepresentation of metalcore that has turned so many away from a subgenre that has as much potential as the next.

The thing about glam, Nu-Metal and hard rock not being considered metal... it's not an issue with a type of imagery or a state of mind, it's about the music itself. Unlike what we find in extreme metal and its successors, the music composed by those bands is not at all based on the songwriting codes found in classic heavy metal (think NWOBHM bands and the like). People who aren't used to this kind of music hear mostly distortion and aggression in both cases, so they don't notice a difference. But if you compare the riffs and song structures found in those respective styles, the differences are huge and easy to spot. But I think what confuses a lot of people over this issue, even within the orthodox metal fandom, is that it is almost always framed primarily as a judgment on quality, when that has nothing to do with the point. As an example, Nine Inch Nails is one of my favourite musical projects ever, and I honestly think Trent's work can be way more creative and even more unsettling than most "immersive" metal bands. Yes, his music is based firmly in rock, and can be very, very dark and abrasive... but that doesn't make it anything close to metal from a categorization standpoint, because that just isn't how it works. On a different note, having open-minded tastes is of course a good thing, but you shouldn't have an open-minded approach to your music choices simply for the sake of having one. You should want to explore music that speaks directly to you and your own sensibilities. In my case, besides "true" metal, I enjoy some conscious rap (as long as the subject matter isn't too ordinary or the music too mellow), some electronic music (mostly on the aggressive side, but sometimes ambient as well), and even "world music" as they call it (meaning traditional folk). I have zero attraction for things like Jazz or pop unless the lyrics stand out in a very positive way for me, like some Weird Al songs do.

I think many metalheads consider me a "poser". I suppose it's a fair assumption. Almost all of my favourite music does fall outside the metal umbrella, and because I do look a bit like a stereotypical trendy-preppy bitch people jump to a conclusion. But then when I talk about my enjoyment of bands such as Summoning, Nagelfar, Windir, Emperor, Lunar Aurora, etc it pulls the rug out of people's expectations and bowls them over. But in my mind it shouldn't. Metalheads, I find, are eager to judge on appearance and their early perception of people, and the negative labels that *they* feel the need to bestow upon *others*. We don't all march to the same drum beat. Not in music, not in Art. Variety is the spice of life, and in my opinion it's absolutely nuts that there are people out there pontificating on metal's superiority who would look down their noses at the works of bands such as King Crimson, Camel and Van Der Graaf Generator. But each to their own.

The metal community is one of the reasons I distanced myself from the genre. It's almost like there's no room for experimentation allowed. Everything has to be face melting at all times, or your music is considered soft or too commercial. I still love metal, and get along with my old metalhead friends, but I don't consider myself a metalhead, because of the huge percent that don't allow their brethren to listen to something that isn't their favorite band.
@hmpz369118 жыл бұрын
While exclusion is part of metal, so is exploration of other genres. In other words, Buddy Guy, Beethoven, Pink Floyd - fine. Korn, Limp Bizkit, Papa Roach - the poseur detector starts beeping. That, for the most part sums up the attitudes of most actual metalheads.

Hey CKN, I was just curious but what is your standing on Megadeth's Rust in Peace now in 2016. I know a few years ago you felt that it was one of, if not the greatest album in all of metal. Do you still feel the same about it? Does it still hold up for you now in 2016 with all of these great new metal albums we've been getting recently?

The way i see it is.. if you eat the same single food over and over you're going to be incredibly unhealthy and unfulfilled in your life. Variety is not only the spice of life, but it is the key to healthy living. Music is NO DIFFERENT. If you really love one style of music then fuck yeah go for it man, but you should NEVER discount all other kinds of music, because more often than not, your favourite bands are influenced by bands you think are shit.
@Player-jx9pd4 жыл бұрын
One thing I can’t stand is when you go onto a Megadeth video and it’s flooded with toxic fanboys talking shit about Metallica. They put more energy hating a band that they dislike, rather than enjoying the music from the band they love. It’s toxic as hell, makes me feel embarrassed to be a Megadeth fan at times. Be happy we got two great bands instead of just one.

