I was the executor of my Mom's estate when she passed away. There were hundreds of dollars worth of traveller's cheques in her desk drawer. The tellers at my bank had to get a manager to figure out what to do with them. "Ya." they said, "we haven't seen these in years!"

My advice before taking a long trip is to eat something you've already eaten many times before without incident, or anything that is piping hot. Avoid trying a new meal, or eating at non-peak hours or eating at a new restaurant....this is not the time to experiment. And absolutely avoid ice.

I used traveler’s check in the 80s. Now I just used the ATM in the airport when I land. Hint-go ahead and buy something to break a $20 or else you may have to give a hefty tip to the hotel porter, the way I did in Rome.

1. Street food: great in principle but (a) you’ll still get sick because there are numerous bugs that locals (or long term expats) have got used to. Always go to busy places and order only well-cooked stuff to minimise the risk. 2. Hotel buffets. Just don’t. Do you really think they’re going to throw out that glazed salmon if there’s only one scoop taken? 3. Always carry toilet paper or tissues. In many cultures these are an optional extra in public toilets. Don’t expect a sit down toilet either. This will be especially important if you ignored my Point #1 :)

I’m 60. So for my early trips in the 80’s I always had to get travelers’ Cheques. Also in order to call home we had to go to some foreign post office and make collect calls, or pour tons of change into foreign pay phones. Somehow I survived to adulthood! I’m so glad it’s so much easier now - but there was something fun in preparing for your trip by getting the travelers’ cheques. It made me feel so international when I was in my late teens and early 20s!

Eating street food can be a bad idea or a good idea depending on where you visit. In places where food safety is not prioritized or enforced you can be asking for trouble. Even though the food is cooked right in front of you, you will never know where the food or the ingredients came from (e.g. gutter oil 🤮). The locals may eat them and not get sick because they've developed a strong stomach or immunity by eating it all the time. That being said, there are places where you would definitely be missing out if you skipped on the street food.

Hi Megan I'm from Australia love your videos and can't wait till you bring them out each week. Back in 1986 I was 12 my parents took my sister and I to England and USA and yes they only had travellers checks but now when I go to Las Vegas I carry manly cash with a card as back up but never had to use it. And I agree with you with places to eat I'll stick to places I know McDonald's ect. As for boarding the plane we always take the back row and know when the plane is about to takeoff, I hear them say arm doors I see a row of 3 I'm gone I leave my mum one row of 3 and I jumped up and took the other( never asked) if they said anything they never did I always say ask for forgiveness. You see other people eyeing it off you have to get in first, is that selfish no I say finders keepers. Thank you Megan for your great videos. 🇦🇺❤

I love this video .. especially the one about food and McDonald's. Hmm, micro advice. if your plane lands and you have to get to the terminal in a bus, generally the bus doors nearest to the plane you exit, will be the ones that open nearest to the terminal building, you can save lots of time queuing behind others that were on the same plane as you, by being one of the first into.the immigration hall/queue. I did try and make a fan video about this. However, I was prepared despite me trying.

The last times I purchased travelers cheques were for my European holidays in 2005 and 2007. Travelers cheques were still available to purchase at my bank, but they were already waning into obscurity. I had no problems exchanging them for local currency at European banks. However, there were a few young bank employees who have never dealt with travelers cheques. In my own personal opinion, they do have the advantage of being safer to use while traveling abroad, instead of carrying around cash. Unfortunately, travelers cheques are now obsolete.

I planned a trip from USA to United Kingdom. My Internet provider says they have free roaming. Which is true. So I thought I would use that. When I got to the UK I discovered that it was 256KBPS! That is so slow as to be almost useless. Only text messaging and email were viable. So I went to Plan B which is to buy a local SIM. Here’s the problem. I only have an eSIM in my iPhone 14 and they only sell physical SIM cards for the pre-pay. I could have signed up for a monthly plan except that I did not have a UK address or credit card. Basically I was screwed. Holafly came to the rescue. I had a little trouble getting it activated but since then it’s been working great. Yes, it’s a little more expensive.

