how do i mute the strings :( when i try it they sound awful im new to playing guitar can someone explain it to me

usually it depends by personal preference but u can literally do a chord like usual then gently let go of it but ur fingers r still touching the strings. muting is abt holding the strings lightly but not tightly, so it causes a bit of buzz. idk this might seem confusing but uh watch a vid if its too complicated.

i'm assuming you're talking specifically about the mutes in smells like teen spirit, take the first chord for example: when you're playing the first F power chords your index finger should be touching every string on the 1st fret but only pressing down on the low E string so that the G, B and high E strings are muted because your index finger lightly touches them but not hard enough to produce a note and then when you're going to do the mutes, literally keep the exact same shape but let go of the pressure on the low E, A and D strings, so basically relax your hand a bit and stop pushing down with your index, ring and pinky fingers (remember, your index was only pushing down on the 1st fret of the low E string and only gently touching the others, now it should let go of the pressure on the low E and gently press on all strings) once you get good at the technique you can go from muting the strings to playing the power chord by just tensening and relaxing your hand