Great video. Agree 100%. I've never subscribed to the "my 5 bands that sound the same are more metal than your 5 bands that sound the same" way of thinking. And like you said, anyone who limits themself to one "subgenre"(hate that word) or only older/newer music is missing out on a ton of great music. I like everything from Elvis to Cannibal Corpse to Hank 3 to Mastodon, and recently even BabyMetal(lord help me). I think we owe it to ourselves to try to hear as much good music as possible. It's ok to not like certain bands, but it's stupid to hate someone for liking something that you don't.

To be honest, I love progressive rock, progressive metal, old school rap, chillstep, classical, jazz, old country, punk rock, classic rock, hard rock, broadway, old rhythm and blues, gospel, old folk especially Simon and Garfunkel, grunge, melodic death metal, symphonic metal, avant-garde, blues, opera, old pop (1920s-half of the 2000s, but not Disney Channel), Folk metal/rock, reggae, and maybe more. However, I would rather not listen to modern pop, modern day rap, dubstep, modern country maybe, or commercial music at all. Black metal and death metal musicians are incredibly talented musicians and songwriters, but the problem about black metal and death metal is that most black metal can have satanic themes and a lot of death metal themes can be about graphic violence like Cannibal Corpse and some of them can be about satanism such as Deicide. Unblack metal and melodic death metal would be a better idea because the lyrical themes can be about nature, mythology, literature, sorrow, oceans, christianity, love, poetry, fantasy, and a few more interesting things that don't have to be controversial. List of artists that I love listening to: Mastodon Dark Tranquility Pearl Jam Alice in Chains Van Halen Led Zeppelin Avril Lavigne Justin Timberlake Adele John Mayer Dream Theater Queen In Mourning Omnium Gatherum Insomnium Porcupine Tree Opeth Rush Pink Floyd Deep Purple There's so many musical artists that I love to listen to that I can't make a list out of List of artists that I just personally don't like: Justin Bieber (I'm glad he's gotten better though) Miley Cyrus Ariana Grande (good singer though) Taylor Swift (good person though) Nicki Minaj Nickelback (maybe) Drake One Direction 5 Seconds of Summer Fifth Harmony Lil Wayne Iggy Azalea Fall Out Boy (later). I love their old music though. Meek Mill Wiz Khalifa Demi Lovato Some Katy Perry songs might be decent, but I'd prefer her as a person more.

Hi. I'm a metalhead stuck in the past eras. A majority of the music I listen to came out before the turn of the century. I can name exactly two bands that have formed after 2000 that I listen to. I agree totally with what you are saying about us metalheads enjoying multiple genres. I've seen Maiden, Malmsteen, and Michael Schenker live. I've also seen Styx, Night Ranger, Barry Manilow, Michael W. Smith, as well as enjoying attending Polka festivals. I love Polka music. Slovenian Buttonbox virtuoso Dennis Novato, the Malmsteen of Buttonbox/Polka music, may be in my 6 CD changer after Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. Variety is beautiful😊 Metalheads think of Accept/Scorpions when thinking of Germany. I also think of Buttonbox/Trumpet virtuosos performing in a Polka band. There are so many styles of great music, and I respect all virtuosos. Bruce Dickinson and Halford fans are missing out if they do not enjoy a little Italian opera.

You're spot on dude. The sorts of attitudes you talk about take me back to the schoolyard - you had to pass the 'poser' test before you could talk to others about metal or even have the privilege to swap tapes & listen to other bands you hadn't heard yet. I don't think it's as bad these days - you can check out anything you like thanks to the inter-web - but I think the whole snobbish attitude some have to music in general is complete bullshit. Listen to as much as you can - music is the best!