When I moved from Alberta to Ottawa in 1972, I got $400 of travellers cheques (my entire life savings!) It took over 3 days by train, and they wouldn’t cash them, so I had zero food or anyway to get food. One kind person bought me a microwaved burger on the train and a lady gave me an apple. That was all I had. And a nightmare cashing them in Ottawa. Had to go to a bank to have them cashed and in the 70’s, that was no easy feat either. Being 17, the bank wouldn’t even allow me to open a savings account. So agree on your travellers cheques advice!!

Finally someone gets it right. I buy in March for Oct/Nov overseas travel. That has always gotten me the best deals. And yes, it does require planning ahead. I totally agree don't be afraid of street food but use caution and some common sense. If the food is cooked and packaged then sits outside all day until it is sold I would pass on it. But anything that is cooked fresh, or to order, I have no problem with. Also stay with the food stalls/restaurants that have the crowds. That's your first clue the food should be good.

Backpacking in the 1980s meant traveller's cheques or nothing. There were plenty of scams in SE Asia where they were sold on the black market then reported stolen as the bank would replace them if satisfied the claim was genuine. I rarely eat McDonalds at home but will usually stop by for a meal abroad in various countries for a taste of home especially if I’m traveling for an extended period of time. The deep fried pineapple fruit pies in Thailand were delicious especially since you can’t get those deep fried pies back home anymore. Barcelona had one of the nicest McDonalds ever with marble floors and table tops and Gaudi inspired design and artwork. It was like eating in a museum. Also McDonalds has strict corporate standards in terms of what they’re serving you. If you want to eat local foods but are worried about getting an upset stomach, there are pills that help lower the effects of an upset stomach, the popular one in Australia is Travelan. But the better alternative is buy colostrum bovine vitamins as that is the ingredient in Travelan and much cheaper and usually a higher dosage. Just follow vitamin dosage instructions. I got the occasional upset stomach, but would only last a few hours combined with charcoal or gastro tablets. I don't think this will help with a full blown food poisoning incident, but this definitely helped in by 6 weeks of Asia.

Boarding last is actually good advice. It means you don't have to wait in line to board and you minimize the time spent on a cramped plane meaning more time at the lounge. Sure you have to check a bag, but that's also a time saver. It means less time going through security, less time having to find your bag in the overhead bin, less time spent moving slowly because you are lugging a suitcase around the terminal. If they lose the bag, great! It's a shopping spree on the airline's dime. If the bag comes out slow, that can also be good as some airlines will pay you if your bag takes more than 20 minutes to arrive (Alaska comes to mind here). Eating at a food cart is also a recipe for disaster as well. Often the food isn't prepared to the same sanitary requirements as elsewhere in the world. And you point out that the locals don't get sick. But have you considered why? If you are constantly exposed to these pathogens eventually you build up an immunity towards it. This is why I stick to places like McDonald's when I am abroad. There is no wiggle room. They must follow the McDonald's standard for preparing food using the same equipment and processes - otherwise they lose their franchise. Is it the most healthy food? No. Is it the most locally accurate food? No. But it won't make you sick!

I just got back from Zurich, i.e. first international trip in 15-20 years and getting through passport control, immigrations and customs was daunting task returning to the US through Newark. Wasn't sure about process to claim my bag and recheck it, i.e. wasn't sure if I had to go up to the ticket counter to recheck my bag. I didn't they made it convenient. There was a conveyor belt right after baggage claim but an inexperienced international traveler would probably appreciate a video on how to navigate the process. By the way you are beautiful and have a nice calming voice and demeanor.😀

Many years ago when I used to do fly drive holidays to Florida when I lived in England I was advised by the travel agent that when I landed and got through customs and immigration not to rush to the hire car place but to take my time and go for a meal or a snack and then go to the hire car location and by then they might have ran out of the type of vehicle you requested and will have to upgrade you

I don't know what the sim card thing is. T-Mobile has coverage in most of the countries I go to. You get a nice text when you land. "Oh you're in Athens? Here's some free 5G." Do other phone carriers not extend to other countries?

