8:45 A sapper is a military engineer. They originally dug tunnels, or saps, under castle walls.
@corbeau-_-Күн бұрын
sapper comes from french sapeur - undermine. In military terms it has become somewhat of an engineer. Sappe is also a spade - a digger basically. It was also about moving towards the castle without having to worry all that much, in a trench - by digging. It's also why moats become popular. Try sapping that!!

Has there ever been a love as pure and true as that between Victoria Coren and David Mitchell?
@helenbartoszek24313 күн бұрын
Yes, I can think of two. Robert (singer and writer of The Cure ) and his wife Mary. They met in high school, became boyfriend and girlfriend at the age of 14 and married in their early 20's ( 22, I think). Both are in their late 60's now and I would imagine it would not be easy to keep a marriage going when the band does a lot of touring. He only speaks about the music in interviews, never their private life. That's probably one of the reasons their marriage has lasted. The second one I can think of is John Lydon and his wife Nora. John in his younger years was known as Johnny Rotten, singer and one of the writers from the Sex Pistols. He met Nora (who was German) when he was 19 and she was 37 and they married when he was 21 and she was 39. Sadly, Nora died 2 years ago from Alzheimers and he looked after her at home till the end. There are 2 photos of them (different occasions) where he is looking at her adoringly and with total love in his eyes.

American here that needs some clarification. Is "fancy dress" describing something like "fantasy clothing"? To my mind, fancy clothing is black tie or cocktail... not wearing a sheet like a toga or coming to a party dressed like a fireman
@laraf-b11 күн бұрын
yes kind of! 'fancy dress' is sort of like a costume, so not necessarily fantasy

@@mitalichinmulgund8679 @laraf-b thank you! I absolutely love UK panel shows and I'm learning new words all the time. @hebrewmeadow295 as children, fancy dress parties were quite popular, though most of us simply dressed as kings and queens way back then 😅. Or had a gun and were hunters, a big hat you were a cowboy, a bald wig, made you gandhi!

Well the windows in my school were sliding windows and they absolutely opened all the way. But I mean, if the children are trying to jump out the window, maybe there's a problem with the school? Maybe solve that problem instead of just making it more like a prison. That's like your dog shitting on the carpet, so you put super glue on it's arse hole.