Well said, and agree with almost all of it. Being a working adult, two new bands a day is a bit of a tall order, especially if, like me, you're probably already closely following more than 20, and not all metal. For those who can count the bands they follow on one hand, though, I think that is a good challenge.

THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO! Everything you've stated is exactly what I think needs to stop with a lot of metalheads. It's really most people, not just metalheads. I get this question a lot, "how can you listen to that?" I ask them what they listen to and to their response I'll ask, "how can you listen to that?" Usually their response is "because it's good" or "I like it," then I'll tell them that that's why I listen to the music that they're inquiring about how can I stand to listen to it. Whether or not they like my answer, that's their problem. I enjoy metal and rock, and will listen to some pop especially 80's and 90's. I can't stand most rap nowadays, it's mostly just garbage (Drake, Lil Wayne). Rage Against The Machine and Body Count are the only groups with rap vocals that I like. I'll never understand why some people listen to some of the shit that I'm constantly being subjected to whether it's from someone's shitty bass system in their car (so shitty that everything is rattling so bad, you can't understand what is even being played) or some shitty artist mumbling some dumb rap on his phone through a bluetooth speaker at top volume, but I won't call them the worst people on earth. I'm guilty of constantly playing my metal on a display wi-fi tablet at work loudly, mind you it's not the loudest, but it's loud enough that I can at least hear some of the instrumental bits, and the worst thing is when a customer will usually turn it off and put something else on (usually rap), in which case I'd like to tell them kindly that I don't go to your house and change whatever you've got going on, please don't do it while I'm working. I know it's a display tablet that's open for everyone, but there's more than one where I'm at. I guess that I could say the point I'm making with that is too many people react negatively towards music that they don't listen to by turning it off, and there's way too many people that react negatively towards that, sometimes even violently. I'm rambling at this point, so I'll stop. Thanks again for this video, keep uploading more stuff.

Ignorance and egotism is all the needs removed from humanity. A central honest understanding would be great, but that only happens when the world goes nuts then realizes it is going nuts. This applies to every aspect of negative shit in humanity. It starts with consideration. Gorguts, Morbid Angel, Suffocation, Nile, Ulcerate, and Gorgoroth get played the most around this metal heads dwelling.

5) I feel the same way about nu metal as you do glam metal; some of it is metal while some leans more on the rock side. I'd say bands like KoRn, Mudvayne, Godsmack, Slipknot, Disturbed (at least their early stuff), and Coal Chamber were on the metal side whereas bands like Limp Bizkit, Papa Roach, Linkin Park, and P.O.D. were on the rock side. 4) God, I hate the whole "poser" thing. Sure, I love bands like SoaD, A7X, and Metallica, but I also love bands like Death, Entombed, Testament, Behemoth, Goatwhore, etc.. I can like both without being a goddamn poser. 3) I think metal has been great in every decade since it was created (maybe besides the 70s since there wasn't much of it). Sure, the 80s had bands like Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, Slayer, etc. putting out great album after great album, and most of the most iconic metal bands/albums/songs came from this decade, but the 90s, 2000s, and 10s have been just as good. The 90s had Pantera, Machine Head, Megadeth, Fear Factory, Death, and a LOT more putting out great release after great release, and nowadays we have both new and old awesome bands putting out amazing albums in literally every sub-genre of metal. If anything, we have the best selection of metal ever nowadays.

All of this I agree with! Sure, I don't listen to metal often (I like crossover the most out of punk and heavy metal) but when I do, I enjoy it, I feel the energy the song gives off it's just a real fun genre of music. No subculture, none at all, new or old should have the attitudes you discuss.

I know one non-metal artist that I think alot of people would enjoy. Try the electronic artist Varien, he incorporates a bunch of heavy metal influence in his music and even has a couple of music theories like why are metalcore/deathcore and dubstep breakdowns so brutal? Good places to start are Valkyrie, The Scarlet Dawn, Lilith, Throne of Ravens, Mirrors, Gunmetal Black, Moonlight and Morphine.