Greetings from sunny Bavaria! E sims are great but not all phones support them, I have a 1 year old decent Samsung A53 but no e sim suport. You want a beer, you can get one in McDonalds in Spain for the same price as a Coke as well as macarons etc.

I've never used travelers checks since most of my purchases are at the PX, on occasion out in town and yes I know paying by card isn't smart since paying in usd may cost more than purchasing in the local currency.

Ha! I'm not the only one! While I don't eat a McDonalds (even at home) I LOVE going into them in other countries and reading the menu. I might buy a bottle of water just so they let me use the bathroom. But my main purpose is the menu. Hot Dogs for breakfast in Japan - yuk! Chiliburger in Salzburg. And I think Burger King in Budapest has some kind of lamb burger with alfalfa sprouts. It's a hoot! Oh and yes, my first European trip I had Travelers Checks as back up. Ah, the "good" ol days . . . not!

Bad advise; buy a carry on legal size bag for your valuable camera gear. That advise becomes bad when you fly on an RJ some of which don’t have enough room in an overhead bin for a wallet! Now your expensive gear is thrown into the cargo hold with all the other suitcases, AND you have to wait to pick it up at the “gate check” before you can join your wife who is sprinting to the gate for your connecting flight to hopefully convince the staff to wait for you and your “gate checked” regulation sized carry on.

Just took a flight, and surprisingly was placed in the middle seat. Noticed that the seat in front of my aisle seat was empty. Assume the person just missed the flight. Took it. No issues. No one cared. And I had a much, much more comfortable trip.

I wouldn't necessarily recommend street food specifically, i think a more precise advise would be to eat wherever there's a high turnover. A cheap place where locals eat will generally use fresh ingredients and sell all of their stuff by the end of the day. They have no incentive to store food, so it doesn't have the time to spoil. A restaurant with a low turnover is much more likely to serve you old food. It's much easier for them to prepare stuff way in advance and store it...and they're unlikely to throw it away unless it spoils to the point of being inedible.

Yes, we used to use traveler's checks, but these days they are not as popular because scammers can fake them. That is why they are not accepted or printed very many places. I just figured out I qualify for early boarding, so from now on, I will be boarding as a disabled person early. I get stressed out standing in line to board because people stand too close to me. It is an autistic thing, and since I am already in sensory overload from the airport in general, TSA searching me because I don't have normal body language and facial expressions and I communicate differently, being able to find my seat early will be a blessing. I always Prebook my seat if it is possible, and I am thinking about starting to purchase two seats to have a buffer between me and other people. It is not cool to have to sit on a plane with some stranger's arm touching mine. I end up sitting in a contorted position trying to avoid physical contact from my neighbors. I prefer to get off the plane last or almost last when everyone else has moved to at least the front of the plane, but there are way too many gentlemen who by the end of the flight have realized I am not normal, and assume I might need help. I appreciate though, cause getting carry-on down can be hard since I tend to overpack. I think they figure this out because we arrive and go through security and then they see me trying to navigate the airport, with no sense of direction and in complete confusion. I am highly intelligent as in Einstein's intelligence, but I have the social skills of a rock and even fewer navigation skills. I am looking into pre-check and getting the autistic card for TSA so they realize that I am not a terrorist just awkward. Yes, TSA is ableist, but also how else do they figure out if someone is hiding something than watching for odd behavior? I also figured out that I can come to the airport a day early and get a tour, but I don't know if it will show me where my gate will be the next day. I have to talk to TSA before my next trip. I am hoping that someday I will be able to do a virtual tour of an airport ahead of arriving or pull up an app that will walk me straight to my gate, and tell me where food is and what kind of food is nearby.
